Sometimes while hiking through the Sierras. I wanted to pinch me, because surely I was dreaming when I came across views like this.
On a lonely lonesome gravel road 3.5 hours from cell phone service sits a dry lakebed called the "Racetrack Playa". At this location mysteriously moving rocks slide across a slick / icy surface during the winter months creating one of the most magical environments on earth,

We Are Made One with What We Touch and See
We are resolved into the supreme air,
We are made one with what we touch and see,
With our heart's blood each crimson sun is fair,
With our young lives each spring impassioned tree
Flames into green, the wildest beasts that range
The moor our kinsmen are, all life is one, and all is change.

Composite image of Delicate Arch at sunset. Both images were taken at sunset, with the sky being taken to the West at the Grand Canyon a few days after the arch. I rarely do composites (and it shows) but this idea has been on my mind for some time. Hope you enjoy!
Happy anniversary to one of my favorite places in the world. John Muir's "Range of Light", Yosemite, was set aside by the federal government, today, 132 years ago. This action predates the founding of the National Park Service and even Yellowstone's incorporation as the first National Park. Yosemite came before all of that, set aside under the care of California, for all to enjoy. For me, Yosemite is the place of quiet contemplation and spiritual grandeur that really threw my love of the National Parks into overdrive. It is the best example of what 'America's best idea' is and an inspiration to the world. Happy anniversary, friend. I’m so happy I got to revisit you this summer and I can’t wait to return, again and again.

And...here is the back of the jumping spider shown a couple of days ago from the MAGLEV site. Not as tight as the face, but it gives you some sense of the color patterns on the topside. Interesting to ask why the red, why the white front legs, why the white band on the abdomen. Caught by Danie Phan, photo by Anders Croft.

Today is the 137th anniversary of the dedication and unveiling of The Statue of Liberty. The Statue of Liberty is one of the most recognizable symbols of American culture. She is, of course, a personification of the Libertas, the Roman Goddess of liberty and freedom and all the usual patriotic themes that are the hallmarks of an American worldview. That being said, her symbolism and her deeper meanings as a symbol of inclusion and immigration are what truly undergird her as a hallmark of American culture.
Fatefully, she is an immigrant herself- conceived and built in France and given to America as a gift, her creator, Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi deemed her as tacit sign that enlightenment and liberty had a home in America. Additionally- she was built next to Ellis Island: the gateway to America for scores of European immigrants pouring into the country during the turn of the last century. Liberty soon became a sign of welcome, a symbol for the oppressed, and a wide marker of acceptance for all into the greater American culture. Therefore, she is a perfect symbol of American culture at its best- one of immigrants, acceptance, and freedom.
- This is a composite shot of Independence Day fireworks, merged with a shot of The Statue of Liberty to simulate what a ‘true to eye’ firework experience is at the Statue of Liberty, when the shells are launched around Manhattan. The fireworks are shot on on a 70-300mm lens at ISO 500, f12, 5 second exposures merged with a single shot of the statue at 1/100, f22.

"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
Super excited about this one. Hawk Hill is one intense place to go shooting, especially at night, and especially when it’s foggy. What I love about this photograph is that you can actually see the fog moving above the Golden Gate Bridge but you can also see it floating right in front of the hills and catching the beams of light from passing cars. The whole experience was surreal and ethereal and otherworldly; you feel like you’re perched above San Francisco, with the whole of the city and The Bay spread before you while the very air and sky in front of you glows and undulates and flashes with streaks of shimmering iridescent vapor. And of course, there’s The Golden Gate Bridge, looming in front of you, overpowering all in its presence, and happily spanning the whole horizon and defining the space. San Francisco is magic.

Staring out into Zion Canyon, you get a very prehistoric feel. Seeing a flying dinosaur soaring through the valley wouldn’t be out of the ordinary by the looks of the place.
2 billion years of history is here. Uplift, and erosion from water and wind has helped shape this beautiful valley. Today it offers amazing hiking and climbing on these stunning creations.
Zion National Park is often referred to as one of the most beautiful places on the planet. And, for good reason.
*EXIF info did not record. Taken with my now retired iPhone 7.
Fun Fact: The elusive Desert Tortoise (Gopherus agassizii) is at it's most active right now, in early spring, when air temperatures are rising & flower blooms are abundant! (Let the post-hibernation chow-down commence!)
•
If you are fortunate enough to cross paths with one of these guys, please remember that they are a federally protected species, & human interaction (which can be fatally stressful for the tortoise) should be strictly kept to an observation. Like Mom says: "Look with your eyes, not with your hands." :)
This fellow was observed at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, NV; shell was 12-14 inches long.
These last four weeks filled with auroras, flights, concerts with friends and tornadoes has been one of the wildest rides of my life. When my time clock comes ticking to an end, I want to be so exhausted living each day like its my last that I can peacefully sleep forever. Its been an exhausting month, but I've never felt more alive.
Sometimes, the second you’re done traveling, and in the absence of all that motion and purpose and fun and discovery, you immediately miss it. You crave it. You could have just gotten off the plane. You could have just unpacked your bag. It doesn’t matter. You’ll get in the car, put on some music, start to drive, and realize you’re not doing to see something new. You’re not going to see something exciting or relaxing. This is just a regular old drive to run errands or pick up groceries. It’s not one of those special drives down a winding road laden with purpose and anticipation. It’s just a regular day. And on that regular day you begin to crave adventure again.

Taken on top of the 4x4 drive road "Georgia's Pass" sits an amazing color of Mountains. They don't call it "Colorful Colorado" for nothing!
Are any mints not attractive to bees? Probably, but I can't think of any off the top of my head. Here, is a great one, Agastache foeniculum, Anise Hyssop (aka Blue Giant Hyssop). Particularly loved up by bumble bees in my yard. It doesn't occur naturally in MD, but I have just potted up some seedling yellow giant hyssop, which is native to Maryland, and will compare. Mints seem always good for a good bee show. Better than TV for sure. Specimen and photo by Helen Lowe Metzman.

“We have built no national temples but the Capitol; we consult no common oracle but the Constitution.” - Representative Rufus Choate, 1833
:
:
#onthisday, September 17th, in 1787, the American experiment in enlightened government took a major step forward and a united government was formed. This new unified government simultaneously compounded and compromised the power of the 13 states that had once been colonies and had been separate governments. Although the constitution that was formed at that time had deep flaws in it, and supported existing power structures and social, racial, and gendered hegemony and unbalanced hierarchy, the crux of the idea behind the new United States was compromise and change. The Constitution was only ratified if it could be changed and amended leading to the unlimited potential for growth and betterment of the people that maintain the government. The fundamental principle is still with us today. And may it always be so. May we always grow and change to meet the times we are in.

Just wanted to say thanks for such a warm welcome back to Flickr. I've had this account for over 10 years but I've finally decided to start using it more religiously thanks to the internet not really having a dedicated forum for photography, these days. I'm overjoyed by the warm welcome and feedback I've gotten here. I've found my people!

I'm going to be posting a ton of images over the next few weeks, as I attempt to get caught up on photos from my trips.
After quitting the PCT due to a knee injury, and quite frankly, not having fun with it anymore. I decided to take a road trip across the country for a few weeks. Making stops in Utah, The Badlands, Mount Rushmore, and even storm chasing in North and South Dakota. So, you'll be seeing a lot of new material over the next few weeks!
Back in 2016 I took my first trip to Utah and instantly feel in love with its natural beauty. While I only spent one day and night in Bryce Canyon it was one of my favorite places I visited. Even in June I woke up to temps in the low 40’s as I enjoyed this sunrise.
Caught these beauties awake from their daytime siesta, and in fluffy red sand, no less! Dune Evening Primroses (Oenotheras deltoides) basking in the bright waxing moonlight, captured in a lucky few seconds semi-uninterrupted by the armies of foraging Sphinx Moths that are sweeping the nighttime desert right now! (Translation: this took several, very patient attempts to capture, and that back flower still got nailed by one of those pterodactyl-sized moths!)

First you must plant the seed, then you must wait for it to grow into something beautiful.
Really, is there anything better than taking in this view in Kings Canyon National Park? It feels like this boulder was meant to be sat upon and has a front row seat to all of that pure California wilderness.

Two years ago i wandered through the desert with limited knowledge of where this rock was and got there only to realize that i needed to camp out for the night to get the best composition. Sooo this year i went back and got what i was looking for. I love the rock and all its changing beauty. It won't be here forever. Even in the two years that have passed the rock has slowly eroded. I wonder how long it will be around before it is turned to dust.
After a day of hiking Arches National Park, we made camp on the BLM land on the outer reaches of Canyonlands National Park. While we were making dinner, a big storm front rolled in from the South, swallowing up all of the stars I was hoping to shoot. A huge bolt of lightning, just out of frame lit up the entire canyon enough for me to capture this photo in a single frame.

It’s #nationaltakeahikeday and there’s nothing like a full day out on the trail, the sunset finishing up its show, and the treeline starting to thin as you make your way past the sequoias and back to the trailhead. This picture was snapped in The Giant Forest as we finished a hike through The House and Senate groves and the sunset coupled with the massive trees felt like an appropriate send off and finale to an amazing day. #takeahike #takeahikeday #nationaltakeahikeday

I usually say Everglades National Park is the hardest national park to photograph in. I don’t resent it for that; I respect it. The Everglades is subtle. The Everglades is challenging. High sawgrass prevents you from getting a glimpse of the landscape, save for at specific “windows” or gaps in the brush. The animals can be rare and taciturn.
This weekend, however? Easy.
I can’t believe I got this shot.
The heron didn’t fly off.
The sun and clouds cooperated.
The trees were perfectly lit.
This is EXACTLY what The Everglades is.
This grand show is eternal. It is always sunrise somewhere; the dew is never all dried at once; a shower is forever falling; vapor ever rising. Eternal sunrise, eternal sunset, eternal dawn and gloaming, on seas and continents and islands, each in its turn, as the round earth rolls.

I stopped in Death Valley for a few days on my way back from teaching a timelapse course in Los Angeles, and sure enough Badwater served up one of the most spectacular sunrises I've ever seen in the park. We walked over a mile out into the middle of the salt flats searching for the elusive white zones where the hardpan hadn't been colored brown by sediment, but the #californiadrought has eliminated that possibility. Badwater needs to fill with a solid few feet of runoff in order for the salt to return to it's pure white color, last seen in the area after the monster winter of 2010/2011. Despite the dirt on the salt, I'm still pretty stoked to have seen this colorful #sunrise. #salt #desert @mountainsmith #forgedforlife @au_photos #landscape #color #red #deathvalley #nationalparks @usinterior #december

Willow Bee. Another set of shots of Andrena macoupinensis. This is one of a clade of bees the only gather pollen from willows. As has been mentioned before, willows are one of the secret powerhouses of pollen and nectar in North America. Stands of which stick around for centuries and create consistent forage for these bees, which may be why willow flowers are green, lacking the color signal of other, more desparate, flowers.

The milky way rises over Death Valley National Park in early 2019. These places are kept a secret for the most part to protect them. They are very fragile and can they can be damaged very easily. It reality, they are easy to find if you are looking for the right clues.
