The Royal Border Bridge spans the River Tweed between Berwick-upon-Tweed and Tweedmouth in Northumberland, England. It is a Grade I listed railway viaduct built between 1847 and 1850, when it was opened by Queen Victoria. It was designed by Robert Stephenson (son of railway pioneer George Stephenson). It was built for the York, Newcastle and Berwick Railway and is still in regular use today, as part of the East Coast Main Line. Despite its name, the bridge does not in fact span the border between England and Scotland, which is approximately three miles further north.

The bridge is 659 metres (2,162 ft) long and constructed in stone except for brick soffits to the arches. It has 28 arches, each spanning 60 feet (18 m). The railway is carried 37 metres (121 ft) above the river level. During 1989, it was electrified as a part of the wider East Coast Main Line electrification scheme. Between 1993 and 1996, the structure underwent significant repair work for the first time in a Railtrack-led project, which was partially funded by English Heritage.

At the time of the making of the picture 'Tweed' was the oldest steam locomotive in the world in regular operation. The 0-4-0T was built in 1873 in the factory of Sharp, Stewart & Co. at Manchester. In 1991 the engine was used by the Saraiya Sugar Works in Sardarnagar, Gorakhpur in India.

The River Tweed is best known as one of the world's greatest salmon fisheries. It catches more Atlantic salmon than any river in the European Union and has been a Mecca for anglers since the 17th Century.

But it is not for fish alone that people are drawn to the Tweed. This 98-mile river, the second longest in Scotland, flows through some of the most beautiful and historic scenery in Britain. In fact, the Tweed forms part of the border between England and Scotland – a frontier which was much disputed in years gone by. Today, the ruins of watchtowers and fortresses add a hint of romance to the pretty borderland scenery.

Sorry for long silence; I've been busy with family chores and now I have exams to write in June so I can't hang around Flickr as much as I would like. Thanks for your comments on my last picture; hope to get round to visiting and catching up on my flickr mails soon.

About this picture: I stumbled on some riders on my way back from the library on Saturday; I wish I got a better shot of this lady but I had to chase after her and my study books are quite heavy!

Hope to be abe to post more this week.

This was shot with the Canon 5D Classic because my Canon 5D Mark II stopped working about two weeks ago; I haven't had time to get it repaired yet.

From WikiPedia: The Tweed Run is a group bicycle ride through the centre of London, in which the cyclists are expected to dress in traditional British cycling attire, particularly tweed plus four suits. Any bicycle is acceptable on the Tweed Run, but classic vintage bicycles are encouraged. Some effort to recreate the spirit of a bygone era is always appreciated.

Taken in Berwick-upon-Tweed, the most northerly town in England that used to be an important Scottish Burgh.

I quickly snapped this photo before the sun rose above the clouds.

A scratchy tweed skirt always needs a nice nylon slip to protect the skin.

Traditional island tweed is characterized by subtle flecks of colour achieved through the use of vegetable dyes, including the lichen dyes called "crottle" (Parmelia saxatilis and Parmelia omphalodes which give deep red- or purple-brown and rusty orange respectively).

The Bliss Tweed Mill is a Grade II listed mill built in 1872 on the outskirts of Chipping Norton in the Oxfordshire Cotswolds. It has since been converted into apartments, while keeping the original architecture. In the Spring the field comes alive as a wild flower meadow and makes for a beautiful foreground. I struck lucky yesterday, as there was only a few minutes of golden sunlight before the sun disappeared behind clouds for the rest of the evening.
