Halloween Theme Music

Lindsey: I'm scared!

Laurie: There's nothing to be scared of.

Tommy: Are you sure?

[Laurie nods]

Tommy: How?

Laurie: I killed him...

Tommy: But you can't kill the boogeyman!

Please view the other images in the first comment. So thrilled to have seen this rare flower which was still so beautiful even as it was beginning to close.

Vancouver's Bloedel Conservatory's 6-foot-1 Titan arum (Amorphophallus titanum), more commonly called the Corpse flower, a rare flower that stinks like rotting meat, opened on Wednesday, [August 18, 2021] beginning its brief, infrequent bloom. [...].

"After just one or two days, the spathe will close and the bloom will begin to collapse into dormancy once again." [...].

The plants are native to the Indonesian island of Sumatra and typically take seven to 10 years to bloom for the first time. Then, they can take as long as a decade to bloom again, though some specimens bloom more frequently. bc.ctvnews.ca/rare-smelly-corpse-flower-now-blooming-at-v...

The titan arum’s flower [...] is surrounded by a structure that resembles a large petal. This structure, known as a spathe, is deep red on the inside but bears a deep green color on the outside. [...].

Corpse Smell

The strong odor of rotting meat that the flower emits increases gradually from sundown to the middle of the night. This is when the pollinators are most active, and these include flesh flies that then go away as morning approaches.

World Records

The world record for titan arum has been changing year to year. [...], in June 2010 the record went to the USA and is currently the world record holder at 10 feet 2.25 inches held by Louis Riccardiello. [...]. www.worldatlas.com/articles/which-is-the-tallest-flower-i...

Blooms only once every 10 years, now at Bloedel Conservatory in Vancouver. It must be happy there because it bloomed in only 7 years! We didn't get to see it open fully because sun was shining on it from the glass dome above (it needs shade); there's a shot of one of the signs outside the Conservatory in comments below - shows what it looks like when open.

It grows only in Sumatra and Java jungles. As it gradually opens, it releases powerful odors to attract pollinators - insects which feed on dead animals or lay their eggs in rotting meat. The potency of the odor gradually increases from late evening until the middle of the night, when carrion beetles and flesh flies are active as pollinators, then tapers off towards morning

Some corpse flowers only bloom once every few decades. The plant's energy is stored in the corm – a swollen stem base typically weighing around 100 lbs. (45 kilograms). The corpse plant has the world's largest known corm, sometimes weighing up to 220 lbs. (100kg). During the non-flowering years, a single leaf, the size of a small tree, shoots up from the corm. This leaf branches out into three sections with each of these sprouting more leaflets. Each year, this shooting leaf dies and a new one grows in its place. After many years, the plant finally gathers enough energy to bloom, and once it does, it can only hold the bloom for 24 to 36 hours before it collapses.

The plant itself grows to around 10 to 15 feet (3 to 4.6 meters) and typically can grow to a massive 8 feet (2.4 m) tall and the leaves can be as big as 13 feet (4 m) wide.

A couple friends from book club stayed until almost 11:30 last night. With no idea for my shot and just a half hour to shoot something, I quickly scanned the garage for something to fit the theme today. I came across this old wooden vice grip, grabbed it and setup quickly. I was too tired to offload my shots and post last night. I'm so tired and so happy it's Friday!!

Today's shot is for The Hereios' theme, the Old.

From a Canalside walk in Manchester ...the face of Uncle Fester

If you haven't been to Gothenburg, I'd like to point out that this is how most houses here look.

title source.

Angel, the Wienie Slinger and sometimes Doo Dah Queen contestant, attempts to get some of Uncle Fester's white makeup on to her mouth. The thing atop Fester's head is an LED strobe light, which wanted to not illuminate as soon as I took the photo. That's why video grabs often work better. Hopefully, Fester will wear this same red smock at the Doo Dah Parade, coming November 18.

The Addams family wishes you a happy Halloween! Are you ready for their new animation film? ;)

Granny, it smells so terrible! The stench wafted down from the attic and drew us up here! I'm hungry already!

Heehehe!! Morticia, you know I always fix my special Ghoul Gruel on Halloween!

My mouth is watering, Granny dear! I'd like a taste now!

Heh! Be careful Gomez. I tried to get a little taste and look at my finger!

Oh, did the gruel burn you, Uncle Fester?

No, it BIT ME!!

AAAHAHAHAHAAA!!

I forget his real name, but the person who shows up at the queen tryouts and the parade as Uncle Fester is in real life a high school chemistry teacher. He manages to have access to blocks of dry ice, which he puts into a pitcher and pours water in it to get that eerie fog effect. And then he sticks battery operated light bulbs into his mouth. In this shot he is doing both. To the right is former queen Narayana, a regular from the beginning (1978), who performs Middle Eastern dancing, but not this time, as there was no room for her to maneuver around. She will no doubt save that for both the parade and the after-party, also slated to be held here.

To evade capture by authorities after his daring but ill advised train robbery attempt, Clyde ducked into a Mom and Pop lamp repair shop with his umbrella. Although he blended well, the fugitive could not hoodwink Spanky, the shop's nervous chihuahua watch dog.

Spanky was subsequently honored by John Walsh and featured on "Cops" and "Street Dogs." To Mom and Pop's dismay, Spanky packed his Milkbones and left the lamp shop for Hollywood. There, he contracted a disabling case of red mange from a mongrel bitch. Clyde savored a great deal of sweet revenge when he learned of Spanky's plight from behind the prison walls.

That sounds like a good name for a rock group, but it simply describes Uncle Fester walking ahead of Refuse Fascism, which has been at every Doo Dah Parade since 2016. In fact, they are practically everywhere, including all of the protest rallies I've been to, both in downtown L.A. and elsewhere.

This was taken just before Fester paused to demonstrate his trick of pouring water into a pitcher with dry ice at the bottom, and then holding the pitcher on the top of his head. In the video of this you can hear one of the RF members speaking as Fester moves around, the pitcher still holding steady on his head.

Although shot nearly a year ago, I've decided to post this now, in order to provide the link to the video, in which you can see this very image. It is a frame capture taken from my Canon EOS Rebel T6 camera, using the Canon 18-55mm zoom lens.

This is the first of a five-part video about the Doo Dah Queen Tryouts of 2018. This first part is more about everybody getting into the mood for the evening's festivities rather than the competition, which begins for real in Part Two. That will be posted on YouTube soon.

I love the way one of the 'Chorus' faces seems to be smoking a lightbulb and looks like Uncle Fester from the Addam's Family!

There actually was an episode of the television show where Fester proposed by mail to his pen-pal, Diana the Circus Bearded Lady.

This panel is taken from the facade of "The Famous Spiegeltent".(Built in Belgium in the 1920s, still going strong as one of the last of the great mirrored, travelling entertainment pavillions) More pictures in the photoset!

On a darker note....

The Man/Woman perfomer was a staple act in 19th and 20th Century sideshows.

The Nazi's passed a law against 'freak shows' in 1937, and sent the now unemployed performers to the concentration camps.

This is early on in Part Three of the 2018 Doo Dah Parade video. I had a great opportunity to grab Uncle Fester doing his act of pouring water into a pitcher with dry ice in it and getting the effect backlit. This photographer obviously wanted to take advantage of it as well, perhaps figuring he could get the two belly dancers later on.

Portland, OR - January 2008

Thing didn't show up this year. Perhaps it got lost, the battery died, or it ran away on its nimble fingers, I don't really know. But as this Fester is fascinated with anything with lights I suppose it is a decent substitute.

This is also a frame capture from HD video, using the Canon EOS Rebel T6, with the 18-55mm lens.

I started sending out various holiday e-cards when I got my first computer back in 2001 and multi-page Scrapbooks followed shortly thereafter. I’ve been doing these Images of Halloween collections since 2003. This is a page from 2009.

Here are several different interpretations of Charles Addams’ classic characters. The Donruss trading cards feature photos of the actors from the TV series, while Remco’s plastic figure is a caricature of series’ star Jackie Coogan as Uncle Fester. The set of soft vinyl figures were candy tube toppers based on the animated series. And the M&M’s advertisement is just plain weird! The cards, Fester figure and Aurora kit all date from 1964 and 1965. The M&M’s ad appeared in 2007.
