The name 'Naso Tang' simply describes its genus while its other common names, the Lipstick Tang or Orangespine Unicornfish, touch on its outstanding appearance. Orangish lips and a pair of spines surrounded by a bright orange area on either side of the caudal peduncle are some of the distinct features that make this fish stand out. For the Chinese, the dragon is a symbol of good luck and prosperity. In the eyes of the Chinese, the dragon fish has the appearance and majesty of the Chinese Dragon, especially the scales - it resembles the scales of a Dragon.
When a Chinese businessman purchased one of these fishes, then strike a big fortune, the rumor mills were working overtime that he attribute his good luck to owning one of these fish. Soon, demand for this fish rocketed as many others hope that keeping a dragon fish will bring them luck.
There are 3 types of Asian Arowana - the Red, Gold and Green. For the Chinese, Red is a lucky color, as evidenced by the large amount of red used during Chinese New Year. This makes the Red dragon fish in high demand, and prices for a good quality red can easily fetch around SG$8,888/=. Gold is also considered lucky. However, it is surprising that Green variety is not very popular and is consider unlucky, especially in Cantonese speaking countries like Hong Kong, Shenzhen and Guangzhou. The Cantonese who keep a green Arowana in their home and often gamble are said to "shee tou meen cheang cheang" (lost till their faces turn green).
Some fishes are unique by having a "mustache" and but some have physical qualities that look like a razor. This razorfish or shrimpfish photo is for my flickr friend Arnel aka www.flickr.com/people/lenareh/ Shrimpfish are nearly transparent and flattened from side to side with long snouts and a sharp-edged belly. A thin, dark stripe runs along its body. It is from this and their shrimp-like appearance that their name is derived. They swim in a synchronized manner with their heads pointing downwards. The purple-striped jelly's lifecycle was first discovered in its entirety at the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
How does a jelly move? The bell pulses to move short distancesâto go farther a jelly rides the current.
Since divers have seen ocean sunfish eating these jellies, we know some fishes must be immune to the sting.
Point Pinos Lighthouse was lit in 1855 to guide ships on the Pacific coast of California. It is the oldest continuously operating lighthouse on the West Coast of the United States and even the lens is original. Alcatraz Island Lighthouse preceded Point Pinos by 8 months, but was replaced in 1909 by the expanding military prison. It is still an active Coast Guard aid to navigation. Museum exhibits and other functions are operated by the city of Pacific Grove, Monterey County, California. The lighthouse is surrounded by the Pacific Grove Municipal Golf Links. Ok so im getting a little more knowledge as to what this thing actually is... an octopus of some kind.... im guessing a Tremoctopus male or something similar..... those white filaments iv'e decided are cnidarian tentacles that it ripped off and is now using as defense. This guy was pretty tiny... maybe 4 inches in length from mantle to tip of longest tentacle. Any guesses?

Another outtake from this shoot. Read story and other pictures now on the blog. I love going through old pictures and shoots. So many times do I discover images that I hadn't selected the first time round and find magic in them. Does that happen to you?

Philippine Coral Reef Gallery ( Source: ) At a depth of 25 feet and holding 212,000 gallons of water, the Philippine Coral Reef is one of the deepest exhibits of live corals in the world. It houses a broad range of aquatic life from the coral reefs and mangroves of the Philippines, one of the most diverse reef systems in the world. These animals include delicate soft and hard corals, blacktip reef sharks, stingrays, and more than 2,000 colorful reef fish.

Chrysaora quinquecirrha (known as the Atlantic sea nettle or East Coast sea nettle) is a widely distributed species of jellyfish that inhabits tropical and subtropical parts of the Atlantic and Indo-Pacific. It is frequently seen along the East Coast of the United States, such as the Chesapeake Bay. It is smaller than the Pacific sea nettle, and has more variable coloration, but is typically pale, pinkish or yellowish, often with radiating more deeply-colored stripes on the exumbrella, especially near the margin. Haddon’s Sea Anemone
This school of anemone fish was living on a Haddon’s Sea Anemone. Usually this arrangement with Haddon’s makes the fish lighter in color. A conical shell was right next to their anemone. The anemone fish attached all their eggs to it. If you zoom in on this photo (flic.kr/p/29F64B9) you can see algae growing on the eggs. The parents (breeding pair) were cleaning the eggs constantly with their mouths.

Slightly more rare in my experience these are quite small fish. I pursued this fish for 5 minutes then gave him a break. Lovely colors. I think of this as the Zispepo fish now!

I had a lot of fun with this soft coral fish. I was toward the back end of my only dive for that day, and noted a very small movemetn in the fronds of this flower pot coral. Through patience and persistence I was able to use my 105mm with my 2.0 teleconverter to get some nice close shots. This fish was in Brownian motion (ceaseless random motion) across the soft coral. I don't think you could use a super macro converter or a magnifier to get these shots since the subject is very dynamic...
