For you Art only, not for Sale on a CD or Collage Sheet

Explored September 23, 2008 #197

I got the urge for a good ol' SP today for some reason. It looks like the last one I took wearing this same shirt a long time ago. You'll have to find it yourself. :-)

BTW, for those of you who have requested Facebook friendship or used to be and no longer are, please don't take it personal.

I'm limiting my Facebook to folks I've met IRL.

Sometimes you see some odd things along the road. This is either Indiana or Ohio backroad.

It could be your lucky day, in hell....

Using a light strip and a little creativity, we were able to bring some life to the dark and quiet Stumphouse Tunnel in Walhalla, SC.

Using a hand built photogate to capture droplets of orange juice falling into a mixture of blackcurrent squash, vinegar and milk.

I used to think this is a Sarah Bernhardt peony, but now I have doubts. I have another (Sarah Bernhardt), right next to this one, and it is so fully doubled, almost 'frilly,' quite different.

Whatever this is, it's my favorite peony on the whole planet. (But then... I haven't seen them all....) It is extremely hardy, surviving past winters down into the -70sF (-55 to -60C) and comes back each spring with beautiful blooms in summer, with no protection other than growing in a bed against the south side of my house.

If you have any ideas to it's variety, I'd love to hear them. I am sure I would recognize it's name if I saw it, as I have only grown a half dozen varieties of peony, only four successfully.

This does not smell like authorized use to Peanut ;)

This controller is used by cosmonauts for manual return on Soyuz capsule. They can hold it close to their chest while taking many g's. Ed Lu (who flew Soyuz) told me that if you are using it, something has gone wrong with al of the control systems, and you have to guess as to the thrust vectors.

Under ideal end-of-mission situations, an automatic re-entry system will return the Soyuz vehicle and crew from space safely back to the ground. However, for certain hardware and software malfunctions, the crew will be required to manually fly the Soyuz back to Earth through the atmosphere. To do this, cosmonauts use a hand controller that varies the aerodynamic lift on the capsule. Their objective is to manipulate the lift forces on the Soyuz descent module such that they will land as close as possible to the designated site where the recovery team will be waiting for them. There are safety protective buttons, which need to be unlocked. The mechanical interlock on the top hinges allow access to only one side at a time (preventing accidental activation). There are the follow buttons to use, starting at the bottom of the controller:

l. РУС – manual ( hand) controlled descent

2. TC- track descent

3. manual focus

4. БСР- ballistic descent manual

Using the photo of the cyclamen, I abstracted the flowers into shapes. Not sure if it goes as far as I had hoped.

Bench 'out of use' sign at the very quiet Halesworth railway station, Suffolk. In fact none of the benches were to be 'used' even though hardly any passengers transit through here.

Volkswagen Maggiolino

Top: Using the gril peice for the kidney grill is nothing ground breaking, but a little bit of angle can change the whole appearance of the front. So that's how I managed that, with some beaut old peices

Bottom: As those seats would stick out a bit, a little ore work is need to get them smooth. being cpnnected to the wheels beans all the wight is going though this so it needs to be strong. Upon editting I realised that that 1x4 could be a 1x8 so it could be stronger still :,)

I used to know just what I wanted and just where to go.

More than ever I could use a coincidence,

But now I walk alone and talk about it when I know.

Well it must be cheaper than buying sarnies at Trafalgar Square prices...

Tip

Using cardboard or flags for hard shadows is an awesome trick.

Make sure you place the object as close as possible to the model otherwise the shadow will not be hard enough.

Used the CMN Lothian President for this one. Taken apart but just flatted down to get rid of the harlequin colour blocks and take the gloss off the white.

Window 'stickers' (several!)removed with T-cut and the model repainted with a coat of primer, 2 x undercoats and 2 x Phoenix white gloss. Not a bad white finish for a brush job!

Red line is a cheat - adhesive silver vinyl strip pre-painted and fixed into place.

This was actually a pig to do with everything being a bit too delicate (lost wipers as soon as touched!) and taking apart needs great care especially around the glued-in glazing.

Used the ef300 F4L IS USM with the X2 III extender on the 5D3, found that AF with the extender is *glacially* slow, completely useless for trying to catch smaller flighty birds but big slow ones like this - it's (almost) adequate. Keeper rate is truly dismal regardless of lens used.

The combination of frequent image degradation on my L tele primes + AF braking *massively* restricts the usability of the x2 III extender.

Using the car headlights again......

I had pulled my car over beside the Devil's Golf Course at Death Valley and this caught my eye...

using the Viltrox E/Z adapter to mount Sony E-mount lenses on the Z-Mount Nikons... 😮 now I can use the Voigtlander Heliar 15mm on the Zf too...without buying a "new" one

The Japanese used these foxholes during the "suicide raid" in their fight against our forces. 1 June, 1943.

Shortly before Chichagof Bay was taken by our forces the Japanese, realizing that they were trapped, pulled out of this area with all their able men. Those who were disabled and unable to participate in the withdrawal were killed by the Japanese themselves or were allowed to commit suicide. They carried only their arms and very little rations. They attacked the American lines and broke through the portion of our line located on the high ground overlooking the corridor between Chichagof and Sarana Bays, in an attempt to reach Massacre Beach and capture our 105mm howitzer batteries located there, which they planned to use against our forces. A regimental CP was surrounded, and a few officers and men were killed. The Japanese then split up into groups. A part of them attacked the supply dumps and took food. They continued their attack up the valley through the area just behind the high knoll overlooking Massacre Bay where they were finally stopped by organized American lines.
