Seen in Banstead, Surrey.
Quite a late ZB, registered only two weeks before the launch of the replacement "Farina" model.
Oddly, the two-tone "Varitone" versions came with a larger rear window than cars painted in a single colour.

Similar to the earlier ZA Magnette but with a more powerful engine and a higher axle ratio, The Varitone version had two tone paint and a wrap around rear window. Some had the optional two pedal Manumatic transmission

The controls on my guitar are probably my best design yet. The front toggle (top right of the picture) is a six-way pickup selector that works great with the three pickups. The pickups are three noiseless Lindy Fralin P92 pickups. The neck and middle are soft and the bridge is hot wound and twangy. The controls then have 1 volume for each pickups, with the middle counter set so that I can turn one pickup down all the way but the others keep their volume. Finally that rear switch (next to the closest knob) selects one of 5 capacitors like a varitone circuit, but it's ran through the knob near it so it acts like a classic tone control for the whole guitar. The way you use it is you set the knob at the average tone you want, then flipping the 6 way picks darker or brighter capacitors at that tone. Then there's one setting that is totally open with no tone cap at all.

The MG Magnette ZA was introduced at the 1953 Motor Show, the first MG to have a unitary construction body and to carry the new B-series engine.
The ZA version was replaced in 1956 by the ZB with a more powerful engine and cosmetic retouches. The later car was also available as the 'Varitone' with a panoramic rear window and two-tone paint.
The Magnette was always very popular and by the time it went out of production in late 1958, 36,000 had been made. This particular car has completed only 8,500 miles from new and is thought to be the best extant example of this model in its original condition.

Wahkeena Falls in the Columbia River Gorge is a 242 foot cascade that ends at Fairy falls. This is the bottom of the cascade where you can just make out the main part of the falls in the distance.
Wahkeena means “most beautiful” in the Yakima Indian language. I hope this small shot of its stream shows why.
I found that DxO really improved this shot, but adding a little varitone filter managed to cause the colors to “pop” more. The only issue was I had to really protect the highlights in the water on this one.
I’m experimenting with the 16x9 cropping. I hope this managed to look a little okay. A slight bit of rotation allowed me to crop out the trail on the left and still preserve one of the two trees in frame.

The back is stamped: Varitone Print August 1934, but I believe it was taken much earlier. It looks Victorian to me. Am I wrong? The tree topper is a butterfly.
So this turned out pretty cool. It's kind of like a Rangemaster with a Varitone. The red knob is a four-position rotary switch. It chooses between 4n7, 10n, 22n and 47n input capacitors. The original Rangemasters used 5n, but that's not a common value these days, so most people use 4n7 because it's close enough (for rock 'n roll, yo!). The 10n is much nicer, IMO. Still kind of thin and mean, but with more mean. The 4n7 is a little anemic when you hear it A/B'd with the 10n. The 22n is probably the perfect, "Iommi" cap. It's not quite full-range, but has much more complex mids. Then the 47n is pretty much full-range and a little tubby for my tastes.
Very cool. I was thinking this prototype would give me a good idea where to change the choices of capacitors, but I think these four may be just about perfect. Which is odd, because I usually have to do it wrong 37 times before I get what I'm hoping to get. Heh...

The original ES-345 debuted in 1959 in response to demand for an upgrade on the revolutionary new semi-hollowbody design of the ES-335, with Varitone electronics and double-parallelogram inlay.
The wiring: 3x On off slide switches, Master vol + neck series/parallel,
master treble+middle series/parallel, master bass control+bridge
series/parallel, 6 way varitone (with choke), middle pickup phase switch
and a momentary kill button on the lower horn.........!

Alright, my #7 is finished. It traveled a kind of circuitous route getting there, but I'm satisfied now. Mostly. The neck pickup is still a little hotter than the bridge pickup, but the Orlando guitar show starts Friday and I've got more work to do before I get out the door.
The pickups are Artec AlniCo 12-polepiece humbuckers. The DC resistance of the bridge pickup measured out at 17.19K. The neck was 8.3K. I put an Artec Varitone (QTP module) in it and an EHC milspec machined aluminum black anodized knob.
1500cc BMC B series engine, these were known as Varitones because of the two tone colour schemes.Look at that Bean 14

I had a bizarre task set for me this week for my journalism degree. It was called psychogeography. I had to find a feature in a very small box placed on a map of London. Mine was just around Cambridge Heath station. I saw this little alley en route and wandered what was going on...
