Completed in 1850 by NY designer John Norris, this Gothic Revival house was offered to General Sherman and his Union men during their occupation of Savannah in 1864 by its owner, Mr. Charles Green. The owner's intent was to save the house from being destroyed. Here Gen Sherman formulated '40 acres and a mule'. It is located on W. Macon Street across from Madison Square. The adjacent church, St. John's Episcopal Church, bought the house in 1943. It became a National Landmark in 1976.
"Named after General Casmir Pulaski, the Polish hero who was mortally wounded at the Siege of Savannah 1779. Begun in 1829 and completed in 1847, the fort was constructed principally under Lt. J.F.K Mansfield. There Robert E. Lee saw his first service after his graduation from West Point.
Fort Pulaski was never garrisoned until its seizure by Georgia troops in 1861 to prevent occupation by Federal forces. On April 10, 1862, Federal batteries on Tybee Island commenced the bombardment of Fort Pulaski. After 30 hours of bombardment as a result of which the walls were breached and its guns disabled. Col H. Olmstead surrendered the Fort. The bombardment marked the first effective use of rifled cannon against a masonry fortification and constituted an epoch in military history.
Abandoned by 1885, Fort Pulaski became a national monument in 1924 and placed under the national park service in 1933."

The embassy of the Russian Federation is situated on "Mount Alto" on Wisconsin Avenue Northwest, and was leased to the Soviet government for 85 years on the basis of the agreement between the USSR and the U.S., concluded in 1969. Under the 1972 agreement, the same territory in Moscow was leased to the U.S. for a new embassy on the same conditions. The second agreement also stated that both sides should start using their new buildings simultaneously.
The embassy was designed by well-known Soviet architect Michael Posokhin, who designed the State Kremlin Palace and a number of other buildings in Moscow. The residential building, the school, the kindergarten and sports grounds were all complete in 1979. Administrative and ceremonial buildings were finished in 1985.
In September 1994, during his visit to the U.S., Russian President Boris Yeltsin and U.S. President Bill Clinton inaugurated the new ceremonial building of the Russian Embassy.

To put Newport in perspective, it has six times as much land as Battery Park City in Lower Manhattan does, and dwarfs the 26-acre development planned for the rail yards on the West Side of Manhattan. Over the past quarter-century, the LeFraks and their partners have invested billions of dollars in Newport. It is not easy to imagine a single real estate family ever building anything so ambitious again in the United States.

The roots for this Chapel can be found among the Rusyns who lived in the region called Carpathian Ruthenia, in and around the Carpathian Mountains. This is the area where the borders of present-day Hungary, Slovakia and Ukraine meet. The Ruthenian Catholic Church is in full communion with the Bishop of Rome. The centerpiece of this chapel is a traditional mosaic of the Byzantine Virgin Orante. Mary is shown in a way that recalls her intervention in 626 A.D. at the church of Vlacherna in Constantinople.

American Airlines requested an aircraft that could fly the USA coast-to-coast nonstop in about eight hours. (Civil Air Regulations then limited domestic flight crews to 8 hours flight time in any 24-hour period. Douglas was reluctant to build the aircraft until American Airlines president C. R. Smith ordered 25 at a price of $40 million, thus covering Douglas' development costs. The DC-7 wing was based on the DC-4 wing with the same span; the fuselage was 3 feet longer than the DC-6.
The Douglas DC-7 is an American transport aircraft built by the Douglas Aircraft Company from 1953 to 1958. It was the last major piston-engine powered transport made by Douglas, coming just a few years before the advent of jet aircraft such as the Boeing 707 and Douglas DC-8.

George Washington is a massive sculpture by Horatio Greenough commissioned for the centennial of U.S President George Washington's birth in February 22, 1732.
Horatio Greenough based “Enthroned Washington” on Phidias' great statue of Zeus Olympios which was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World (and which was destroyed in late Antiquity).
The seated and sandal wearing Washington gazes sternly ahead. He is bare-chested and his right arm and hand gesture with upraised index finger toward heaven. His left palm and forearm cradle a sheathed sword, hilt forward, symbolizing Washington turning over power to the people at the conclusion of the American Revolutionary War.
The U.S. Congress commissioned Greenough to create a statue of Washington for display in the U.S. Capitol rotunda. When the marble statue arrived in Washington, DC in 1841, however, it immediately generated controversy and criticism. Many found the sight of a half-naked Washington offensive, even comical. The statue was relocated to the east lawn of the Capitol in 1843. Disapproval continued and some joked that Washington was desperately reaching for his clothes, then on exhibit at the Patent Office several blocks to the north. In 1908, the statue was brought back indoors when Congress transferred it to the Smithsonian Castle, where it remained until 1964. It was then moved to the new Museum of History and Technology (now the National Museum of American History). The marble statue has been exhibited on the second floor of the museum since that time.

After visiting Fort Pulaski, I drove out to Tybee Island for lunch. My Tom Tom brought me to The Crab Shack. Very chill place; Margaritaville was playing from Sirius Radio. Staff was very nice and the bartender was awesome! I had Deviled Crab with the Shack Stew and washed it down with a Red Stripe. Did I mention there are live gators outside?
The Belcher Ogden Mansion originally housed the family of Elizabeth Associate John Ogden in the mid-18th century. In 1812 Ogden, who had served with distinction in the Revolutionary War, became NJ governor. He entertained the Marquis de Lafayette there in 1823, and enjoyed reliving their joint wartime exploits, especially the culminating victory over the British at the Battle of Yorktown.
Fort Sumter, named after South Carolina Revolutionary War patriot Thomas Sumter, was one of a series of east coast forts built by the United States after the War of 1812. Even though construction started in 1829, the fort was about ninety percent finished by the time Maj. Robert Anderson and his men moved in at Christmas 1860. The fort was constructed with four sides, 170 to 190 feet long that could hold three tiers of guns, and five-foot-thick brink walls. It was designed to house 135 guns and 650 men. Four months before confederate bombardment, the fort housed 15 mounted guns and 85 men. After defending the fort for 34 hours, Maj. Anderson and his men left for New York and the American flag that flew over the fort was replaced by the flag of the Palmetto Guard.
