On Friday, September 14th 2007, a reported 34 members of the Free Speech Free Trees Student Coalition (as well as one member of the 1964 Free Speech Movement) climbed the fence that UC Police has erected around the Memorial Oak Grove adjacent to California Memorial Stadium in Berkeley. This nonviolent civil disobedience direct action was performed by students to protest UC's plans to destroy the oak grove and the illegitimate presence of the fence, which denies everyone (people and wildlife alike) access to this sacred space and prevents ground support members from providing food, water, and waste disposal services to the tree sitters who have lived in the trees since December 2nd, 2006. Ultimately, a reported 21 students were arrested, charged with misdemeanor trespassing. Their court date is set for October 15th, 2007.
