The traditional Swedish spring fire celebration of Valborg, 30 april

I visited the Walpurgis Night celebrations at Ribby in Västerhaninge this evening. A thousand people (give or take), gathered to welcome Spring.

Det blev till sist fyr på majbrasan. Sedan var programmet slut och folk började troppa hemåt. Eritreanska föreningen blev dock kvar på plats för att ta hand om det viktiga eftersläckningsarbetet

This is deep tradition in Sweden 30th of april there are bonfires and singing all around the country to celbrate the spring. Valborgsmässoafton.

Shot during Walpurgis, in Uppsala, when almost any behaviour is accepted...

This is my mothers mother, Valborg Jónsdóttir. She passed away yesterday afternoon, peacefully, at a local hospital.

A very sweet character, raised 6 kids and by herself for a big part since my grandfather, who I am named after, passed away when my mother, who was a middle child, was only 14. I am told she never once complained and she was always very nice to me and I´ll always remember her as a very upbeat person, as you can see.

May you rest in peace. She will live on through her children, her childrens children and her childrens childrens children, who are always growing in number :)
