This law library has some interesting book titles when one looks closely. There are the usual Civil, Penal and Moral Codes, but also the Law of Fresco Painting, Counterfeiting, and Laws on Seduction. A fun one is Martial Law by Brady, he was the VFW caretaker who watched over the project and lived in the Tower’s apartment. The man on the left with the pipe is thought to be, patron of the arts, William Gerstle.

“Joining the artist in the library are family and friends. The artist is reading a Hebrew book. Fellow artist John Langley Howard reaches for a Marx book, Ralph Stackpole learns about the destruction of the Rivera mural at Rockefeller Center in New York, and Beniamino Bufano reads about his proposed St. Francis statue.”

Solid Oak Seal for the US District Courthouse, San Jose

From our next project in progress—this is a custom 48” solid Oak seal for the US District Courthouse we are redesigning in San Jose. The seals are made with a CNC router and hand-tooled, with a layered finish. This bad boy weighs in a 85 lbs is made of joined California Black Oak, all pieces selected and milled from rough slabs of the same tree

We have custom made two of these in different finishes to match the interior of the two largest courtrooms in San Jose. Previously we made a 42” version for the Oakland federal courthouse and a 36” redwood version for the new courthouse in McKinleyville.

Each seal is hand-crafted by our partner Woodlab of Eureka, led by master craftsman Jeremy Harris.

Additionally, the program includes several hundred historical community photographs with narratives depicting the four counties this courthouse serves, Santa Clara, Monterey, Santa Cruz and San Benito. We are coordinating the public space historical program with column wraps of vintage maps from the 1800’s and curated historical judicial quotes. The judges' portraits for the ceremonial courtroom are being reframed into AMCI produced 22K gold-leaf closed corner frames. The feature artwork for the courtrooms will be high-resolution reproductions of the murals from the 1930s produced during the time of the New Deal under the Treasure Relief Art Program (TRAP) and other programs, such as the murals of Coit Tower. Recently, we completed the installation of 24 mural reproductions from Coit tower that are the defining artwork in the 12 primary courtrooms of the San Francisco US District Courthouse.

The San Jose Courthouse is the location where the likes of Apple and Samsung duke it out over trademark matters as well as cases of tax fraud, bank robbery and terrorism.

Reducing Recidivism Through Evidence - Based Reentry Practices

Organized by Dr. E. Bernard Moore

Judge Louis Goodman (1892-1961) was appointed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt to a seat on the United States District Court for the Northern District of California on November 9, 1942. He became known for his unwavering dedication to the rights of the individual in the face of the anti-Japanese sentiment that swept the nation during WWII and unjustly focused on Japanese Americans.

Judge Goodman's case in Eureka was especially noteworthy in protecting the rights of interns who the government tried to conscript to the military despite their rights being taken away. It was an extremely honorable act on his part, albeit damaging to his career as around the country the resisting internees were routinely sent to federal prison normally.
