On the UC Berkeley campus. Taken on my way to the October 2, 2010 Arcade Fire show at the Greek Theatre.
Taken from the Northwest, with Birge Hall (physics) on the left and the newly reopened Bancroft Library on the right. This is an unusual angle for me, since I usually see it from the South or Southwest. Anyway you look at it, though, it's still the symbol of the UC Berkeley campus.
When we hold complete nuts, they pry them loose, biting between the glove and the nut as though the hand were the cup and the nut an acorn. But when the sheel is cracked and the nut itself splintered on the palm, some of them will just sit there, pick a piece, munch it, and then pick another until it's all gone - or a dog drops by, which sends them up the tree in a flash, no matter what.
revisiting this old photo from 2001 (almost exactly 11 years ago to the day!), when i was a newly-minted doctorate -- because today i got word that i have officially been awarded TENURE at Sonoma State -- such a relief!!
and kind of exciting!

In May, I spend a weekend in that city by the bay. Mostly staying and hanging out with Evan, a great friend from high school, as well as considering UC Berkeley for grad school. Also included: Oakland cafés, Palais des Beaux Arts, the Golden Gate, donuts and Chinese food, shiny tech start-ups, trips by BART, and the best weather I was told I would ever experience in San Francisco? It was beautiful, and I hope to be back very soon.
