This fire-engine-red fire hydrant (with a green nut on top) stands out among the drab winter trees and utility lines that line the Interurban bike trail. I noticed it while walking out of town but kept walking. Coming back, I had to stop and grab this image.
We take the benefits of living in a urban location for granted. Here, there's a bike trail, power, telephone and cable lines as well as a well cared for street to the left. Underground, there's storm and waste sewers. Without these we'd be far worse off in our lifestyle.
A reminder that there's much to be thankful for.
An odd looking bicycle, but it rides well considering its weight. Note the shaft drive connected to a 3 speed hub gear. This bike was designed for low maintenance and all weather use hence the hub brakes and hub generator powered LED lighting.

April Challenge Day 9 - Rollei A110
This year I'm using a different film format each month, starting with the smallest and working my way up through the sizes. The format for April is 110, the “Pocket Instamatic” cartridge introduced by Kodak in 1972 and still available today. I've got a lot of 110 cameras, so I've set myself the challenge of using a different one each day of the month. The plan is to shoot 2 or 3 photos with a camera, and then transfer the film to the next one for the next day, using 30 different cameras altogether.
Lomography Orca BW 100 film, developed in Rodinal 1:50 for 9 minutes at 20 degrees.

Scratch-built model from around 2004. I'm cleaning out some boxes I haven't looked through in years, and sharing some of my treasures. The roof is made from a soup can, the building is framed and trimmed with real wood, the hinges are hand made and work really well.

Nashville electric and telecom utilities are all on poles - through out the city. Its not pretty but good to draw.
Justen just finished converting has utility trailer into a camper by outfitting it was DIY No Weld Rack Towers and a roof top tent. Heading out on his first camping adventure tomorrow.

i've decided to leave my drawing project.
it's hard to draw something everyday. to much pressure for me and my working hours. i'll still draw when i feel like it. but no more pressure to do it.
Although Arizona is a land of great natural beauty, the &*%$ing utlity companies have their lines running everywhere. Even the most majestic spots in the state are marred by visual pollution. There are even multi-million-dollar homes on Camelback Mountain with electric lines coming in on ugly creosote poles. Here, a beautiful vista along the road to Prescott is bisected by wires and posts.
I wish the utilities would start burying the lines. What we see each day has a profound influence on our sense of health and happiness, so we should strive to surround ourselves with beauty and we should seize every opportunity to minimize the visual clutter around us.

The Arkel panniers I've bought came with a scrap of fabric to show have tough the material is. What matters for this use is that the fabric seems to have some waterproofing applied to it.
By using it to cover a padlock it slows rust, but it also keeps water out of the locking mechanism, where it can freeze and prevent the lock from unlocking.
On particular days without the cover I stood there holding a lighter to the padlock!
Protecting padlocks this way is too easy not to do. Another material like vinyl would also work well.

Infrastructure and Utilities Repair along Interstate 5 Delta Fire (17SEP18)
As the containment on the Delta Fire nears completion, the long and arduous business of repairing and securing infrastructure begins.
Along the I-5 Interstate an early priority for CALTRANS is to mitigate the hazard of burned trees falling across the road. A section of at least 50yrds will be cleared along each side of the road to prevent this.
Further back into the right of way power and telecommunications lanes will be repaired and reinstalled.
Along the AT&T line near Pollard Flats, contractors from the Kenny Doealker Backhoe Service worked to clear trees and damaged poles from the right of way. (pictured are Matt Justice on saw and helper Gavin Kosenko)

Engineers and body builders use and share 3D CAD models that show crossmember locations, PTO locations and clearances, special frame drilling patterns, and other air, electrical, and emissions equipment on the frame. A generation ago this process involved drawings and body-builder manuals being sent across the country, with fingers crossed that there were no mistakes or missed connections to delay the process.
Here is a nice example of converting a Lowes 3.5' x 5' Utility Trailer into a Gear Hauling Camping Trailer. Using our No Weld Trailer Rack System you could easily duplicate the two-tier rack storage approach he did.
