Their specialized bills allow them to break into unopened cones, giving them an advantage over other finch species. This female is a type 4, feeding specifically on Douglas Fir cones.

Rising from the water like the creation of an Expressionist artist, this twisted, distorted willow is an essential part of the diverse marshland habitat at Gray Lodge Preserve. It is estimated that over 1 million water fowl reside here from November through February. The amazing thing is that few people seem to know about this wonderful spot. We make a point to pay a visit every year during the peak months, and we rarely run into more than a handful of people--all of them bird lovers. Check it out if you live nearby.

The curled and twisted stamens will straighten as the flower opens. At this stage, they make me think of triffids.

Macro Mondays Theme my take on Twist! Taken using 36mm Kenko Extension Tube on 50mm f/1.8. 1 light, camera left.
Thelymitra flexuosa. This tiny orchid has found a friend. The flower might be 15mm across making the fly rather tiny too. Most of the Sun Orchids need sunlight before they will open, I was lucky on this day ;-)
I could write something about life's twists and turns and that what is most important is the journey itself rather than the destination we aim for; but looking at that road all I wish I had at the time is a mountain bike.

For 'Macro Mondays' theme of 'PushPull'
For this week's challenge there were so many choices of subject and so many choices of execution. So I decided to continue in my experimentation with my latest buy, a plastic lens from the 1980s, and for the subject to tell myself again to 'Keep it Simple Stupid', KISS!
I found two contrasting colour rubber bands and 'PULLED' them over a piece of expanded polystyrene sheet that I had as packing from a small parcel - I thought the sheet might come in useful at some time!
A surprisingly amount of time was spent getting twists in the bands and the arranging them at right angles. The composition is a familiar one, but then why not?
Some of the aberations in the lens are pretty obvious, barrel distortion, and fall off in definition from the centre but those add something to the character of the photograph. Obviously I'm still learning what is possible and what isn't!

Resembling the head of Medusa, tree roots from 2 mature cedar trees protrude in a tangled mess out of the swampy soil at Coldstream Conservation area north of London, Ontario.

Polar Bears swim quite a lot and the scientific name maritimus reflects this. And just like a dog, when they emerge from the water they shake themselves dry. I managed to catch this bear with a large halo of water droplets propelled by the bear's vigorous shaking. Its neck was twisting right and left rapidly but the fast shutter speed has frozen the action. Most furry animals shake themselves dry when they get out of water, but the one I remember did not shake was a Cougar. I watched this one on Vancouver Island climb out from the sea and the water just poured off it before it bounded off into the forest: www.flickr.com/photos/timmelling/6157345626/in/photolist

Twisted 2: Python twisting away after I disturbed it in dappled shade at Bharatpur bird reserve in India 2002. Amazing camouflage I didn't see it until very close up.
