Just returned from a southwest road trip and Bryce Canyon was one of my stops. The late afternoon light was magical to say the least. An amazing place for sure!

#NPS106 - Happy Founders Day! The Organic Act became law #onthisday in 1916 formally creating the National Park Service.

What to say about our favorite government agency on this, its 106th anniversary? The only thing to say, I suppose; that the National Park Service is perhaps our most noble endeavor. What we choose to save on our planet reveals what kind of species we are. Shall we save our tallest mountains? Our deepest canyons? Our oldest trees? Our waters and our skies and our lands and our history? Even our mistakes? Even the most ugly instances of where our culture has stumbled so that we may learn from them and improve? Yes. All that and more. In these uncertain times, when many are actively questioning the purpose and functionality of the National Park Service, may we always remember that what we choose to save about the land and our past is what we choose to save about ourselves. The National Parks are our best idea because they are OUR democratic spaces and they reflect OUR inclusivity and diversity.

May the NPS have its best days before it.

Happy 106th anniversary!

Happy anniversary to one of my favorite places in the world. John Muir’s “Range of Light”, Yosemite, was set aside by the federal government, #onthisdayinhistory , 135 years ago. This action predates the founding of the National Park Service and even Yellowstone’s incorporation as the first National Park. Yosemite came before all of that, set aside under the care of California, for all to enjoy. For me, Yosemite is the place of quiet contemplation and spiritual grandeur that really threw my love of the National Parks into overdrive. It is the best example of what ‘America’s best idea’ is and an inspiration to the world. And today, in 2025, The National Park Service is woefully underfunded, understaffed, abused, and at the whims of a hostile government that is shut down. The park, however, isn’t. Yosemite will remain open, a blessing for those who visit respectfully, but at the whims of those who will abuse and misuse their public lands. Once these places are ruined, they are gone. Once they are misused, they are damaged. We must continue to honor them. We must continue to fight for them. Anything less is capitulation to a government that expects your compliance to a system that is designed to favor the few over the many and totally discount the true meaning of what Yosemite stands for and represents. Speak up. Be a light for the Range of Light.

Today is #indigenouspeoplesday, marking a day to reflect on and celebrate the people of America, who, quite literally, were here first and are still here, to this day. Every group in America, besides them, are immigrants to this land. Today’s society did not passively inherit this land from indigenous societies; history’s long and bloody and gloomy shadow hangs over this continent. Today’s commemoration really encompasses and encapsulates what the mission of most National Parks aim to accomplish: to preserve history at its most unbiased and to show where we have come from and where we are going. When we reflect on our stewardship of indigenous legacies, our way forward to deeper understanding is clear.

One last @mesaverdenps shot for the road- we didn’t see much wildlife on this trip, but we did get to see one of the animals I was eager to see! A collared lizard darting over the rocks and looking to warm up and sun himself in the summer heat.

Don’t be fooled by the recent “make America beautiful again” executive order that’s been signed in the face of the budget bill being passed and seemingly restoring funding for the parks that’s been cut. It’s just a political maneuver to make this administration look like it has to solutions to problems that it has created. Keep calling and speaking out.

To go from the shining white granite of Yosemite and the Eastern Sierra to the glowing red rocks of Utah is a bit of a culture shock, but one that I was really looking forward to on this trip. Finally got to visit @cedarbreaksnps and loved every second- especially the fact that Bristlecone Pines are growing along the rim of the amphitheater, putting two of my favorite elements of two of my favorite national parks in conversation with each other- the hoodoos of Bryce and the Bristlecones of Great Basin. Cedar Breaks is a gem.

Have a wonderful weekend to all. By the way did anyone of you noticed any improvement on Flickr yet? I don't see much but the higher membership.

Hard to believe that this area has been so devastated by wildfires. Hoping and praying that all of LA and the PCH makes a full recovery and we take steps to curb fires like these in the future.

Have a great day.

A moment at Glacier National Park that I will remember and cherish for the rest of my life. Mike Ryan and I were treated to an unbelievable sunrise on this day which left us in complete awe. Red Eagle Mountain and Mahtotopa Mountain are smothered in the glow of light to the left. Little Chief Mountain dominates in the middle and a good portion of Citadel Peak is on the right side of the frame. I can't say enough about the beauty of this park and when combined with light it is off the charts.

Gates of the Valley, Yosemite National Park

Have a great week ahead everyone!

Great weekend to all.

Spider Rock might be one of the most visually arresting landmarks in the entire National Park Service- a massive stone tower, shining in the sun and surrounded by the walls of an undulating and bending canyon. What a delight.

Much like Monument Valley, Canyon de Chelly isn’t just part of the iconic landscape of the American Southwest, it is still a living and breathing and active community within the Navajo Nation- it is the only National Monument that is not on Federal Land, but instead, on Navajo Nation land. Spider Rock, a towering monolith of sandstone in the canyon is believed to be the home of Spider Grandmother, a spiritual figure who gives advice, medicinal cures, and help. Mindfulness of the privilege of being here is the way to go.

Across Utah and Arizona, you are in the Navajo Nation. In Navajo, sacred land is referred to as Diné Bikéyah. This land belongs to the people. Hopitutskwa, Pueblos, and Núu-agha-tʉvʉ-pʉ̱ (Ute) land is also found across these two states and at archeological sites. It is an honor to see them.

Good morning, Flickr! This is probably one of my favorite pictures that I’ve ever taken. This is actually *NINE* images all stitched together and merged to create a realistic panorama of the Golden Gate Bridge. I spent an hour or two wandering The Presidio last week getting these images and soaking in the atmosphere (and the fog!) of San Francisco.

Merry Christmas to all !!

Monument Valley isn’t just the iconic landscape of the American Southwest across history and pop culture, it is still a living and breathing and active community within the Navajo Nation- Tsé Bii’ Ndzisgaii, or Valley of Rocks.Traveling through this region is not akin to traveling through a National Park- you are often very close to homes and the patterns of everyday life in the Navajo Nation.

John Mayer lyrics that fit perfectly and a long exposure that captures the motion of the sea spray, really well, if I’m going to toot my own horn about my photography. Really proud and happy with this shot. I love long exposures that capture motion and those lines of the water splashing make me very happy.

I think I finally got a picture of these trees that I’m happy with.

I see them nearly every time I’m in The Everglades.

I take a picture every time.

The trees are partially obscured by the sawgrass from the road and they always face into or away from the sun. Nightmare.

This weekend was different.

Grinnell Peak and Mount Wilbur dominate the view from Swiftcurrent Lake in Glacier National Park.

Mayhem Ball. Tonight. Miami. Can’t wait.

This part of Antelope Canyon X looks like a lady made out of stone with her hair, flowing behind her. One of the guides also called her the “mother of the canyon”. While she was easy to see last year in earlier morning light, this year, cloaked in the darkness of the afternoon, she was much more ethereal, evocative, and hard to see.

Traveling through a slot canyon is an exercise in light and texture. Most times, the light is muted and soft and ethereal, causing the whole environment to glow and be uniform. But other moments, where the walls either recede or extend in dramatic fashion, bend the light and throw perspective into sharp relief. That’s what you’re seeing here.

This image in Bryce Canyon NP of the fleeting light and the nature of the landscape, I felt was appropriately titled. As the light skirted the area, I took great joy picking out scenes like this. Hope everyone has a great weekend!

It's simple, really, the making of a rainbow -- just some sunlight and some water. Simple. But easy...not in the least. It's reflection, refraction, dispersion -- phenomenal meteorological science; Mother Nature's fierce magic! It requires great skill, effort, practice, patience. Simple, but not easy. And, oh, how beautifully she shines when all of that energy synchronizes! :)

Thank you, Mother Nature, for showing off a fantastically dreamy rainbow over the Rainbow Mountains! Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, NV

I must have stood at this spot and photographed it about a 100 times and every single time the exhilaration is like its the very first time.

Also, wanted to share the good news that half a dozen or so of my pictures are now being sold in 75 art galleries worldwide thanks to Yellowkorner. Yaaay!

Have a wonderful week everyone.

Thrilled and proud and humbled that this shot made Honorable Mention in this year's Everglades Photo Contest!

It was hard not to stare in awe at these gentle giants. Inside, scars and stories from over 1,000 years ago remain as old wildfire burn scars carve the trees hollow whilst new life took over and bandaged over the wounds. Throw in a magical morning of fog and rays and you are quite literally living a scene out of Narnia.

Have a great week to all.

Here we are, 21 years past a massive national tragedy, and in the midst of another tragedy. I was 10 when 9/11 happened. At the time, I thought the world was ending. As I grew older, I realized more and more that I had lived through an event that changed the world in ways subtle and obvious. I have that feeling again, now. Much as we were on that bright September day in 2001, our shortcomings and inadequacies are laid bare. May we rebuild stronger and better and kinder and wiser, as we have done before.
