This winter stereo view is west up Wild Basin overlooking the tangle of willows that is the North St.Vrain River in the southern end of Rocky Mountain National Park shows that deep winter remains in Colorado's high country. It will be June before the snow loses its grip up here. You can see up to the Continental Divide and in July and August verify that on clear day, a snow storm can be here in 15 short minutes. That's my waiver of any responsibility! Mount Copeland is actually east of Colorado's Continental Divide. The Wild Basin Trailhead is 2 miles up the valley from this location beside the road. The trail to Thunder Lake passes Copeland Falls, Calypso Cascades, Ouzel (another name for the Dipper) Falls and finally passes Mount Copeland. Thunder Lake is eight miles beyond the trailhead and resides in the last of the timber. The lake is a grand repository of the Greenback Cutthroat Native Trout that had an all-to-close brush with extinction. A small population was discovered and verified by dna then brought back in an all but secret program of the Colorado DOW, Park and TU. The lake is loaded but all fishing is catch and release. A good day on a fly there and you might have to rename the fly fishing sport to fly catching. North of Thunder Lake, other icy lakes sit in a hanging valley up Lion Lake Trail; this valley must be really seen from above. A trek west to the Divide entails negotiating what is left of a glacier and up to Lake of the Winds which is as well named as Montana's Froze to Death Lake. Then you need to sneak around the lake; careful, the west side is skree. Next scramble up the skree to Boulder-Grand Pass. You might as well sign in on Tanima and check Moomaw Glacier and one of the few views of Isolation Mountain. The route west toward "Grand" Lake (the original name of the Colorado River Basin) is longer and has an even more impressive array of high country fly catching lakes.
I can vouch for the results obtained when you are willing to walk to fishing spots. The relationship between fishing and catching seems to be a sort of inverse square law. The further you walk results in better and better results. I am pretty sure that law was in effect on one outing when I caught 4,5 and maybe 6 dozen trout in 2 1/2 hours and burned out when my single Adams finally hooked an aspen. I quit fishing for the entire day and studied whether John Gierach's stealth or Gary LaFontain's wait is the controlling technique for settling a stream. (Reply if you need the results of my analysis.) If you want to fish rivers choked with willows that look like this, forget that elegant back cast, learn the roll cast or my straight up backcast and every other possible technique that can bump a fly a few feet. Rethink the rod you want to carry into this place. If you walk up here to fish, remember that lightning is nature's best way of teaching that graphite makes an exellent fishing and lightning rod. Take clothing that will save your life in that 15 minute snow. Remember that if you got up trail in two or three hours, only lightning can kill you on the walk back down and persistence over the discomfort will carry you regardless of conditions in that time.
To find this place you will have to make the effort to exit the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway and while you are at it, exit on all the various loops along this road and keep your hiking shoes and camera at the ready. These loops will give you a feel for the original road, much of which followed the original Jamestown, Gresham, Raymond, Allenspark, Wild Basin and Meeker Park wagon road. A stop at the Raymond Store can help you locate the multitude of treks and outings available in the area. The Wild Basin end of Rocky Mountain National Park is often more peaceful than the Estes Park tourist trap to the north.
I shot this with my new stereo camera jig when Phil and I took a shakedown cruise. I chose to use it because the fence and willows provide a tremendous amount of depth and movement in the stereo pair.

Although the sky was threatening as day broke this morning, the water was calm and the birds were, for the most part, more tolerant than usual. Then the rain came down steadily for about 20 minutes and I got to test the weatherproofing claims for my camera and lens. This is the most soaked I have gotten in all the times I have paddled on the bayou, but eventually the sun broke through and dragged a half rainbow into view. Good light and good shooting for another half hour, then the thunder boomers started and it was time to pack it in. Little blue heron on Armand Bayou.

This is a very solid metal model of Thrust SSC which was built so that aerodynamicist Ron Ayres could verify his calculations wtih a physical test. The small silver dots on the surface are pressure sensors which are attached to the cables at the rear.
Using rockets the model was accelerated on a track to 800mph in 0.8secs. The results showed that he had calculated the forces correctly.

These bananas have been hanging for 10 months now (flowers opened August 2017). The pseudostem aka "cane" is just about dead: most of the leaves have turned yellow or brown, since it's been mostly cold here in Northern California from end of October until about May. Hopefully these will fill in and be mature very soon!

ElcomSoft Co. Ltd. has discovered vulnerability in Canon Original Data Security, a verification system to provide image data verification features intended to authenticate image originality. The vulnerability allows extracting the original signing key from a Canon digital camera and using the key to put an authenticity signature to a photo or any digital image, which will be validated as an original and authentic.
The vulnerability discovered by ElcomSoft questions the authenticity of all Canon signed photographic evidence and published photos, and effectively proves the entire Canon Original Data Security system useless.
This photo illustrates facts described above. You can verify it using Canon OSK-E3 (Canon Original Data Security Kit). Please download original file for verification here: www.elcomsoft.com/images/canon/Liberty.jpg
