~60% complete. Probably another several iterations before it's ready for a techtalk (Fri Mar 28); +2-3 versions for the interface training session (mid-Apr), another half dozen iterations and then maybe it will be primetime: wiki+book ready.

So I am having dinner with an oil executive and he says "...now, I hold Mike responsible...". he was referring to all of the addled phone users who are missing out on the life that is so evidently taking place, right in front of them.
And he wasn't just referring to human behavior in restaurant environments that we see so commonly. Nor did he mean the 'time wasting' which can be understandable in: subways, airports, and train stations. In this particular case, he was plainly disappointed in (all of the) people who seem so unaware of the physical world. Like these museum visitors in the midst of the terra-cotta warriors - the quarter-scale ones - that are a wonder of the world.
Talk about putting the ethical shoe on the other foot. Maybe I should try having dinner with someone from Goldman Sachs soon.
Here is my 5 minute Ignite talk on the tenets of interface design.

in japan, it takes three people to drive a bullet train to its destination - communicating with hand signals + voice commands for redundancy, that must lead to safety, i guess.
the white gloved men work in concert as one signal begets the next one and so forth.
Imagine a World
Without Free Knowledge
For over a decade, we have spent millions of hours building the largest encyclopedia in human history. Right now, the U.S. Congress is considering legislation that could fatally damage the free and open Internet. For 24 hours, to raise awareness, we are blacking out Wikipedia. Learn more.

"Many websites today are engaging in an awareness campaign about two pieces of pending U.S. anti-piracy legislation -- SOPA (The Stop Online Piracy Act) and PIPA (The Protect IP Act).
If you would like to join Internet users around the world in this campaign, you may choose to symbolically darken Flickr photos (yours or others), depleting the web of rich content and letting others know about the potentially harmful impact of these bills. For more information see blog.flickr.net/.
I do not wish to participate. Do not darken my photos. Darken this photo."

Fucking England. Why can't we sell all our transport infrastructure to the French?
An inch of snow and the entire transport network in the south-east collapses into anarchy.
That said, this really is the best piece of UI design I've ever seen. It's Transport for London's real-time tube map and all the lines are greyed out, unless there's a problem, when they show up in their normal colour.
It's perfect, because anyone who uses London's transport enough to check how fucked it is can just glance at it for a moment and see whether or not their journey is gonna be like this morning's or not.
Love it.
Except this morning.
A Flickr user has darkened this photo for up to 24 hours as a symbolic gesture to raise awareness about the potential impact of two pieces of pending U.S. anti-piracy legislation - SOPA (The Stop Online Piracy Act) and PIPA (The Protect IP Act).
While the inclusion of this blackout screen is merely a symbolic gesture -- not an actual allegation that this photo violates any copyright -- a user wanted you to take note of the harmful impact these bills could have on innovation online. For more information see blog.flickr.net/.
Tweet to help spread the word.
Show the photo anyway. I do not wish to participate. Do not darken my photos.
the camera industry continues to smush the functionality of image making and storymaking into a single user interface design. this image of a professional photographer in beijing suggests that fitness for purpose is still valued in industrial design.

"Cur-" means the current value is decreasing (cooling off) and that can be seen by the decrease (slope) in the curve, on the lcd graphic.
each line is updated every 10 seconds (shifted upwards). the bottom (4th) line is always 'live' and shows instantaneous value.

This week, we will answer the following question: “How does the brain choose to guide the eye from one place to the other?”
Yes, you read it correctly. Because it is the brain that guides the eye so it can find the information the brain needs to solve a task.
