The spotted garden eel, Heteroconger hassi, is a conger of the family Congridae, found in Indo-Pacific oceans at depths of between 7 and 45 m. Length is up to 40 cm, and the body diameter is up to about 14 mm.

The most commonly seen stage in the life cycle, the medusa, is the adult phase of the life cycle. They have 4 pairs of elaborately branched but unfused oral arms. Embedded in the mesoglea of the arms and rest of the body are thousands of zooxanthellae, giving Cassiopea xamachana its greenish color. Exact coloration within the species is variable, the most common is greenish gray-blue. The umbrella, or bell, is flat, saucer shaped and has a well-defined central depression on the exumbrella. This acts as a sucker, helping to keep the jellyfish on the bottom as it gently pulsates. As for the more conspicuous stage, the polyps are of slender design (Sterrer, 1986). I have been missing my fish photos lately so here is an unusual one as good start for this year!
These fish exhibit cryptic behavior. Their specialized camouflage allows them to blend into their environment and remain virtually undetected by both predators and prey. For locomotion, they crutch along the bottom on their pectoral and pelvic fins. They rarely swim. When hunting, they remain motionless waiting for unsuspecting prey to approach within striking distance. Lunging forward, a weedy scorpionfish sucks in its victim. Haddon’s Sea Anemone
This school of anemone fish was living on a Haddon’s Sea Anemone. Usually this arrangement with Haddon’s makes the fish lighter in color. A conical shell was right next to their anemone. The anemone fish attached all their eggs to it. If you zoom in on this photo (flic.kr/p/29F64B9) you can see algae growing on the eggs. The parents (breeding pair) were cleaning the eggs constantly with their mouths.

The Philippine Coral Reef exhibit highlights waters known as the center of marine biodiversity—an area of unbelievable beauty and importance. From the main museum floor, gaze over a shallow, sandy lagoon inhabited by sharks, rays, and schools of fish. Then, at the edge of the lagoon, a 212,000-gallon exhibit plunges into a different world.
At 25 feet deep, the Philippine Coral Reef tank is one of the deepest and largest displays of living coral in the world. Under the surface, thousands of fish mingle with eels, anemones, starfish, and coral, adding up to some of the most dramatic underwater views available without diving. Seen around 60 feet as we transited the fisherman/shark hangout area of the reef. At first i thought this was a Greasy Reefcod, but its size was immense! When i looked at the photos it is clearly not the same grouper. It spent all its time in the rocks and retreating back deeper. I liked this shot best sincethe shadowing of the mouth and luminance on the eye make it looks menacing, but it was a very cautious fish in reality. The lines of the body folded on itself also lend a dynamic effect to the picture.

Beaded Sea Anemones (Heteractis aurora) are a fairly common species in Okinwa. The two banded anemone fish (Amphiprion bicinctus) are also common. They are enticing to take photos of, but can yeild mixed results. This photo is somewhat satisfying with nice detail on both the fish and the anemone.

The lion's mane jellyfish (Cyanea capillata) is the largest known species of jellyfish. Its range is confined to cold, boreal waters of the Arctic, northern Atlantic, and northern Pacific Oceans, seldom found farther south than 42°N latitude. Similar jellyfish, which may be the same species, are known to inhabit seas near Australia and New Zealand. The largest recorded specimen found, washed up on the shore of Massachusetts Bay in 1870, had a bell (body) with a diameter of 7 feet 6 inches (2.29 m) and tentacles 120 feet (37 m) long.[1] Lion's mane jellyfish have been observed below 42°N latitude for some time—specifically in the larger bays of the east coast of the United States. This species is also known as a "lagoon jelly" because it lives in bays, harbors and lagoons in the South Pacific. Spotted jellies have rounded bells and strange clumps of oral arms
with clublike appendages that hang down below. Instead of a single mouth, they have many small mouth openings on their oral-arms, which capture small animal plankton. In addition, each jelly grows a crop of algae, which gives them a greenish-brown color. They harvest some of their food directly from the algae. Feather Stars (Scientific Family: Crinoids) are one of the most peaceful and beautiful starfish. They are a common and fantastic sight on the Great Barrier Reef. There are over 1800 species of starfish globally living in the shallowest waters down to 6000 meters (20000ft) deep. Feather stars make up only just over 500 species of the entire starfish family.
The feather starfish use this arms to filter the food from the passing currents and then pass it down to there mouth. Very different from the traditional starfish that feeds from the bottom and moves along the ground to feed. The feather star has “feet” called cirri that is uses to append itself to fan coral, or other perches where it can feed from a nice passing current.
