Distant hills, fields of plenty
Below skies, cloudless and empty
As trees rise up to cast their shade
Over land sculpted by an ancient spade
Coloured green, beautifully vast
Filled with memories of a forgotten past
When under skies cloudless and empty
Below distant hills, were born fields of plenty
Kudos to the birders who figure out who these drifters are and then take the trouble to help other birders find them.
This guy was way off his patch.
"While today’s vagrant might be tomorrow’s model citizen, destined to become a colonizer and perhaps an established resident, as Grinnell (1922) asserted, most vagrants might be viewed as “failed colonization attempts”. Newton (2008: 267–299) summarized quite well the various explanations of the causes of vagrancy put forward over the past century or so. They include: normal dispersal over long distances, population growth or expansion, drift by winds, migration overshoots, deviant directional tendencies (right time but wrong direction), mirror-image migration, and reversed direction migration. While all explanations probably play a role and explain the occurrence of some vagrant individuals, we address the latter three explanations as they likely involve the vast majority of landbirds. The mirror-image misorientation theory, originally developed by DeSante (1973), and described by Diamond (1982), proposed that vagrants are misoriented by confusion of right and left in relating an inherited migration direction to a compass reference direction. Mirror-image misorientation theory accounts for observations made by DeSante (1983a) that in certain situations large-angle misorientations seem more frequent than small or intermediate deviations from the normal migration course (Alerstam, 1990). Misorientation by the wind has long been suggested as a cause of accidentals (Austin, 1971), but Thorup et al. (2012) found differently, as the authors used radio telemetry to track individual migratory flights of several species of songbirds from the Faroe Islands, approximately halfway between Norway and Iceland, far west of their normal migration route. Birds with expected easterly and south-easterly migration direction departed westward out over the Atlantic Ocean, indicating that these birds are actively flying in the “wrong” direction and that their occurrence is not caused by wind drift. However, on Attu Island, in the Aleutian Islands off Alaska, Hameed et al. (2009) found statistical evidence that the occurrence of spring Asian vagrants on this North Pacific island were correlated with storm winds from the west."

The name Namib is of Khoekhoegowab origin and means "vast place".
The Namib is considered the oldest desert in the world and there is evidence that it already existed during the Tertiary Era, 65 million years ago, when the dinosaurs became extinct. UNESCO declared the Namib a World Heritage Site in 2013.

Alberta
Canada
The vast stretch of land between British Columbia and Ontario comprises an area known as the Canadian Prairies, a 2 000 km valley of plains, forest, and farmland. Divided into three provinces — Alberta, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan — the resource-rich region has long served as the country’s breadbasket, and a crucial lynchpin in the national economy.
While the Prairies now have their share of big cities, rural living remains an important component of the region’s identity. At a time when more and more Canadians live exclusively in downtown apartments and make money in 21st century, post-industrial jobs, the Prairies is a place where farming and mining still generate a livelihood for many, and conservative-minded folk live in small, pioneer communities separated by vast fields and open skies.
Oh, these vast, calm, measureless mountain days, days in whose light everything seems equally divine, opening a thousand windows to show us God.

Amidst the vast, icy expanse, a formidable sight unfolds as the mama polar bear rises on her hind legs, a towering sentinel of the frozen realm. In this moment, the wild takes on an almost mythical resonance, echoing the primal instincts etched in the tapestry of nature. The towering stature of the bear signals a dual purpose: a testament to her strength and a strategic vantage point to survey the Arctic landscape for potential threats or prey. This act, both majestic and utilitarian, mirrors the complex dance of maternal instincts woven across species. In the human and animal kingdoms alike, mothers stand as guardians, their primal instincts attuned to protect and nurture. The upright stance of the polar bear resonates with the shared essence of motherhood, where strength and vigilance converge, transcending the boundaries of ice and human experience.
Just back from Iceland, a land that has held fascination for me for years. The highlight of this trip was the amazing Laugavegur trek. 4 days and 55 km of hiking over varied and other worldly terrain in every weather imaginable, including the foggiest and windiest ever, with almost zero visibility for hours on end ... But it's truly majestic and I will go back to Iceland again for sure.
This photo is from the first day on the Laugavegur trek, in the Landmannalaugar region of Iceland. The tiny silhouette in the front is my 7 year old son, who did the whole hike in wonderful spirits, unfazed by the weather or steep slippery slopes! We have so much to learn from children ........ This shot captures the spirit of Iceland in many ways - vast, beautiful, captivating, and immense in scale compared to us humans, we are drawn to this mesmerizing landscape, but it is also mysterious and hidden from us depending on nature's whims ...
Living on the edge - Lines in the sand.
Although I grew up in a working class area of a big city I find myself drawn to photograph the the coast and the junction of land, sea and sky. Mankind has been part of this landscape for thousands of years and we are now as much a part of it as the waves.
The beach at Holkham, North Norfolk, England is vast and even in high summer never looks crowded. It's emptiness gave me the opportunity to shoot along the lines of drying sand created by the ebbing tide. The sea, a single person and wind turbines can be seen in the distance, mankind and our creations are never far away but here nature still dominates.
Near Mopani, there was a Bird Hide - I forgot its name, but will update as soon as I find my map :)
We saw this absolutely mad rush of a vast herd of Buffalo leaving dust clouds behind as they stormed the water's edge for a drink.
First it was a few, then a few more, and then more and more until they lined up, forcing crocodiles back into the water, Hippos disgruntledly grunting their complaints about the disturbance and birds to soar around in joy as they stirred up a whole bunch of previously hidden insects.
For close to an hour, this waterhole provided a lot of entertainment. Buffalo are one of the Big 5, and some people find them either ugly or boring.
Personally, I find them interesting - despite them being a black mass, each one has an individual face, personality, and behavioural patterns around this situation. Some were more skittish than others, some had practically beady eyes, others had more of a curious glint in theirs... No, despite their masses, their grumpy reputation, I do enjoy watching them (safely, from a bird-hide... or the enclosure of a car :) I don't think they'd appreciate a cuddle or a boop ;) )
Ist of the Year!
Northern Wheatear - Oenanthe oenanthe
The northern wheatear or wheatear (Oenanthe oenanthe) is a small passerine bird that was formerly classed as a member of the thrush family Turdidae, but is now more generally considered to be an Old World flycatcher, Muscicapidae. It is the most widespread member of the wheatear genus Oenanthe in Europe and Asia.
The northern wheatear is a migratory insectivorous species breeding in open stony country in Europe and Asia with footholds in northeastern Canada and Greenland as well as in northwestern Canada and Alaska. It nests in rock crevices and rabbit burrows. All birds spend most of their winter in Africa.
The northern wheatear makes one of the longest journeys of any small bird, crossing ocean, ice, and desert. It migrates from Sub-Saharan Africa in spring over a vast area of the Northern Hemisphere that includes northern and central Asia, Europe, Greenland, Alaska, and parts of Canada. In autumn all return to Africa, where their ancestors had wintered. Arguably, some of the birds that breed in north Asia could take a shorter route and winter in south Asia; however, their inherited inclination to migrate takes them back to Africa.
Birds of the large, bright Greenland race, leucorhoa, makes one of the longest transoceanic crossings of any passerine. In spring most migrate along a route (commonly used by waders and waterfowl) from Africa via continental Europe, the British Isles, and Iceland to Greenland. However, autumn sightings from ships suggest that some birds cross the North Atlantic directly from Canada and Greenland to southwest Europe, a distance of up to 2,500 kilometres (1,600 mi). Birds breeding in eastern Canada are thought to fly from Baffin Island and Newfoundland via Greenland, Ireland, and Portugal to the Azores, crossing 3,500 kilometres (2,200 mi) of the North Atlantic) before flying onwards to Africa. Other populations from western Canada and Alaska migrate by flying over much of Eurasia to Africa.
Miniature tracking devices have recently shown that the northern wheatear has one of the longest migratory flights known - 30,000 km (18,640 miles), from sub-Saharan Africa to their Arctic breeding grounds.
Some dappled light in the vastness, leading into the 400 mile long Alaska Range. This proved to be an incredible day with all kinds of dramatic weather. This was just the beginning.

It is images of the sand dunes and the interplay of light and shadow that inspired my trip to Namibia. All of my expectations were met and then exceeded.

A Pronghorn (Antilocapra americana from Colfax County, New Mexico.
While prairie communities continue to decline across much of North America, there are still places in the west where vast remnants of short-grass prairie can be found. A favorite example lies in northeast New Mexico, where the western edge of the southwestern edge of the Great Plains remains relatively intact. That is not to say it is unaltered, as keystone species have been lost and invasive species have encroached. But one can get a brief glimpse of what it may have been like before the modern era.
Here a pronghorn buck forages in this expanse, where large tracts of public land are still fence free and provide these ancient prairie dwellers with room to roam.
The vast monument that has stood since 1979 on the Place du Vieux Marché where she was burned responds to a double recognition: it is both a church to honor Saint Joan of Arc and a civil memorial to commemorate the heroine celebrated by France on the second Sunday of May. In Rouen, the Joan of Arc celebrations take place on the Sunday closest to May 30. Its architect, Louis Arretche, wanted to reconnect with the tradition of many old Norman churches by giving the building the shape of an upturned boat: to do this, he rediscovered the principles of traditional shipbuilding and the wooden structure remains visible above the nave. The exterior, resolutely modern, evokes the sea with a covering of slate or copper scales.
Joshua Tree National Park is a vast protected area in southern California. It's characterized by rugged rock formations and stark desert landscapes. Named for the region’s twisted, bristled Joshua trees, the park straddles the cactus-dotted Colorado Desert and the Mojave Desert

The sunrise at Murchison Falls national park was really stunning. This is without any enhancement or post-production. An orange sunrise or sunset can be due to pollutants in the air and the park grasses in northern Uganda were being burned on a vast scale to encourage new growth, so maybe it was a contributary factor.
The River Bure, the vast reedbeds and that sky, bubbling up from the distant coast, swirling over the wetlands of the Norfolk Broads....
The vast majority of images I do these days are macros, so just taking this photo felt strange in itself. For me, these tweezers are invaluable when I'm picking up and arranging tiny objects like the stiletto shoes in this image. The shoes are as light as a feather and only ½" long. I frequently knock them over! I find these cheap plastic tweezers are much easier to use, and far more accurate, than metal ones and I wouldn't be without them now. The background is a modern dolls house carpet.

A panoramic view across Zion National Park in Utah, where red sandstone cliffs rise against a clear desert sky. A lone pine tree and clusters of prickly pear cactus mark the foreground, leading the eye into the valley below and toward the rugged ridges beyond. Captured along the valley floor, this wide composition frames the contrasts of Zion’s landscape: desert plants, sheer cliffs, and the vast openness of the American Southwest.

Amidst the vast, rolling plains of the Midwest, a weathered and forgotten farmhouse stands as a relic of a bygone era. Its desolation is a haunting testament to the passage of time, where the once vibrant colors of its paint have now succumbed to the relentless assault of nature. The cracked and peeling facade, reminiscent of a psychedelic mural gone awry, tells tales of forgotten dreams and lost aspirations.
The structure, leaning precariously as if weary from bearing witness to years of changing seasons and unforgiving weather, casts eerie shadows that dance in the fading light of dusk. The porch, once a welcoming threshold, now hangs onto its last vestiges of existence, a skeletal reminder of the life that once thrived within these weathered walls.
A sense of abandonment pervades the air, as if the spirits of the past occupants linger, whispering echoes of laughter and the toil of hard work. The overgrown vegetation, reclaiming the land it once yielded to human hands, adds to the surreal aura of neglect and isolation.
In this frozen moment captured by the lens, one can almost hear the distant echoes of Hunter S. Thompson's voice, a raspy whisper on the winds of time, speaking of forgotten dreams, lost hope, and the relentless march of progress that left this once bustling abode to fade into the annals of history.
I've never been to Mavora Lakes during a peak season, so it has always been empty. Knowing you have the entire area to yourselves is exhilarating.
