Traditional NY houses close to Central Park

St Andrew, Hambleton, Rutland

My plan was to complete all of Rutland today, nine more churches in all to reach the grand total of fifty. I caught the 0600 from Ipswich, arriving Oakham at 0818. The grand cruciform church of that lovely little town didn't open until nine o'clock, and so I cycled out on to the long road which runs up the peninsula into Rutland Water. The road climbs through woods, and there are occasional glimpses of the water below and the feeling that you might be coming onto an island.

The village crowns the hill, water on three sides, and the church sits at the highest point in the village. The setting is delicious, as you might imagine, the church small and squat and yet aisled and clerestoried, with a squat stone spire. You step through the Norman south door into bare stone walls, and a wide, low squarish nave. But this is the perfect setting for the largest collection of stained glass by the Arts and Crafts artist James Egan, installed over the 1890s. There are about ten of them of them, lush and full of expression. Gilded wall murals too, dating from the same decade, so this must have been very high church once. Now, the air of simplicity is perfect for the shock of the glass.

The name of the village was formerly Upper Hambleton. The roadsign outside the church points back to Oakham in one direction, but the other two boards say simply No Through Road. These roads once led to Middle Hambleton and Nether Hambleton in one direction, and to Edith Weston in the other, but both roads, and both other Hambletons, were submerged beneath Rutland Water in 1976.

And so I headed back the way I had come, turning off just before I got back to Oakham for Egleton church.

UpperMustang trekking"Extension of Tibetan plateau, typical Tibetan tradition, Bon (pre-buddhist) and Buddhist culture, forbidden area till the last decade, dramatic landscapes, warm-friendly locals, walled city of Loman-thang as it was for hundred years ago, grand views of the snow capped peaks".

Upper Mustang trekking has an average elevation of 3000m and is located to the north of the mountain giants of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna and is therefore north of the main Himalayan range and geographically is part of the highlands of Tibet. It is a vast high valley, arid and dry, characterized by eroded canyons, colorful stratified rock formations and has a barren, desert like appearance.

Mustang is the old kingdom of Lo. Actually the capital of the Mustang district is Jomsom, but the real Tibetan style district lies north of Kagbeni and is usually referred to as Upper Mustang.

One of the most fascinating features of Mustang is literally thousands of cliff dwellings, some of which look completely inaccessible. The most recent theory is that they may date 8-10,000 BC when Mustang was a much greener land. This great classic trek leads you to various Tibetan origin villages through Chele, Lomanthang, Tangbe and towards Muktianth.

Upper Mustang Trekking - Restricted Area trekking…when the earth kisses the sky…

If you are wishing to get well off the beaten track you may wish to consider a journey to some of the fascinating restricted regions of Nepal.

These regions remain pristine wilderness & ecological cultural museums where life has changed very little. An intimate experience of the differing ways people arrange their lives in order to cope with their often harsh physical conditions on some of the toughest terrain on earth. A journey full of questions and contrast awaits everyone who visits this side of Nepal.

Some of the remote areas of Nepal were restricted for foreign visitors until 1991. After multiparty democracy in Nepal, rules have been changed together with new democratic constitution regulations and opened for visiting the most inaccessible and firmly controlled areas in Nepal. The regulation is designed primarily to protect the environment and cultural aspects of the remote regions and provide security and safety for both foreign trekkers and Nepal's northern borders with China.

The treks must be fully arranged through a registered Trekking Company. It has to be fully equipped with tents, all Support staffs, cooks, etc. The trekking agency arranges the trekking permit through a series of applications and guarantee letters. You cannot trek alone in these restricted areas. You should be at least 2 people in the group.

Encounters Nepal has a decade of experience in operating in restricted zones & we will arrange all your trek formalities & logistics for some of the most challenging & thrilling adventures in the great outback of Nepal.

The Upper Geyser Basin (Yellostone National Park) is famous for hosting Old Faithful Geyser. But there is much more in the area than just this famous geyser. The Upper Geyser Basin also boasts the largest concentration of geysers in the world, including many of the worlds largest geysers.

My favorite shot from Sabbaday Falls. I do have to give some "props" to my brother in law who pointed out the falls coming into and going out of the photo at the thirds points.

Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserve and Ecological Reserve represent approximately 1,000 acres of open space. Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserve surrounds the Ecological Reserve. The park includes the Peter and Mary Muth Interpretive Center. Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserve totals approximately 140 acres. The Nature Preserve is made up of the bluffs surrounding the Bay. Three sensitive species use the bluffs: The California Gnatcatcher, San Diego Cactus Wren, and Burrowing Owl. Two important plant communities are found on the bluffs - grasslands and coastal sage scrub. Upper Newport Ecological Reserve totals 752 acres. This coastal wetland, one of the largest in southern California , is renowned as one of the finest bird watching sites in North America. During winter migration up to 35,000 birds may be using the Bay at one time. It is home to six rare or endangered species: Light Footed Clapper Rail, Brown Pelican, Belding's Savannah Sparrow, Black Rail, Peregrine Falcon and California Least Tern. The Bay is home to one endangered plant species - Saltmarsh Bird's Beak. Considered a "critical estuary" habitat - Upper Newport Bay is one of the most pristine remaining estuaries in Southern California.

Eventually, the California Zephyr will leave the Colorado Valley and turn southeast toward Denver, through the six-mile Moffat Tunnel and downhill via a series of switchbacks. If your train is on time, it will do so in the late afternoon; if not, it will be after dark. From Denver, it will continue on to Chicago.

Antelope canyon on the Navajo Indian Reservation in Arizona, USA, is one of the most incredable places in the world, yet very little known. Truth is, I don't know how it could sustain too many visitors. The name in Navajo means "Where water runs through the rocks," and that sums it up. Water has passed through red sandstone for centuries. But unlike other canyons in the south west, this takes the form of flash floods, not a steady flow of water. The floods only occur once every few years. Being on Navajo land it is a tribal park, and you must go with a Navajo guide. Tour angecies are located in Page, AZ, near Lake Powell. Amazingly, hordes of American tourists go to Lake Powell and never know about the amazing canyon so close by.

There is an upper and a lower canyon. In the lower canyon you can you by yourself after paying for a 4 hour permit, or arrange for a guide to come with you. Far fewer people visit the lower canyon, by I highly reccommend it.
