About this day of the trip:

Day 2

Niagara Falls - Niagara Falls Canada - Toronto (83 miles)

We will continue our tour Niagara Falls by heading into Canada to take the Hornblower Cruise boat ride and see an informational movie at the IMAX Theater. We will also ascend the Skylon Tower. The tour then departs for Toronto, ON, one of Canada's largest cities. There we will visit the CN Tower and guests will have the option to take a Lake Ontario Cruise. During the winter when the cruise is not running, we will instead visit Casa Loma. We will have dinner in historical Chinatown.

Niagara Falls Canada, Canada

Skylon Tower This observation tower on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls offers a bird's-eye views of one of the world's favorite natural wonders. The tower stands 520 feet from street level and 775 feet from the bottom of the falls.

Rainbow Bridge The Rainbow Bridge across the Niagara River connects Niagara, Ontario to Niagara, New York. It is an international landmark and impressive architectural feat. In addition to private vehicles, pedestrians and bikes can cross the bridge for a small toll.

Niagara Falls IMAX This amazing movie experience, presented on an unbelievable IMAX screen, chronicles more than 12,000 years of history and examines human interaction with the falls from ancient time through the people-- like you-- who come to see them today.

Hornblower Niagara Cruise Get ready to get wet: this world-famous boat ride takes passengers as close to the falls as it is possible to get. Formerly Maid of the Mist, Hornblower now runs Niagara cruise operations on the Canadian side of the Falls.

Skylon Revolving Restaurant Lunch The impressive Skylon Tower, jutting into the air above Niagara Falls, features the Revolving Dining Room, a one-of-a-kind eatery the makes a full revolution every hour. Sitting just below the observation deck, guests can enjoy views and food!

Toronto, ON

Casa Loma This century-old Gothic-style house in Toronto was originally the home of financier Sir Henry Mill Pellatt. Today, it serves as a museum that showcases the history of life in Toronto and what life was like in the early 1900s.

CN Tower Toronto's CN Tower is a Canadian icon and one of the most recognizable North American buildings. Made entirely of concrete, this massive monolith was the tallest structure in the world at the time of its completion in 1976.

Ontario Legislative Building The Ontario Legislative Building in Toronto, Ontario, Canada is the seventh structure to function as the parliamentary building of the province of Ontario. This impressive building is in the Richardsonian Romanesque architectural style and was built in 1893.

Anime Detour has played an unbelievably important role in my life. It was my first convention, and my first exposure to an incredible community. But there's more than just that, every Detour I attend seems to have a significant impact on my life.

For example, if it weren't for Anime Detour 2015, I probably wouldn't be a photographer.

Detour 2016 marks the 1-year* anniversary of my decision to take photography seriously, a decision I made entirely because of the flood of positive feedback I got from posting my AD 2015 gallery.

I ended up taking about 1,300 photos over the course of the weekend, most of them were taken during my 7 private shoots. I think next year I will leave more time in my schedule for 'hallway photography', the lighting inside the venue is actually pretty good (if you know where to shoot), and the number of people cosplaying is way above average, as is the average quality of those costumes. (Detour sells out 3-6 months in advance every year, so everyone who gets in REALLY wants to be there, and it shows).

These three images are similarly composed. They are the result of my mid-afternoon drive back north along Rt 1 in Big Sur. The fog was still around as you can see but the color was intense.

This nicely scalloped rocky beach was stunning w/ the long shallows for the water to froth up upon. To give you a sense of scale check out the note that points out the cars on the road north of me, this is a really big vista that almost looks compressed in this shot!

I whispered the word "unbelievable" over and over again as the setting sun appeared to linger. I was there, yet I didn't believe what I was seeing was real. It was truly, unbelievable.

Third meetup of the 010-020 group.

Orlando runs this tourism advertising campaign with a slogan that says, "Orlando! Unbelievably real!" and I think that ranks among the funniest things ever to have come out in advertising. Orlando understands its main criticism is that it's a Disneyfied version of a city, a fake city made of Styrofoam blocks laid down over the last forty years with no culture or history other than "Walt Disney thought the sinkhole lakes were pretty," so they try to fight it with a line straight out of the cartoon version of Pinocchio ... "I'm a REAL boy!"

We saw the real Orlando after we checked into our hotel across the boulevard from Sea World and went to dinner in a zone of chain restaurants from other places. We passed by this real Orlando Boston lobster shack with its giant lobster cars and ate at a make-believe Caribbean shack. I got some rice dish that came in a pineapple. We followed the tradition we'd established this trip and ordered Key lime pies to go, and they gave us thawed Marie Calendar pies topped with merengue manufactured a year ago by a machine in Des Moines.

For what it's worth, there is supposedly an actual downtown to Orlando, but I wasn't interested enough in proving or disproving a point about American culture to go looking for it. I do know there is at least one "real"esque kind of thing in Orlando, though it's still an Orlando kind of "real." It's just Orlando "real" from seven decades ago. We'll start exploring that tomorrow, and that will go on for days.

In the mean time, this concludes Day 8 of our 12-day trip. I promise, we're getting there.

Unbelievable that this much stuff was in that small shed.

...unbelievable

Simple but unbelievably toothsome.

I used manuka honey here for flavor.

One of the off site exhibits is the Royal Navy Submarine Museum which can be found a short journey away and across into Gosport. I went back to Portsmouth to visit this museum in September 2017. This attraction can be found in Hasler road. It is well worth the effort I took the ferry from down the side of Portsmouth Harbour railway station, it was only £2.40 return OAP rate. After you leave the ferry terminal keep travelling left, follow the commemoration plaques in the pathway it takes you over a footbridge over part of the water to arrive at the Museum, about 10 minutes walk no more from the Ferry terminal.

A tour of Alliance begins in the forward torpedo store and room, then on through the accommodation space to the control room, where the tour guide demonstrates the navigation systems including diving and surfacing. The tour continues through the galley and on to the heart of the submarine, the large engine room, before culminating in the aft torpedo compartment, where the guide explains how submariners would escape in an emergency. Along the way, you can also peer through the working periscopes to view Portsmouth Harbour. Having been a Cook in the Royal Navy it was a shock to see the size of the galley ( that’s the kitchen ) on this Submarine. How ever the one cook worked on this in time of war was unbelievable.

Alliance forms the centrepiece of the Royal Navy Submarine Museum along with Holland I and X24, the museum also contains thousands of photographs, documents, ship plans and artefacts. The Royal Navy Submarine Museum is located in Gosport on the former site of HMS Dolphin; home to the Submarine Service for 100 years. The visit will take about two to two and a half hours to complete. A complimentary waterbus takes visitors across the harbour from Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. This ferry although free with your ticket is not as frequent as the main Gosport ferry.

This for me was a very worthwhile visit, to experience going on a World War Two submarine. You have to book the guided tour inside the shop area before you can gain entrance to this submarine. HMS Alliance is Britain’s only remaining World War II submarine and stands as a memorial to the 5,300 British submariners who have lost their lives in service. This fascinating A class submarine was commissioned and designed in 1945 as WW2 came to a close for service in the Far East. She was launched in 1947 but is typical of the submarines that served throughout WW2. Alliance herself saw service throughout the Cold War years.
