A welcome return to my old home of East Midlands Airport, which I haven't properly visited for well over 5 years since moving away to Birmingham... A 2 day stay at East Midlands Airport was needed to witness both passenger for the afternoon and cargo traffic which is most active during the evening.
One of the many reasons to visit East Midlands Airport was to capture it's huge cargo operation which continues to expand on a yearly basis, even after COVID-19. UPS is the second largest cargo airline worldwide behind FedEx Express; the carrier operates from 15 hubs around the world including their Worldport in Louisville, Kentucky.
UPS operates 2 hubs in Europe, the largest being Cologne/Bonn which is the second largest cargo hub overall by UPS (which is in the plans to visit for 2023). Their second hub is located at East Midlands Airport, which sees very frequent visitors from very recently their Boeing 747s and Boeing 767s. East Midlands Airport has for years been a strategic location for UPS, but has recently expanded following the opening of their brand new and expanded air hub in 2021, on the site of what was a popular spot for aviation enthusiasts (me included!)
Since 11th September 2021, Boeing 747s became regularly scheduled on their 5 times weekly flights (5X237/232) replacing Boeing 767-300Fs. The flight operates from their East Coast hub in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with a stop-over in East Midlands Airport before continuing on to Cologne/Bonn, and the same is true for the return flight to Philadelphia. UPS also occasionally provide additional ad-hoc flights from Louisville, as well as from Philadelphia and Cologne/Bonn.
At least East Midlands Airport is one of the few locations in the UK that still sees Boeing 747s, considering UPS was one of the last customers to purchase the Jumbo Jet prior to production ending later in 2022. Given the scale of UPS's East Midlands operations, I wouldn't be surprised if more flights are scheduled... Can live and hope their Boeing 757Fs and McDonnell Douglas MD-11Fs will visit at some point!
Currently, UPS operates 41 Boeing 747s, which includes 13 Boeing 747-400Fs and 28 Boeing 747-8Fs.
November Six Two Two Uniform Papa is one of 28 Boeing 747-8Fs operated by UPS, delivered new to the carrier on 3rd September 2020 and she is powered by 4 General Electric GEnx-2B67 engines.
