Two years ago i wandered through the desert with limited knowledge of where this rock was and got there only to realize that i needed to camp out for the night to get the best composition. Sooo this year i went back and got what i was looking for. I love the rock and all its changing beauty. It won't be here forever. Even in the two years that have passed the rock has slowly eroded. I wonder how long it will be around before it is turned to dust.

As I went for my run, last night, there was a beautiful lightning storm happening over the Everglades. Summer is on her way. Can’t wait.

I stopped in Death Valley for a few days on my way back from teaching a timelapse course in Los Angeles, and sure enough Badwater served up one of the most spectacular sunrises I've ever seen in the park. We walked over a mile out into the middle of the salt flats searching for the elusive white zones where the hardpan hadn't been colored brown by sediment, but the #californiadrought has eliminated that possibility. Badwater needs to fill with a solid few feet of runoff in order for the salt to return to it's pure white color, last seen in the area after the monster winter of 2010/2011. Despite the dirt on the salt, I'm still pretty stoked to have seen this colorful #sunrise. #salt #desert @mountainsmith #forgedforlife @au_photos #landscape #color #red #deathvalley #nationalparks @usinterior #december

Really, is there anything better than taking in this view in Kings Canyon National Park? It feels like this boulder was meant to be sat upon and has a front row seat to all of that pure California wilderness.

The milky way rises over Death Valley National Park in early 2019. These places are kept a secret for the most part to protect them. They are very fragile and can they can be damaged very easily. It reality, they are easy to find if you are looking for the right clues.

I was greeted by bioluminescent waves on Assateague Island in Maryland this week for the peak of the Perseid Meteor shower. It was a nice surprise and after 20 minutes I finally captured a nice perseid.

i have planned to run a workshop in another location for it, but after a few cancellations by participants and weather bad, for a 1 night attendee, it was postponed until October. So I took a nigh to myself and enjoyed the show.

This is Megachile coquilletti, a small bee from Yolo County in California. "This bee was collected in the California Central Valley in Yolo County for research on small-scale restoration in agricultural areas. Claire Kremen's 10-year study of hedgerows shows the benefits of planting native shrubs and forbs in agricultural areas for native bees. To learn more about the Kremen Lab and hedgerows, see nature.berkeley.edu/kremenlab/";

Willow Bee. Another set of shots of Andrena macoupinensis. This is one of a clade of bees the only gather pollen from willows. As has been mentioned before, willows are one of the secret powerhouses of pollen and nectar in North America. Stands of which stick around for centuries and create consistent forage for these bees, which may be why willow flowers are green, lacking the color signal of other, more desparate, flowers. Today I woke up in a bit of a grumpy mood as the supposed winter storm was pretty much a dud in Colorado Springs. But, after sitting down I asked myself "I wonder what the gardens look like right now with the fresh snow?"

My answer....absolutely epic.

It’s #nationaltakeahikeday and there’s nothing like a full day out on the trail, the sunset finishing up its show, and the treeline starting to thin as you make your way past the sequoias and back to the trailhead. This picture was snapped in The Giant Forest as we finished a hike through The House and Senate groves and the sunset coupled with the massive trees felt like an appropriate send off and finale to an amazing day. #takeahike #takeahikeday #nationaltakeahikeday

I usually say Everglades National Park is the hardest national park to photograph in. I don’t resent it for that; I respect it. The Everglades is subtle. The Everglades is challenging. High sawgrass prevents you from getting a glimpse of the landscape, save for at specific “windows” or gaps in the brush. The animals can be rare and taciturn.

This weekend, however? Easy.

I can’t believe I got this shot.

The heron didn’t fly off.

The sun and clouds cooperated.

The trees were perfectly lit.

This is EXACTLY what The Everglades is.

This grand show is eternal. It is always sunrise somewhere; the dew is never all dried at once; a shower is forever falling; vapor ever rising. Eternal sunrise, eternal sunset, eternal dawn and gloaming, on seas and continents and islands, each in its turn, as the round earth rolls.

It’s nearly impossible to capture or convey the scale of a Sequoia tree in any medium. Words can’t capture the imposing and grand feeling they give you; photography doesn’t capture the infinite detail and depth that the massive trunks and branches and needles all have, piercing the bright blue sky beyond. No, trying to tell or show people what the Sequoias are like is a fool’s errand. This picture is a fool’s errand, even if I am pleased that my experiment of combining several landscape and portrait oriented shots worked out so it’s possible to see a whole Sequoia in one photograph. The only way to know a Sequoia is to see one and to drink in its marvelous presence as you spend time exploring a grove of these amazing giant citizens of our planet.

This is a composite shot, created from about 5 different images as captured on a Sony A7rIV and combined in Lightroom to get the ONE tree in the whole frame.

It’s #WaterfallWednesday and now that I’ve been home and was able to access @lightroom to fully stitch together shots of #jacksonfalls, I’m excited to show off how cool and secluded and hidden this fall is. Tucked away in a small gorge off the Natchez Trace Parkway, Jackson Falls is a branch of the Duck River and is a sculpted cascade down a 900 foot steep path that descends from the parkway into the gorge itself. While the main part of the falls is at the end of the trail, a whole sheet of water precedes them and cascades down to form the base of the fall which is seen here. With the rocks and trees of the gorge stretching above, the whole environment feels like a walled garden with a spectacular fountain at its center.

Hey everyone! Finally back on here. I have been off of my creative mojo for quite some time now due to some stuff happening back home and have been so busy roaming around the great plains this year chasing storms that I haven't had a lot of "me" time to go out and explore let alone edit new material. But, things are looking up from here, Spring is here and my hiking legs are ready to get back out there and get out of this rut I have been in lately.

This is an image I captured last year hiking through the amazing Sierra Nevada Mountain range as my hiking partner and I scrambled to outrun a snowstorm looming just behind these mountains. We ended up making it with only a few minutes to spare before snow began to fall.

“The redwoods, once seen, leave a mark or create a vision that stays with you always. No one has ever successfully painted or photographed a redwood tree. The feeling they produce is not transferable. From them comes silence and awe. It's not only their unbelievable stature, nor the color which seems to shift and vary under your eyes, no, they are not like any trees we know, they are ambassadors from another time.” - John Steinbeck

You know what’s fun about FLICKR? Getting to revisit old photos and old destinations so you can bring them into your gallery. Here’s Bryce back in December- the snowiest December the park had in 10 years, according to rangers. I was delighted by this. I don’t think I’m ever going to get over the fact that I saw this in person. The moment was perfect. The sun came out. The snow kept falling. The colors of the canyon became more and more vibrant and everything glittered under the snow and ice. Perfection.

Like an ant, roaming below the earth under its hill. I roam "The Narrows" of Zion National Park. A truly breathtaking, and humbling experience. Miles and miles of wading through water and a different, incredible view around every bend.

While hiking the Pacific Crest Trail, a snowstorm rolled in causing us to seek shelter at the next campground. This storm dumped a foot of snow on our next peak. Making the morning climb more difficult than it already was.

When amongst the sequoias of California, you really feel as if you are in a different era. The scale of the place is beyond compression. The age of the trees is beyond compare. The air is sweet. You feel new amongst the oldest and most stable things for miles and eons around.

#onthisday in 1919, 104 years ago, Grand Canyon National Park was established. Although it had previously been a National Monument, and even in spite of its sublime beauty and scale, conservationists fought an uphill battle to safeguard this iconic segment of the American landscape. Locals wanted Arizona to manage the land. They wanted to mine it. They wanted to make it a tourist trap, akin to Niagara Falls. These myopic instances have always amused me but they really reveal the necessity of the National Park Service and the function of a National Park; to save the best of our land, the best of our history for ourselves and sometimes, from ourselves. Today, The Grand Canyon is the second-most visited National Park next to Great Smoky Mountains and perhaps one of the most emblematic of the National Park endeavor.

To me? The Grand Canyon (and Petrified Forest) were my first National Parks outside of Florida. As a small child, my parents took me up and down the East Coast of the US to see all the historical NPS units, but at the ripe old age of 10, they took me to Arizona for my first taste of western wilderness. I often say that my life was never the same after visiting certain National Parks, and The Grand Canyon is one of those parks. Seeing the deepest canyon on earth and marveling at rock that was 1.8 billion years old fundamentally changed my outlook on nature. And, the rest, of course, is history.

Can we make #tectonictuesday a thing? Let’s make #tectonictuesday a thing. Pinnacles is a revelation. Spires and mountains of rock moved by tectonic plates? Probably one of the coolest geological concepts I’ve ever encountered. And, easily, one of the most strangely beautiful and stark environments I’ve ever hiked through. Pinnacles has the best parts of Joshua Tree, Craters of the Moon, and other desert and chaparral parks all rolled into one.

I typically arrive a day early to get situated and see what is looking the best at that moment. These mud cracks were definitely at the top of my list. I will be back in a couple months and I can't wait to return here for some milky way shots.

Fleabanes, this one is Erigeron annuus. This genus is one of the most common weedy plants in the mid-atlantic. A native seemingly able to handle the competition. Its generically attractive to a bees in color and form, but nothing to write to your mother about for food and drink, a flower way down the list of popularity. Probably has to do with ethnically being a composite. Extra credit portion of this post: How many thrips can you find in these 2 pictures? This reminds me of the Highlights magazine that in the Pleistocene was governmentally required to be in every dentist and doctor's office in the country. Picture and specimen by Helen Lowe Metzman.

There was something about listening to the waves crash along the shoreline while the full moon rises and the Milky Way fades that was quite magical to watch. Especially since I had the whole beach to myself.
