unfortunately we only saw the upper of these falls and this is one of the better shots... it was getting late in the day and longer exposure made for trees to be more blurry then what they should be... they were so beautiful... so lush and green... wow... i wanted to venture to the base of them but knowing we were limited on time decided not to. we missed the trail to get to the lower falls and when we ended up back at the trailhead we ran out of time to... too bad... one of the only disappointing things about this trips was not seeing these falls but i will be back to see them... i know it...
Cataract Falls is located in northern Owen County in the west central part of Indiana. The largest waterfall by volume and by height, (combined height of both upper and lower falls), in the state, it is part of the Lieber State Recreation Area.
Cataract Falls consists of two sets of waterfalls on Mill Creek separated by about 1 mile. Both falls consist of a series of drops. The total height of the Upper Falls is approximately 45 feet.
Upper Shuckburgh's church of St John the Baptist sits on high ground close to Shuckburgh Hall surrounded by beautiful parkland. It is a private estate church not normally accessible to the public and had thus been a mystery to me for years, but happily the owners of the Hall have recently opened both the house and the church up to the public on select open days during the summer months.
The church was heavily restored following Civil War damage and again in the Victorian period, so that little of the medieval fabric remains aside from the lower half of the tower, but the interior is a treasure trove of monuments, the most impressive being in the transept on the south side of the chancel, but many more fine tablets and brasses are mounted throughout the church. There is much rich Victorian decoration and stained glass by William Holland of Warwick (also responsible for much of the decoration inside the Hall) but much earlier armorial glass from the late 16th century can be seen in a south window of the nave.
This church was an absolute joy to explore and having long thought it was one I was unlikely to ever be able to gain access to I'm delighted to have experienced it at last and together with a visit to the hall was well worth the £10 entry.
These lakes sit on a small pass between Mt Massive and a subsidiary ridge known as Bald Eagle. I thought there was only one up there, but there's actually three. No trail either, which makes for some fun.
