Gracias.

I don´t like to upload a lot of photos from the same place or event, so sorry if you´re bored about watching my photos from this parade. This is my personal tribute to those who were working for months in their costumes, travelled from different places and stood a very hard afternoon, with more than 30ºC, organizing an spectacular parade commemorating the 30th Anniversary of "The Empire Strikes Back". Thank you.

Austrian / Croatian design collective Numen / For Use develops a new site-specific installation for Z33's high spaces.

The project consists of flexible nets suspended in air to form a floating "landscape" open for visitors to climb in and explore. The installation resembles biomorphic architecture and urban utopias of former decades.

I used to visit Gloucester regularly between 1986 and 1997. This shopping centre was opened in the 1980's and was very popular. It closed in 2006/07. The docks area seemed much quieter on this visit during January 2009 than I remember.

My Mum used to get a piece of salt beef every Christmas, and once got it back home, boil it for three hours.

Never appealed to me then.

But later on I got a taste for it, now Christmas is Christmas without some salt beef.

So, here is ours bubbling away, once it had simmered for three hours, allow to cool a bit then cut when still warm to make home made Rueben sandwiches.

Yummy to the extreme.

And then with several pints of stock to make lots of gravy with too.

Floriade.

Floriade is a word used for a large international flower exhibition held in the Netherlands every ten years. It moves to a different Dutch city every time. It is also used by the ACT for its bulb and tulip festival each year. As a major world producer of flowers and bulbs the Netherlands also has a tulip festival annually at the Keukenhof Garden, the world’s largest garden. Keukenhof covers about 65 acres (32 hectares) and displays seven million bulbs, mainly tulips. In Australia we are lucky to have such a large tulip festival annually in Canberra saving us the expense of travel to Keukenhof! But there are other tulip festivals in Australia including ones in the Dandenongs in Victoria, at Bowral in the NSW Highlands and Wynyard in Tasmania. All regions produce tulips commercially as well as having festivals.

Tulips.

Tulips belong to the Lilly family and there 109 species of tulips and hundreds of garden hybrids or cultivars. Many tulips come from Turkey and Iran but some come from Europe, China and North America. The Netherlands is the world’s largest commercial grower of tulip bulbs and flowers. The flowers are popular with gardeners the world over. Most tulips are of a single colour but a virus carried by an aphid has led to multicoloured and variegated varieties. The cup shape of the tulip is easily recognisable. Some fancy species now have ruffled edges (called parrot tulips) and the most common variety grown in Australian gardens is the Monet Tulip which comes in a huge range of colours from red, yellow, orange, white and variegated. The Queen of the Night is a common “black” variety for gardens and it comes in the parrot form too.

Tulip Mania.

It seems hard to credit but tulips once led to a mania and bulbs used to cost literally the equivalent of thousands of dollars. This occurred during the Golden Age of Holland in the mid 1630s. Tulips were a new introduction to Holland then. Within a couple of years and by 1636 tulip bulbs had become the fourth leading export of the Netherlands. Tulips became so fashionable with the wealthy in Holland and France that prices began to skyrocket in early 1636.At their peak a tulip bulb was costing ten times the annual income of a skilled craftsman in Holland. The high prices added to the frenzy as more and more people tried to buy bulbs. An investment “bubble” occurred and as we all known bubbles burst. Tulips were bought to demonstrate wealth and to decorate the fancy rural estates of wealthy Dutch merchants. The intensity of a single colour flower was greatly appreciated. The tulip was new and novel in Europe. At its height of price one merchant offered 12 acres of land for a single tulip bulb of a variegated kind. It was these striped tulips that were most highly prized. These bulbs were named after Dutch generals and aristocrats. The prices boomed as traders signed contracts (futures trading) to buy bulbs at the end of the season after they had flowered. If prices rose in the meantime traders made big profits. Often no bulbs changed hands, just money on contracts and future contracts. At other times some bulbs were sold or traded up to ten times a day! Thus the boom took off and prices spiralled upwards. Price surges had occurred in 1621, 1630 and finally the big surge in 1635-6. Suddenly prices fell in February 1636. Some sellers reneged on contracts. Fortunes were lost by some traders and buyers. Bulbs that sold for 5,000 Dutch guilders a few weeks before were suddenly worth only 50 guilders! The situation was exacerbated by bubonic plague around Haarlem the main bulb growing district in 1636. The mania, as it was properly called, has been told in several books, novels and Dutch painters of the times often depicted tulip flowers. Recent historical research has indicated that only a limited number of traders and merchants engaged in this trade and the “bubble” had no great economic impact on the Netherlands, although it did affect some traders financially. The bursting of the bubble was mainly provoked by a new Dutch law in 1636 that would remove the obligation on traders to actually buy bulbs in the future even if they had signed contracts to do so. How amazing that a beautiful flower could set off a mania and that “value” could be so unrelated to the actual object- a short lived bulb!

Now that I've tested other cameras and lenes excessively on cherry trees, I thought I'd give the Voigtländer lens a chance too. The result is in line with the positive impression I have of this lens.

The Voigtländer Ultron 40 mm f/2 SLII ASPH is an excellent lens, mechanically as well as optically. It harmonizes very well with the Nikon D100. I am leaving it on that camera body all the time.

Should you worry about the manual focusing, don't. The lens communicates electronically with the camera body and the green LED that indicates that the onject at the selected focusing point is in focus is a great help and very accurate. In bad light, the manual focusing is actually faster than an autofocus would.

On the window of what used to be a liquor/convenience store on the north exit of the Morse el stop.

This memorial looks like it was printed out and then xeroxed onto a sticker for application on the window. Given that the letters show some pretty horrendous anti-aliasing and that there appears to have been a graff-style name above, it's likely that it was a digital photo at some point.

The sign itself has held up pretty well given where it is (you can see some pretty bad cracking on the bricks) but it does look like someone tried to scrub the name out...which raises some interesting questions.

Apropos of nothing, while I was walking to the beach after taking this, a couple guys were sitting down. One asked the other, "how can you drink so much this early (about 11am)? You're drinking right when you wake up! What I do is before I go to bed, I put all the beers I've got in my pants pocket so when I wake up they're so damn hot I don't want to drink them." Presumably he then has to put them back in the fridge so by the time they're the right temperature it's a more appropriate hour for drinking.

I used a 14" Beauty dish as the main with a 18" grided Softbox for the green/blue light (I removed the color in post as I didn't like it afterwards)and a bare goboed B800 with a mixture of stacked gels to get the color. And last but not least a gridded 32" Octobox as a very light fill up close. I had to keep the light output in front low to reduce the contamination on the gray background which it was already doing. I could have needed a 10-20 degree grid on my B800 to control light spill better. I did what I could with what I had on hand in my small space.

In lightroom I added two adjustment layers / brushes where I used one with Yellow and one with dark red to give the gradation in color from yellow orange to orange to red orange, A blue layer looked pretty good also but I decided against it. I also played with the sliders to darken it as well. A light Vignette added to top it off. Adjustment brushes used to bring out detail in his hair and eyes.. I blurred the back of the chair as well in layers using PSPX5

.I knew I was gong to alter the colors this way, I just wanted a base color that would work and after boosting the orange in the HSL tools then it looked good to start working on.
