G20 summit in Hamburg had no winners. Politically the results of the summit were minor. Socially, the city was left divided. Personally everyone was happy it was over. Peaceful mass-protest was overlaid by pictures of burning cars, barricades, looted shops and police violence. The political argument now is blaming the “other side” and drawing the attention away from the fact, that this event should have never happened in a city like Hamburg in the first place. Time will tell if any conclusions are drawn, responsibilities are taken or if it’s “soldier on” until the next event.
Costs: at least 130 Million Euro
Damage: estimated 12 Million Euro
Casualties: around 400 police and much more than 1.200 protesters injured (estimated)

A bridge spanned over the Sumida and separated me from the madness. The bridge was bright red and simple, yet it connected two very complex areas of the city creating a dichotomy of noise and silence, color and grey, persecution and freedom. Every morning in Roppongi I'd walk across the bridge and take a seat on the steps of the Asahi annex to get some mildly fresh air because even in my sleep the motion of the city made me sick. It never stopped, it never sat still and collectively exhaled it always binged and buzzed and hummed and by the time I got used to the rhythm the beat would kick in and drive me up the walls. The walls were an issue in themselves. Barely taller than me and placed only an arms-length apart the walls wrapped around me like a python and put me to sleep. Sleep was good at this time though, I needed sleep, I needed to be put to sleep because I had done some things on this trip that kept me awake at night. The rooms were small and suffocating and I appreciated their willingness to so forcefully put me out. This bridge was my escape. Life across the river was bland, but that's what I needed to cure the electric neon hangover I was suffering from. Each morning I'd sit there and watch the city life fly by. People so in their element, relaxed and unaware; how'd they do it? A line of children stretching for 300 yards bobbed up and down in their yellow caps, military like in their formalities and structure, but the way they swung their lunch pales was more revealing than their size. The riverboats would untie and float off for the day, headed down river to pick up the tourists and bring them back into the most polluted part of the city. It never made sense to me why people always wanted to see the scum. An hour ride on the Shinkansen would take them to areas so different from their native lands it'd be enough to make them question their existence on earth. Those types of questions aren't what tourists look for though. Tourist look for the familiar, tourists look for the cliché and the areas of a far off land that reinforce their naive perceptions of what life must be like for the inhabitants. From my refuge on the steps across the Sumida, I saw how the pale skinned tourist and the American playboys who felt entitled to the women here, nodded their head in affirmation as they gawked at the hundreds of thousands of regimented business men, all in grey suits, scurry about the city and stuff themselves like sardines into the 8 o'clock train. They smirked and commented on how the Japanese are inherently harder workers, it's easy for them to do this every day, they are disciplined and devoid of the emotion which causes us to break down at least once a week after spending a mere 40 hours in a cubicle. The boat floated on and they, the pale people, nodded in affirmation as the school girls walked by in plaid uniforms. It was common knowledge that all it took was a pair of blue eyes and a little facial hair to live out the pixilated fantasies they had become experts on in the dark corners of their homes while their expired wives slept. It made me sick to think about these men's thoughts, how they'd rationalize their pedophiliac ways by proclaiming that all the women here looked 15. They made me sick, sicker than the sake, but they had none of the pre-drunk charm to accompany their infectious ways. Who was I to judge though? This was the question that haunted me daily. Who was I to judge and take matters into my own hands? I was a foreigner attempting to persuade other foreigners into seeing this land as it really should be seen. I was a white man in a yellow mans world and my existence here was as much of a sham as the smiling faces manufactured, guarded and advertised by extraordinarily tall Nairobian men.
I was aware of my contradiction, but I also had a job to do, and like so many other things we sacrifice for a few bucks, my integrity and ultimately my freedom would wind up being just another bullet point on the list. I first came to Japan 12 years ago as part of a study abroad program. I enrolled for a semesters worth of classes at Kyodai in the heart of Kyoto and lived across the Kamo-gawa River with an elderly couple, Masa and Keoki. Every morning they'd prepare me rice, miso soup, baked salmon skin and green tea. I was grateful in many ways for their hospitality, the most meaningful being the sense of protection they provided me with. Before leaving for Japan I had allowed my analytic ways to dictate every step I took in life. By the time I considered every angle, every possible misstep, whatever I was moving towards had either closed up or found someone more easy going. A large reason why I decided to take a chance on Japan was to change myself. I didn't come here to find some great spiritual meaning amongst temples older than my entire country, I just wanted to force myself into uncontrollable situations, I needed to explore myself. Masa and Keoki provided me with a map for the exploration. They helped me see that an uncalculated step didn't always lead down the wrong path. Inside Kyodai I felt the same sense of protection, the same desire to help me through whether my classmates were conscious of it or not. I met Maki here too and her infectious sense of adventure showed me a whole new side of humanity.
We traveled mostly by bike. Masa had suggested we go talk to one of his friends who lived above the neighborhood sento to rent his. For 5 dollars and a grape soda from the vending machine on the corner, Masa's friends let us rent the bikes indefinitely. I'd follow Maki in and out of traffic, sometimes riding through hundreds of people on the sidewalk, but some how not offending anyone in the process. She had a keen eye for everyday social phenomena and traveling by bike gave her full access to the cities antics and allowed her to share these sightings with me. Lacking rationality yet filled with reason, we'd watch people in their unconcious state, mingle with the stimuli encapsulating them from the moment they open their eyes, to when they close them and then open them again. It was beautiful to watch the struggle between internal dialouge and external supression. Maki was obsessed with the study of a human's response to a world that has given birth to them, a world that has built them. She carried around a notebook filled with hastily scrawled observations of who, what, when and her perception of why. It was a study of her people, it was a study of herself and it'd be a lie if I said I didn't fall for it, the study.
