Bodie State Historic Park is a genuine California gold-mining ghost town. Visitors can walk down the deserted streets of a town that once had a population of nearly 10,000 people. The town is named for Waterman S. Body (William Bodey), who had discovered small amounts of gold in hills north of Mono Lake. In 1875, a mine cave-in revealed pay dirt, which led to purchase of the mine by the Standard Company in 1877. People flocked to Bodie and transformed it from a town of a few dozen to a boomtown.

Only a small part of the town survives, preserved in a state of "arrested decay." Interiors remain as they were left and stocked with goods. Designated as a National Historic Site and a State Historic Park in 1962, the remains of Bodie are being preserved in a state of "arrested decay". Today this once thriving mining camp is visited by tourists, howling winds and an occasional ghost.

This Gothic Revival house was built in 1852 for Christopher Raymond Perry Rogers and his wife Jane Slidell. Rogers, the nephew of three naval commodores including Oliver Hazard Perry, launched a successful naval career of his own. Admiral Rogers served in the Mexican Wars, as Superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy, and Commander-in-Chief of the Pacific Squadron.

The west rose window, entitled "The Coming of Our Lord," speaks in reds which are most spectacular in late afternoon sunlight. Again, a symbol of Christ, the Chi Rho (first two letters of Christ in Greek), is central, and the pinnacle holds another: the pelican, said in legend to feed its young with its own blood.

The Barberi was named after the longtime coach of Curtis High School's football team, who had died shortly before the ship was commissioned. Barberi coached throughout the 1950s, '60s and '70s and was instrumental in the development of scholastic football on Staten Island. On October 15, 2003, the Andrew J. Barberi was involved in a fatal accident. Eleven people died, including one decapitation, and 70 more were injured (including one man who lost his legs), as a result of the Barberi colliding with a pier on Staten Island.

"Named after General Casmir Pulaski, the Polish hero who was mortally wounded at the Siege of Savannah 1779. Begun in 1829 and completed in 1847, the fort was constructed principally under Lt. J.F.K Mansfield. There Robert E. Lee saw his first service after his graduation from West Point.

Fort Pulaski was never garrisoned until its seizure by Georgia troops in 1861 to prevent occupation by Federal forces. On April 10, 1862, Federal batteries on Tybee Island commenced the bombardment of Fort Pulaski. After 30 hours of bombardment as a result of which the walls were breached and its guns disabled. Col H. Olmstead surrendered the Fort. The bombardment marked the first effective use of rifled cannon against a masonry fortification and constituted an epoch in military history.

Abandoned by 1885, Fort Pulaski became a national monument in 1924 and placed under the national park service in 1933."

St. Vincent de Paul RC Church was incorporated and the first mass was celebrated in a converted hall on Centre Street; evidence of this first church can be seen as the upper floor of Altamura's Bakery at 12 West 48 Street; the second church of wood construction, built on Avenue C between 46 and 47 Street, was dedicated on January 28, 1906; it was torn down in 1927 and ground was broken that year for the construction of the third and present church; the Lombard-Romanesque "Basilica" (in architectural design only) by architects Mc Ginnis and Walsh of Boston was dedicated on November 30, 1930; it features a Venetian "Campanile" copied from the one near San Lorenzo Church in Venice; the stained glass windows were produced by the famed Henry Clarke Studio in Dublin;.

While Morristown had an active Anglican community even before the Revolutionary War, a congregation calling itself St. Peter’s was not organized until 1791. Those early worshipers attended services conducted by visiting clergy and held in various places. On January 1, 1827, thirty-eight men and women gathered in the Morristown Baptist Church to draw up an Act of Incorporation for St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. One year later, the parish had called its first permanent rector, the Rev. Benjamin Holmes. Under his leadership, ground was broken in May 1828 for the original St. Peter’s Church building, the first building of stone in Morris County.

Kubel's has been around for as long as I can remember. When we had a house on Long Beach Island I remember going to Kubel's for a beer and an burger. Maureen and I were still dating in the 1960's and I remember watching the some of the Scandinavian people folk dancing in this bar.

The ground was broken for this church by Father Reilly on June 17th, 1911, and the cornerstone was laid by Bishop O'Connor on September 15th, 1912. The dedication on May 30th, 1915.

The graceful, monumental Renaissance Revival-style St. Columba's Church was designed by architect Charles Edwards of Paterson and constructed in 1897 for a prospering Irish-American parish in Newark's Lincoln Park neighborhood. The church and its attached rectory comprise an entire city block and serve as an important architectural landmark, especially because of the prominent tower and unique program of opalescent art glass windows. It reminds me of St. Aloysius in Jersey City
