Most noticeable on the left is the Aqua, is a beautiful new building located near the harbour with an ornate exterior design achieved by pouring each concrete floor plate in a unique wavy pattern. The external variations mean some residents have spacious balconies that are very long and wide; others have ornamental balconies that are very short and far too narrow even for a chair.

Perhaps the most unique building on campus, this church is home to the School of Media and Public Affairs' Electronic Media program. The cornerstone for the Union Methodist Church was laid July 1, 1843 and the church was founded February 13, 1846. After it was construction, church administrators began renting the building for use as a private school for a neighboring church. The building was also used as a hospital during the Civil War. The stained glass windows were installed in 1910. By the 1930s GW students were filling both the choir and the pews, as the university move to Foggy Bottom in 1912 had brought new members to the church. The church provided a social room for students, and even rooms for classes, meetings and music rehearsals. The 1960s and ‘70s brought social changes that affected the church. Over time the church's congregation dwindled and the church merged with Concordia Church (1920 G Street, N.W.) January 1, 1975. In 1985 the University began leasing the building from the United Church. An article in the October 30, 2000 Hatchet, reproduced below, suggested that ghosts inhabit the building.

Occasionally I get a chill down my back when I walk down the halls of Building XX, junior electronic media major Clark Harding said. Many faculty members and students believe Building XX, the laboratory for Electronic Media Program at 814 20th Street is haunted. The off-white building standing between Tower Video and Building YY of the Electronic Media Program features a large circular stained-glass window and ancient-looking architecture — easily explained by the building’s history.
The unusual academic structure was built in 1854 as a Union Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1862 the church was used as a hospital for Confederate soldiers during the Civil War, and a year later as a shelter for the Union army. People who have worked in the building for years say they believe the spirits that fill the old church date back to its days as a hospital. GW started leasing the building in 1985 and gutted it about 10 years ago to make room for new production facilities, according to Wendy Harmic, chief engineer for the Electronic Media Program. That is when strange things began happening, said Harmic, who believes whatever spirits resided within or beneath the walls of the building were disturbed when GW remodeled it.
Strange apparitions have mysteriously appeared before faculty members and rumors have recently begun circulating among students. Harding said there have been instances of the building’s elevator door opening and closing when no one was around to push the buttons. Rumors of hearing doors open and close when the building is completely locked, smelling a distinct type of tobacco smoke across the hall from room 114 and coughing noises have also surfaced, Harding said. Pamela O’Brien, assistant professor of electronic media, said she smelled smoke in the back stairwell of the building on different occasions. O’Brien said she also heard a strong, continuous cough behind her while she set up for a morning class in the building’s second-floor production studio. Upon turning around O’Brien said she saw no one behind her. O’Brien said it was then that she realized the rumors of ghosts her colleagues had told her were in fact true.
Harmic said she was grabbed by a spirit while working alone in Building XX at about 11 p.m. one night a few years ago. She said while she was leaning back in her chair she felt a man’s hands grab her shoulders. “I looked back and nobody was there,” Harmic said. Harmic said it then began to feel as if she was sitting on the lap of a person. “The entity then wrapped his arms around me,” she said. Petrified, Harmic tried to get up out of the chair but was held down by the strange force, she said. It was not until Harmic pleaded with the spirit to let her go that she was released, she said. For more than a year after her experience with what Harmic swears was a spirit, she said she would not stay in the building after hours.
One night while Harmic and another co-worker were working on some recordings and joking that ghosts did not want them in the building, Harmic said she heard footsteps and “strange things.” Harmic said she played back the recording they were dubbing when they heard the sound to discover a strange murmuring in the background. Cranking the play-back to full volume Harmic played the recording again and a forceful voice said, “Get out, get out, get out!”
That is exactly what Harmic and her co-worker did, as they fled the building as quickly as they could, Harmic said. Building YY, located adjacent to building XX, houses EMDA professor’s offices. The building’s original capacity was a parsonage that housed members of the clergy. Kerric Harvey, associate professor for the School of Media and Public Affairs, said she may have seen an apparition in Building YY. Also working late at night in her office, Harvey said she was tired but she cannot deny what she saw. Harvey was sitting at her desk when she looked into the hallway to see what appeared to be a tall woman dressed in mid-19th century garb, she said. The apparition was in a hurry and quickly fled down the stairs by Harvey’s office door, Harvey said.
Faculty members are not the only ones seeing and feeling the presence of unknown beings. According to Harmic, several years ago during a production class an umbrella sitting on one of the tables jumped up off the table and started opening and closing itself. The electronic media building is moving to the new SMPA building on the corner of 21st and H streets in January. Building XX will once again be turned into a different venue, causing more disruption for the spirits that live there. Who knows what will be awaiting the students who have the opportunity to study in Building XX, or whether they will be studying alone.

Coventry's Cathedral is a unique synthesis of old a new, born of wartime suffering and forged in the spirit of postwar optimism, famous for it's history and for being the most radically modern of Anglican cathedrals. Two cathedral's stand side by side, the ruins of the medieval building, destroyed by incendiary bombs in 1940 and the bold new building designed by Basil Spence and opened in 1962.
It is a common misconception that Coventry lost it's first cathedral in the wartime blitz, but the bombs actually destroyed it's second; the original medieval cathedral was the monastic St Mary's, a large cruciform building believed to have been similar in appearance to Lichfield Cathedral (whose diocese it shared). Tragically it became the only English cathedral to be destroyed during the Reformation, after which it was quickly quarried away, leaving only scant fragments, but enough evidence survives to indicate it's rich decoration (some pieces displayed nearby in the Priory Visitors Centre). Foundations of it's apse were found during the building of the new cathedral in the 1950s, thus technically three cathedrals share the same site.
The mainly 15th century St Michael's parish church became the seat of the new diocese of Coventry in 1918, and being one of the largest parish churches in the country it was upgraded to cathedral status without structural changes (unlike most 'parish church' cathedrals created in the early 20th century). It lasted in this role a mere 22 years before being burned to the ground in the 1940 Coventry Blitz, leaving only the outer walls and the magnificent tapering tower and spire (the extensive arcades and clerestoreys collapsed completely in the fire, precipitated by the roof reinforcement girders, installed in the Victorian restoration, that buckled in the intense heat).
The determination to rebuild the cathedral in some form was born on the day of the bombing, however it wasn't until the mid 1950s that a competition was held and Sir Basil Spence's design was chosen. Spence had been so moved by experiencing the ruined church he resolved to retain it entirely to serve as a forecourt to the new church. He envisaged the two being linked by a glass screen wall so that the old church would be visible from within the new.
Built between 1957-62 at a right-angle to the ruins, the new cathedral attracted controversy for it's modern form, and yet some modernists argued that it didn't go far enough, afterall there are echoes of the gothic style in the great stone-mullioned windows of the nave and the net vaulting (actually a free-standing canopy) within. What is exceptional is the way art has been used as such an integral part of the building, a watershed moment, revolutionising the concept of religious art in Britain.
Spence employed some of the biggest names in contemporary art to contribute their vision to his; the exterior is adorned with Jacob Epstein's triumphant bronze figures of Archangel Michael (patron of the cathedral) vanquishing the Devil. At the entrance is the remarkable glass wall, engraved by John Hutton with strikingly stylised figures of saints and angels, and allowing the interior of the new to communicate with the ruin. Inside, the great tapestry of Christ in majesty surrounded by the evangelistic creatures, draws the eye beyond the high altar; it was designed by Graham Sutherland and was the largest tapestry ever made.
However one of the greatest features of Coventry is it's wealth of modern stained glass, something Spence resolved to include having witnessed the bleakness of Chartres Cathedral in wartime, when all it's stained glass had been removed. The first window encountered on entering is the enormous 'chess-board' baptistry window filled with stunning abstract glass by John Piper & Patrick Reyntiens, a symphony of glowing colour. The staggered nave walls are illuminated by ten narrow floor to ceiling windows filled with semi-abstract symbolic designs arranged in pairs of dominant colours (green, red, multi-coloured, purple/blue and gold) representing the souls journey to maturity, and revealed gradually as one approaches the altar. This amazing project was the work of three designers led by master glass artist Lawrence Lee of the Royal College of Art along with Keith New and Geoffrey Clarke (each artist designed three of the windows individually and all collaborated on the last).
The cathedral still dazzles the visitor with the boldness of it's vision, but alas, half a century on, it was not a vision to be repeated and few of the churches and cathedrals built since can claim to have embraced the synthesis of art and architecture in the way Basil Spence did at Coventry.
The cathedral is generally open to visitors most days, but now charges an entry fee (a fix for recent financial worries; gone are the frequent days I used to wander around it in search of inspiration!) and sadly visitors are also encouraged to enter by the far end of the building, contrary to Spence's intentions.

A unique resort hotel in San Luis Obispo, CA, the Madonna Inn has 110 outlandishly lavish "themed" rooms, European gardens, and an overall pink vibe that is charming. We stopped particularly to see the Inn's public restrooms -a Roadside America must-see.

Alex & Phyllis Madonna created the Inn, and apparently Mrs. Madonna took over the decor. She designed the ladies' restroom like an extravagant palace. Mr. Madonna apparently felt it was time the men around there had a say, and he one-upped her by designing a mens' room equally lavish, but with a unique addition. The urinal appears to be just a rock wall over a marbled floor. Once a man begins peeing, though, his "stream" activates a laser that starts a waterfall cascading down the rocks....
Update on Inventory: Some are stress tested for science, some are kept because something is unique about them (material, midsole, sole, heel, etc), others for parts. Hobby cobbler who loves to stress test different unique shoes and materials, usually of the outsole, but also enjoy seeing how the different soles and materials hold up, wear down, break. Some get repaired, some just get worn until they are gone and worn down to dust.
I'd like to know which one everyone likes and why. Also, which ones should we stress test next and how.
Some we wear the heel down and not replace the caps, others we remove the heel tube and see how the heel without the tube lasts. Others we bend heels and test the shank and nails or screws that hold it in. Some we change the soles to different materials to test grip. Some we walk on the plastic wedge or wooden heel until it wears flat, sometimes accelerated wood decay with wet days walking outside.

This unique Alfa Romeo 2500S features a two-seater sports body, works by Nestor Salerno In Argentina, and was originally fitted to Clemar Bucci’s 1937 Alfa Romeo 12C. The 12C-37 was not a success in motor racing, and what happened to the four cars in uncertain. It is known that Achlle Varsi raced one at Mar Del Plato in 1948, and the car reappeared in 1953 for the Argentine G.P. in the hands of Clemar Bucci, who was running in the No. 3 position when the engine failed. The car next appeared in 1956 with the two-seater sports body and 2500S engine in John de Boer’s Italian Car Register. Alfa Romeo chassis 912517 is described as fitted with a Sader body built by Nestor Salerno for Clemar Bucci.
n 1989, the Bucci Special was purchased by a car enthusiast of UK. Issued with FIA papers, it also underwent a mechanical restoration at Arnie Johnson's Silverstone Workshop in the 1990's before being repainted. Many classical mid-'50s body styles from cars such as the Aston Martin DB3S, Ferrari's Mondial/Testa Rossa/Monza and Disco Volante are seen on this car.

HISTORICAL IMPORTANCE
Sarkhej Roza comprises one of the most elegant and unique architectural complexes of Ahmedabad. In its architecture, Sarkhej Roza is an example of the early Islamic architectural culture of the region, which fused Islamic stylistic influences from Persia with
indigenous Hindu and Jain features to form a composite “Indo-Saracenic” architectural style. The architectural style of Sarkhej Roza is a precursor to the Mughal period in a true amalgamation of Hindu, Jain and Islamic styles. Hindu craftsmanship and construction know-how was overlaid on Islamic sense of geometry and scale. The Roza Complex at Sarkhej was built at the advent of Sultanate era.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
At the time when Ahmedabad city was built, which was during the reign of Ahmed Shah (1440-1443 A.D.), Sarkhej was a village with a population consisting of weavers and indigo-dyers who were predominantly Hindu. It became associated with the name of Shaikh Ahmed Khattu Ganj Baksh, a Sufi saint and a friend/advisor to Sultan Ahmed Shah, who in his later years retired to the quiet environment of Sarkhej, away from the city. The saint lived till he was 111 years of age and was greatly venerated during his lifetime. Myths about his miraculous powers are prevalent even today. Lives and teachings of Shaikh Ganj Baksh Khattu Upon his death in 1445, the reigning monarch, Mohammed Shah ordered a mausoleum built in his honour, along with a mosque. The construction of these two monuments were completed in 1451 A.D., by his successor Qutb'ud-Din Ahmed Shah. In the latter half of the 15th century, Sultan Mahmud Begada completed the complex by excavating a central tank and adding a number of pavilions and a small private mosque. Sarkhej now, became a place of repose and meditation; a summer resort for the royal family. Also, he built a mausoleum for himself and his family opposite to that of the saint, where his son Muzzaffar II and his queen, Rajabai were buried.A garden were constructed to commemorate the event. The complex is therefore one of the producand his queents of an important phase in the socio-political history of Gujarat.
