Cozia was painted between 1390 and 1391. Some of the original frescoes (1390) are still well preserved.

Cozia Monastery, erected close to Căciulata, Romania by Mircea the Elder in 1388 and housing his tomb, is one of the most valuable monuments of national medieval art and architecture in Romania.

Today's photo fits more into the category of "gimmick" than "artistically valuable".

Here you can see the main thoroughfare through the Khao Yai National Park in Thailand. As you can see, this is a fairly hilly area (and extremely windy in places - with very tight corners) so you usually travel very slowly. I came up with the idea for this photo when I saw this sight in the rearview mirror. So of course I had to stop and put this idea into action.

A little bit of information on the side: Since the national park is quite large, it would be very tedious and time-consuming for the locals to always drive around it. However, since you have to pay entry to the park (approx. 5 €), the locals could not afford to go through in the long run. That's why Thais have an 80% reduced entrance fee.

Nevertheless, fortunately there is very little through traffic here (at least on the two days I was here). Which of course suits nature very well. However, I had to re-shoot a few times to take this photo because a car drove by. After all, my plan included not having any of them in the photo and, more importantly, not getting run over.

Was der Natur natürlich sehr entgegen kommt.

This is getting so common here in my hood ... one of the seven bungalow communities in the City of Orlando. They demolish old bungalow homes and then build huge houses onto the same lot. This is not one of our hundred year old bungalows, probably built in the 1950s, but still ... the land itself being more valuable than restoring and preserving old homes.

Anyway, Happy Window Wednesdays from this not so happy house!

„The Bishop’s Gate” and „ The New Gate” are the names under which the 4th gate of the Alba Iulia Citadel was known in the past. The monument has the shape of a vaulted corridor that pierces the wall between two of the citadel’s bastions: the Trinitarians and Saint Michael, and it is placed on the western end of the main road that crosses the citadel. It is the only richly decorated gate from the three on the western side of the fortification.

The opening of the gate is limited by two statues technically named „atlants”, representing two mature bearded men, wrapped in cloaks that partially cover their nakedness. The median quoin of the gate’s arch presents a mask symbolizing Wrath. The triangular spaces with a curved long side, placed above the access way, are decorated with masks, quivers, shields, swords, spears, halberds, musical instruments.

A flag displays the monogram of the Vienna emperor under whose rule the citadel was built, Charles 6th, that is to say two opposite „C” letters, the initials of „ Carolus Caesar” and the Roman number „VI”. On the left part by the gate opening, above a helmet, a fantastic animal can be seen, some sort of a gryphon, with the body of a lion, snake tail and eagle wings. In the central part of the monument we can see the symbol of Austria – the double-headed eagle. The raptor bird has imperial crowns on its heads. In the past, the Gate had a practical role: it ensured the exit of the soldier towards the training field. The gate, a valuable monument of baroque art in Transylvania, was given back to the touristic circuit in 2007.

Cathedral Basilica of Assumption Blessed Virgin Mary is the oldest Catholic church and the most valuable monument in Płock. Built in the years 1130 - 1144 from carefully prepared granite blocks, characteristic of Romanesque buildings. It was a three-nave basilica with a transept, probably with two choirs, and a presbytery ended with an apse. The Płock cathedral had a bronze cast in Magdeburg in the years 1152–1156, double-leaf doors. In unexplained circumstances, they found themselves in Veliky Novgorod in Russia and there they decorate the cathedral of St. Sophia.

The fate of the cathedral is related to the turbulent history of Poland, it was destroyed and rebuilt many times. The present appearance comes from the years 1900-1916, when renovation and polychromes were made. In July 1910, Pope Pius X awarded the cathedral the title of minor basilica.

Do katedry płockiej były odlane z brązu w Magdeburgu w latach 1152–1156 dwuskrzydłowe drzwi. W niewyjaśnionych okolicznościach znalazły się one w Nowogrodzie Wielkim w Rosji i tam zdobią sobór św. Zofii.

Obecny wygląd pochodzi z lat 1900 -1916, kiedy wykonano remont i polichromie. W lipcu 1910 papież Pius X obdarzył katedrę tytułem bazyliki mniejszej.

Anayet and Arafita were the most honest and poor Pyrenean gods of the place, since they had been stripped of all the valuable and beautiful things: the pine forests, the paths ... They were poor but happy, since they had a beautiful and intelligent daughter who was called Culibilla.

Her beauty was such that Culibilla was wanted by all the Pyrenean Gods, but she was not interested in any of them and she rejected them all. She liked to play with some white ants who worked tirelessly in the Valley. The quantity of ants was so numerous that Culibillas baptized this place as El Formigal.

But one day the great god Balaitous, the most powerful of all, noticed her. Balaitous was very feared, when he was furious he caused storms that lashed the mountains. Culibilla was also not interested in this feared and evil god, and she ignored his offer. But Balaitous, who had never been rejected, flew into a rage and decided to go find Culibilla. When he came to kidnap her and take her away forever, Culibilla yelled "to me all the ants!" And millions of white ants came to her aid and covered her completely to protect her. Balaitous fled in horror and never came near Culibilla again.

As a thank you to the ants, Culibilla stuck a dagger into her chest to keep all the ants that helped her inside her heart. Now, the Peña Foratata is her chest and the inhabitants of the place say that when they walk through the Valley and approach the Peña, they hear the heartbeat of Culibillas. They say that since then no more white ants have been seen in the Valley.

Last week, during my daughter’s spring break, we took time off work and made a long-overdue trip to the Oregon coast. One of my main goals for this trip was to finally spend some time at a location I often drive past: the southern coast near the town of Brookings. For our first day, we drove to Bandon Beach and tried our luck at another photogenic beach that had often eluded me. This time, we also had clear skies, with no rain or fog. Due to the cold weather, there were few visitors at the beach. I had a fantastic session that evening at Bandon while walking back to the parking lot. I saw two photographers capturing images at the beach. I thought it was an excellent opportunity to convey a sense of scale to the scene. I quickly set up my tripod and camera, capturing a superb panorama with minimal movement. I loved how this image turned out.

Ultra valuable and Ultra rare 1936 Mercedes-Benz 540K Special Cabriolet at speed on Highway 1 South of Monterey.

Introduced at the 1936 Paris Motor Show, the Friedrich Geiger designed car was a development of the 500K, itself a development of the SSK.

Built for their wealthiest and most demanding clients, the Mercedes-Benz 540K Special Roadster was the Mercedes-Benz flagship in the prewar years. Introduced in 1936, just twenty-six 540K Special Roadsters were built, and of these, only a few were exported to the United States.

This Mercedes-Benz 540K Cabriolet, bodied by Berlin coachbuilder Erdmann & Rossi, was ordered by Barbara Hutton, the wealthy Woolworth heiress and socialite, as a gift for her future husband, Count Kurt von Haugwitz-Hardenberg-Reventlow. She asked for several unusual features, including a passenger compartment to seat four adults and custom-built wheel covers. The most unusual, and seemingly capricious, request was to fit purely decorative exhaust pipes on the left side of the car so it would look symmetrical. This unique Mercedes-Benz later appeared in the 1941 Hal Roach movie Topper Returns. It has been with the Keller Collection since the late 1980s.

Introduced at the 1936 Paris Motor Show, the Friedrich Geiger designed car was a development of the 500K, itself a development of the SSK. The straight-8 cylinder engine of the 500K was enlarged in displacement to 5,401 cubic centimetres (329.6 cu in). It was fed by twin pressurized updraft carburetors, developing 115 hp. In addition, there was an attached Roots supercharger, which could either be engaged manually for short periods, or automatically when the accelerator was pushed fully to the floor. The 540K had the same chassis layout at the 500K, but it was significantly lightened by replacing the girder-like frame of the 500K with oval-section tubes - an influence of the Silver Arrows racing campaign.

A 540K Special Roadster sold in 2016 for 9.9 Million $$, so you will have to save a lot of pennies.

Rose leaf water 'pearl'

16-September-2024

Fishing like this is relaxing, without swimmers, in inviting waters rich in valuable fish, although the average size of the catch is rather small compared to the river, especially about fishing from the shore.

Along the Mediterranean sea coasts there are many more species of fish than in rivers (about 50 in this area, while in the river we rarely reach 8-10 species in the same stretch) and many are small in size, but this is compensated by the quality of the meat which is high for many of these species, as for all "white fish" (Sea Bream, Sea Bass and Dentex in the lead) even in species that remain small in size (White Bream, Saddled Bream, White Sea Bream, Black Bream...).

Large fish are mainly concentrated in port areas and at the mouths of rivers (brackish water), while along coasts like these they are only passing through.

Kinloss Abbey is a Cistercian abbey at Kinloss in the county of Moray, Scotland.

The abbey was founded in 1150 by King David I and was first colonised by monks from Melrose Abbey. It received its Papal Bull from Pope Alexander III in 1174, and later came under the protection of the Bishop of Moray in 1187. The abbey went on to become one of the largest and wealthiest religious houses in Scotland, receiving the valuable salmon fishing rights on the River Findhorn from Robert the Bruce in 1312, subsequently renewed by James I and James IV.

During its history the abbey has received many royal visitors, including Edward I in 1303, Edward III in 1336 and Mary, Queen of Scots, in 1562. The most renowned of the 24 abbots the monastery had was Robert Reid.

Reid introduced organised education, erecting a new library and other buildings at the abbey. He became Bishop of Orkney in 1541 and, following his death, became the founder and benefactor of Edinburgh University with funds from his estate.

Few of the monastic buildings remain standing today. The remains of the abbey are now situated within a graveyard owned by the local authority, and are therefore accessible at all times. They are designated a scheduled ancient monument.

Arnota Monastery is located in Costeşti commune, Vâlcea County, Oltenia, and it is one of Romania’s most valuable monuments, famous for its architectural style, sculptures and paintings. Initially a monastery for monks, today it is (since 1999) a convent for nuns. It is consecrated to Saint Archangels Michael and Gabriel and its dedication day is 8 November.

The monastery was erected by ruling prince Matei Basarab (1632-1654), between 1634-1636. Under the church of the monastery were found the traces of an older church. It is said that the ruler Matei Basarab decided to build this monastery on the site of the household where he found shelter in a difficult time, when he was chased by the Turks.

The monastery was renovated by ruling prince Constantin Brâncoveanu (1689-1714) between 1705 and 1706. He also added a porch with a belfry, and replaced the iconostasis and the front door carved in chestnut wood. He ordered the painting to be restored, with special precautions not to damage the previous layers.

▶ "Trifolium pratense — commonly known as red clover— is a herbaceous species of flowering plant in the bean family Fabaceae. It is native to Europe, Western Asia, and northwest Africa, but has been naturalized in many other regions, such as North and South America.

Trifolium pratense grows 8 to 31 inches tall (20–80 cm). The flowers are dark pink with a paler base, 0.5 to 0.6 inches long (12–15 mm), produced in a dense inflorescence [cluster of flowers arranged on a stem], attractive to bumblebees.

Tolerant to drought, Trifolium pratense is widely grown as a fodder crop, valued for its nitrogen fixation, which increases soil fertility and promotes protein rich growth, and enables it to support a wide range of wildlife including deer, turkeys, and rabbits. Its flowers and leaves are edible."

Sphalerite (ZnS) is the world's primary ore of zinc, a zinc sulfide mineral known for its wide color range (yellow, brown, black, red) due to iron impurities, resinous to adamantine luster, perfect cleavage, and pale yellow to brown streak. Named from the Greek for "treacherous" because it's easily mistaken for galena, it's also a source of other valuable elements like cadmium and indium, and while soft (3.5-4 hardness), its high dispersion makes it a popular collector's gem.

Basilica of St.Nicholas Wonderworker in Bari is a Romanesque building considered a symbol of the city and one of the most valuable monuments of Romanesque architecture in Italy.

The beginning of the construction of this temple is connected with the bringing of the relics of Saint Nicholas to Bari from Myra in 1087 after the city was conquered by the Muslims. They were temporarily stored in the local Benedictine monastery. The area where the Byzantine governor's palace once stood was chosen as the location of the future temple. Construction probably ended in 1103.

The Polish queen Bona Sforza d'Aragona, wife of King Sigismund I, is buried in the basilica.

-
