A Univac 1232 Computer ( foreground ), formerly employed by the U.S. Air Force's Satellite Control Facility, in Sunnyvale, California. The 1232 computer was manufactured by Sperry Univac, and was a military version of the UNIVAC 490.

The Smithsonian's Udvar-Hazy Center near Washington Dulles.

In June 1954, the first of two IBM 701s arrived at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The IBM 701 had a 4,096-word memory, each word being 36-bits; equivalent to almost 12 decimal digits. The parallel feature meant the machine did most of its internal operations including arithmetical on whole words and much faster than the Lab’s UNIVAC. According to computation pioneer George Michael, however, the machine “freely made mistakes, but never reported them.” Input for the 701 was prepared on a keypunch and entered through a card reader.

This tape reader was connected to a UNIVAC computer installed at the U.S. Air Force's Satellite Control Facility in Sunnyvale, California, from 1967 through 1990. At this facility, more than a dozen 1230-series computers operated in "real time" as part of a system that controlled and operated satellites for the Air Force, NASA, other government agencies, and commercial firms. The 1232 also supported Space Shuttle missions.

Manufactured by Sperry Univac's St. Paul, Minnesota, division, the 1232 was a military version of the UNIVAC 490 general purpose commercial computer. It used discrete transistors, was optimzed for real-time use, had a 30-bit word length, and initially was supplied with approximately 123 kilobytes of memory.

With the aging of the Grumman S-2 Tracker and the increasing effectiveness of Soviet submarines, the US Navy issued a requirement for a new carrier-based ASW aircraft. Lockheed won the contract, partnering with LTV to design carrier-specific equipment and Univac to design the ASW suite. The resulting S-3A Viking first flew in January 1972 and entered the fleet in February 1974.

While the S-2 integrated the hunter-killer team concept into a single airframe, the S-3 went one step further by completely computerizing the sub-hunting process, integrating the entire sensor suite into one system rather than in several as on the S-2. Initially, this employed a Univac AN/AYK-10 computer served by Texas Instruments AN/APS-116 radar and AN/ASQ-81 MAD sensor in a retractable tail boom. Flown by a crew of four, the S-3’s interior was so efficient that one aviation writer described it as the most compactly designed aircraft in history.

The S-3A--nicknamed "Hoover" for the sound of its engines-- acquired a reputation for being a reliable, easy to fly aircraft, and spawned a number of variants, including the US-3A carrier-onboard delivery (COD) transport aircraft and the ES-3A Shadow Elint variant. A dedicated KS-3A tanker never went into production, but S-3s were increasingly equipped with buddy refuelling packs. When the KA-6D Intruder dedicated tanker was retired from the US Navy in the mid-1990s, the S-3 took over the role, though its relatively slow speed meant it could not accompany strikes into enemy territory. Despite that, the S-3 always had the capability to carry not only antisubmarine ordnance such as torpedoes and depth charges, but also bombs and later the AGM-84 Harpoon antiship missile and AGM-65 Maverick AGM. The S-3’s antiship capability was used in both Gulf Wars: in 1991, a S-3 sank an Iraqi attack boat with conventional bombs, while in 2003 a S-3 destroyed an Iraqi command post with a Maverick in Basra.

Beginning in 1991, the S-3As in service were modified to S-3B standard, with upgraded avionics and a new APS-127V synthetic-aperature radar, giving the S-3B a significant ship-detection and SAR capability as well. Though the ES-3A was withdrawn from service in the mid-1990s, several S-3Bs were converted to littorial reconnaissance (Gray Wolf) and ground surveillance (Brown Boy) roles. With the reduction of submarine threats to the US Navy, the S-3 fleet is being gradually retired; those remaining in service have had their ASW equipment removed and serve primarily as tankers. Their role has been largely replaced by the SH-60B/F Seahawk series, and, aside from a handful of test aircraft, the S-3 was retired in 2009.

Dad got this picture of a S-3A at Malmstrom AFB's 1977 airshow. At the time, the US Navy had not yet adopted low-visibility markings and still carried the more gaudy insignia used during Vietnam, along with the gray over white camouflage scheme. 159390 served with VS-29 ("Dragonfires," hence the fire-breathing Viking ship tail insignia) aboard the USS Enterprise at this time; shortly after this picture was taken, the squadron transferred to the USS Ranger. It was the first Pacific Fleet S-3 squadron, and so likely this aircraft was brand new at the time. 159390 enjoyed a long career and was retired in 2005.

USS Nereus (AS-17) was a Fulton-class submarine tender in the United States Navy. According to Greek mythology, Nereus was the eldest son of Pontus and Gaia, and one of the manifestations of the Old Man of the Sea.

Nereus was laid down on 12 October 1943, at Mare Island Navy Yard, Vallejo, California; launched 12 February 1945; sponsored by Mrs. A. M. Hurst; and commissioned on 27 October 1945, with Captain L. D. Follmer in command. She was the third vessel to bear the name.

After shakedown in the fall of 1945, the new submarine tender departed 15 December for Japan by way of Pearl Harbor. Arriving Sasebo early in 1946, she stripped 39 Japanese submarines of all usable equipment and material before they were towed to sea for scuttling. US Marine demolition crews then sank the submarines with explosive charges in Operation "Roads End" 1 and 2 April.

After leaving Sasebo, she then proceeded to Subic Bay with stops in Nagasaki and Manila. At Subic, the crew loaded torpedoes for transport back to the US.

Soon underway for home, she arrived in San Diego, California, on 13 May for a year of submarine service and repair work. On 28 June 1947 she got underway for Operation "Blue Nose." This cruise was entirely novel for a submarine tender. Together with the submarines Boarfish (SS-327), Caiman (SS-323), and Cabezon (SS-334), Nereus was assigned to TG 17.3. On 15 July she left for the Aleutian Islands where Rear Admiral Alan R. McCann, Commander Submarine Force Pacific came aboard. The group was underway again 25 July, this time for the Pribiloff Islands. During this transit Army Air Force aircraft based at Adak took part in the antisubmarine training. On 30 July Nereus passed through the Bering Strait and crossed the Arctic Circle.

Following along the International Date Line, the ships of Operation "Blue Nose" sighted pack ice on the morning of 1 August 1947. After reaching 72’15’ north latitude, the ships continued independently along the ice pack to determine its shape.

Before returning to her home port of San Diego, Nereus visited Norton Bay, Kodiak, Juneau, and Vancouver The cruise was followed by the ship's first overhaul, at Mare Island.

Starting in 1948 Nereus was primarily engaged in submarine repair and services at San Diego. During the next two decades, Nereus made occasional cruises to Pearl Harbor; to Acapulco, Mexico; and various west coast ports. In 1948 she was camera-ship photographing the sinking of cruiser Salt Lake City (CA-25) some 130 miles off the west coast. In the spring of 1955, she accompanied submarines Tunny (SSG-282), Carbonero (SS-337) and Cusk (SS-348) to Pearl Harbor and acted as observer ship and advance base headquarters during the first firing of operational missiles from submarines.

1960–1971

In November 1960 Halibut (SSGN-587) came alongside Nereus, the first nuclear submarine to be serviced by a tender on the west coast. The following year she ministered to fleet ballistic missile (Polaris) submarine Theodore Roosevelt. In the fall of 1964, Nereus provided underwater support for the operational evaluation of the ASROC weapons system. Two years later her versatility in servicing Shields (DD-596) won her praise from ComSubPac, and the destroyer’s captain.

Nereus entered the U.S. Naval Shipyard at Mare Island on 1 November for overhaul until 7 April 1967. Following refresher training she reported to ComSubFlot 1 for duty on 11 May. That month she visited Acapulco, Mexico, and became flagship for ComSubFlot 1 and ComSubRon 5. In the fall of 1967, UNIVAC 1500 data processing equipment was installed to speed the tender operations. Into 1970 the tender served the submarines of the Pacific Fleet keeping them at peak readiness.

Nereus was later decommissioned in 1971,[1] and, as of July 2012, it was to leave the Maritime Administration’s Reserve Fleet at Suisun Bay to be broken apart at ESCO Marine Inc. in Brownsville, TX after being scrubbed of marine growth & loose exterior paint in the dry docks of Allied Defense Recycling (California Dry Dock Solutions) at Mare Island.[2]

A core memory panel from a Univac III

Automatic computing topped the list of needs for a new laboratory being built in the early '50s by the University of California on the site of a decommissioned naval air station in Livermore, now known as Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. A UNIVAC I was ordered even before the official opening. An air-conditioned building for the machine was the first major construction project at Livermore, and movers arrived with the computer in January 1953.

When I was hired by Univac I was sent to Illion, NY for eight consecutive months for extensive training on repairing large scale mainframe computers. This was eight hours a day five days a week. You were taught computer/process design and troubleshooting using logic diagrams and in most cases repairing to the component level. When I returned to my field office and reported to my manager who hired me, He forgot what I looked like in the eight months I was gone and I had to reintroduce myself to him to start the job I was originally hired to do. Technical training that long and concentrated is gone and relegated to history.
