I was greeted by bioluminescent waves on Assateague Island in Maryland this week for the peak of the Perseid Meteor shower. It was a nice surprise and after 20 minutes I finally captured a nice perseid.
i have planned to run a workshop in another location for it, but after a few cancellations by participants and weather bad, for a 1 night attendee, it was postponed until October. So I took a nigh to myself and enjoyed the show.

It’s nearly impossible to capture or convey the scale of a Sequoia tree in any medium. Words can’t capture the imposing and grand feeling they give you; photography doesn’t capture the infinite detail and depth that the massive trunks and branches and needles all have, piercing the bright blue sky beyond. No, trying to tell or show people what the Sequoias are like is a fool’s errand. This picture is a fool’s errand, even if I am pleased that my experiment of combining several landscape and portrait oriented shots worked out so it’s possible to see a whole Sequoia in one photograph. The only way to know a Sequoia is to see one and to drink in its marvelous presence as you spend time exploring a grove of these amazing giant citizens of our planet.
This is a composite shot, created from about 5 different images as captured on a Sony A7rIV and combined in Lightroom to get the ONE tree in the whole frame.
“The redwoods, once seen, leave a mark or create a vision that stays with you always. No one has ever successfully painted or photographed a redwood tree. The feeling they produce is not transferable. From them comes silence and awe. It's not only their unbelievable stature, nor the color which seems to shift and vary under your eyes, no, they are not like any trees we know, they are ambassadors from another time.” - John Steinbeck

You know what’s fun about FLICKR? Getting to revisit old photos and old destinations so you can bring them into your gallery. Here’s Bryce back in December- the snowiest December the park had in 10 years, according to rangers. I was delighted by this. I don’t think I’m ever going to get over the fact that I saw this in person. The moment was perfect. The sun came out. The snow kept falling. The colors of the canyon became more and more vibrant and everything glittered under the snow and ice. Perfection.

A glittering and babbling stream, cutting its way through a perfectly green and lush meadow. An exacting wall of evergreens defining the horizon. A snow graced volcano reaching up to a glowing and spangled sky. Lassen is the perfect example of the picture book perfection and sublimity found in a National Park.
#NPS107 - Happy Founders Day! The Organic Act became law #onthisday in 1916 formally creating the National Park Service.
What to say about our favorite government agency on this, its 107th anniversary? The only thing to say, I suppose; that the National Park Service is perhaps our most noble endeavor. What we choose to save on our planet reveals what kind of species we are. Shall we save our tallest mountains? Our deepest canyons? Our oldest trees? Our waters and our skies and our lands and our history? Even our mistakes? Even the most ugly instances of where our culture has stumbled so that we may learn from them and improve? Yes. All that and more. In these uncertain times, when many are actively questioning the purpose and functionality of the National Park Service, may we always remember that what we choose to save about the land and our past is what we choose to save about ourselves. The National Parks are our best idea because they are OUR democratic spaces and they reflect OUR inclusivity and diversity.
May the NPS have its best days before it.
Happy 107th anniversary!

#onthisday in 1919, 104 years ago, Grand Canyon National Park was established. Although it had previously been a National Monument, and even in spite of its sublime beauty and scale, conservationists fought an uphill battle to safeguard this iconic segment of the American landscape. Locals wanted Arizona to manage the land. They wanted to mine it. They wanted to make it a tourist trap, akin to Niagara Falls. These myopic instances have always amused me but they really reveal the necessity of the National Park Service and the function of a National Park; to save the best of our land, the best of our history for ourselves and sometimes, from ourselves. Today, The Grand Canyon is the second-most visited National Park next to Great Smoky Mountains and perhaps one of the most emblematic of the National Park endeavor.
To me? The Grand Canyon (and Petrified Forest) were my first National Parks outside of Florida. As a small child, my parents took me up and down the East Coast of the US to see all the historical NPS units, but at the ripe old age of 10, they took me to Arizona for my first taste of western wilderness. I often say that my life was never the same after visiting certain National Parks, and The Grand Canyon is one of those parks. Seeing the deepest canyon on earth and marveling at rock that was 1.8 billion years old fundamentally changed my outlook on nature. And, the rest, of course, is history.

Out of all the places I have been across the United States. The Badlands have got to be one of my favorite locations by far.
While hiking the Pacific Crest Trail, a snowstorm rolled in causing us to seek shelter at the next campground. This storm dumped a foot of snow on our next peak. Making the morning climb more difficult than it already was.
It’s #WaterfallWednesday and now that I’ve been home and was able to access @lightroom to fully stitch together shots of #jacksonfalls, I’m excited to show off how cool and secluded and hidden this fall is. Tucked away in a small gorge off the Natchez Trace Parkway, Jackson Falls is a branch of the Duck River and is a sculpted cascade down a 900 foot steep path that descends from the parkway into the gorge itself. While the main part of the falls is at the end of the trail, a whole sheet of water precedes them and cascades down to form the base of the fall which is seen here. With the rocks and trees of the gorge stretching above, the whole environment feels like a walled garden with a spectacular fountain at its center.

Like an ant, roaming below the earth under its hill. I roam "The Narrows" of Zion National Park. A truly breathtaking, and humbling experience. Miles and miles of wading through water and a different, incredible view around every bend.
Hey everyone! Finally back on here. I have been off of my creative mojo for quite some time now due to some stuff happening back home and have been so busy roaming around the great plains this year chasing storms that I haven't had a lot of "me" time to go out and explore let alone edit new material. But, things are looking up from here, Spring is here and my hiking legs are ready to get back out there and get out of this rut I have been in lately.
This is an image I captured last year hiking through the amazing Sierra Nevada Mountain range as my hiking partner and I scrambled to outrun a snowstorm looming just behind these mountains. We ended up making it with only a few minutes to spare before snow began to fall.
One year ago today, I was on an adventure and today, the memory of that wonderful day continues to sustain and boost me.

The color palette in Yosemite Valley as the sun sets on a summer day is soulful- bright yellow light fills the space and turns the normally cool and grey soaring walls into temple walls. The shadows deepen into blues and the bright greens of the trees sink back into dark half tones.

“Yosemite Valley, to me, is always a sunrise, a glitter of green and golden wonder in a vast edifice of stone and space. I know of no sculpture, painting or music that exceeds the compelling spiritual command of the soaring shape of granite cliff and dome, of patina of light on rock and forest, and of the thunder and whispering of the falling, flowing waters. At first the colossal aspect may dominate; then we perceive and respond to the delicate and persuasive complex of nature.” - Ansel Adams
I ran my 1st workshop in Death Valley this year for the Total Lunar Eclipse. We had great weather every day and we happened to capture an amazing sunset there the last night.
I typically arrive a day early to get situated and see what is looking the best at that moment. These mud cracks were definitely at the top of my list. I will be back in a couple months and I can't wait to return here for some milky way shots.

When amongst the sequoias of California, you really feel as if you are in a different era. The scale of the place is beyond compression. The age of the trees is beyond compare. The air is sweet. You feel new amongst the oldest and most stable things for miles and eons around.
Can we make #tectonictuesday a thing? Let’s make #tectonictuesday a thing. Pinnacles is a revelation. Spires and mountains of rock moved by tectonic plates? Probably one of the coolest geological concepts I’ve ever encountered. And, easily, one of the most strangely beautiful and stark environments I’ve ever hiked through. Pinnacles has the best parts of Joshua Tree, Craters of the Moon, and other desert and chaparral parks all rolled into one.

Pondhawk. Captured in the MAGLEV trainyard impact zone proposed for USDA public lands outside of Washington D.C. Erythemis simplicicolis to the taxonomists; death from above to the insects on the Research Center, where it hunts them down in low level flights in and around vegetation, gathering them in its legs and eating them alive. Will no longer occur at this site if the trainyard is built. Captured by the entomonewologist Danie Phan. There is an eeriness about this picture. Photo by Anders Croft.

We Are Made One with What We Touch and See
We are resolved into the supreme air,
We are made one with what we touch and see,
With our heart's blood each crimson sun is fair,
With our young lives each spring impassioned tree
Flames into green, the wildest beasts that range
The moor our kinsmen are, all life is one, and all is change.

Last week I tackled Angel's Landing in Zion National Park, Utah. It's a 5 mile hike through the heart of the park, climbing 1500' feet. The last half mile of the hike, which picture here, involves scaling that ridge, climbing 500'. The ridge can be as narrow as 5-6' in some spots. And there are sections of chains, anchored into the rock to keep you on it. It's exhilirating. I had the time of my life climbing it, met a ton of people from all over the world and felt really free during my time scaling it. I fell in love with Zion last week. It's definitely on my list of places to return to.

One year ago today. I had just spent 5 days in Page, AZ, visiting Antelope Canyon, Horseshoe Bend, Zion, Coral Pink Sand Dunes, Waterholes Canyon, Grand-Staircase Escalante, Lake Powell, and so much more. On my way back to Phoenix to fly home I made just enough time to stop by Grand Canyon and finally see it for the first time in my life. I only had a couple hours to spare, which I spent at various overlooks, walking the edge of the rim. It was National Park Week that week, as well. Free entry to all the National Parks. And Grand Canyon is one of the most popular and most expensive, so it was a total madhouse. I set up the shot, set my focal point, and asked another tourist to put the dot on my back and fire a few shots off. The storm in the distance made for the perfect back drop.
I need to go back in the winter sometime. See it with snow on it. Watch the sunrise and set on it. Actually hike down into it. Have you been? Which hike should I do?
