International House is a multicultural residence established in 1930 to "foster intercultural respect, understanding, lifelong friendships and leadership skills for the promotion of a more tolerant and peaceful world." Perched atop Piedmont Avenue, it was specifically sited next to Fraternity Row, which then mostly excluded foreigners and people of color. Famed residents include Nobel Prize winners Melvin Calvin, Owen Chamberlain, Willis Lamb, Julian Schwinger, Glenn Seaborg and Sr. Geoffrey Wilkinson, Pakistani Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, Sec of Treasury W. Michael Blumenthal, California Govs "Jerry" Brown, and "Pete" Wilson, Congressman Vern Ehlers, and Haakon, Crown Prince of Norway.
