LOADING BOOKS FROM STORAGE UNIT TO UHAUL (3:00 - 4:00 PM)
*You will need a car or to ride with a friend to this location.
LOCATION: Stormin’ Noman’s Self Storage
ADDRESS: Hidden Ln, Horner, WV 26372
GENERAL DIRECTIONS: Head out of Buckhannon towards Weston on Route 33. There is one prominent hill that you go down between Buckhannon and Weston that we call “Buckhannon Mountain.” The storage units are at the bottom of the mountain, and you can see them from the four-lane. You will technically pass them, then turn right onto Hidden Lane and the turn right into the storage units.
NAME OF COMMUNITY PARTNER YOU ARE MEETING: Jennifer Higham
This shift is from 3:00 - 4:00 PM. Because of school traffic, you will likely need to leave campus no later than 2:40 PM to arrive by 3:00 PM. You will be outside, so please dress appropriately.
I will likely be there to help organize volunteers, but I want to explain here so you are prepared. This event is most efficient when we can have three different groups of volunteers. The first group would be the “unpackers.” There will be about 3 - 4 people in the unit, picking up boxes and handing them to the second group. The second group is the biggest group, and these folks are an assembly line between the unit and the Uhaul truck. The third group will be about 4 - 5 people who are loading the Uhaul. If we have enough volunteers, we may even be able to run two assembly lines!
UNLOADING BOOKS FROM UHAUL TO (4:30 - 6:00 PM)
*A car is ideal for going to this location, but it could be walkable with dedication.
LOCATION: Holy Rosary Catholic Church Dining Hall
ADDRESS: 35 Franklin Street, Buckhannon, WV 26201
GENERAL DIRECTIONS: Holy Rosary Catholic Church is located just below St. Joesph’s Hospital off Main Street. However, their parking lot and dining hall area are on the rear side of the church off of Franklin Street. The best landmark to get there would be to go to CVS, drive through their parking lot, turn right on Franklin Street, and continue to the end of the street, where the parking lot will be on your right.
NAME OF COMMUNITY PARTNER YOU ARE MEETING: Jennifer Higham and/or Anne Chopyak
Depending on how quickly all the books are loaded into the Uhaul from the previous group of volunteers, you might be waiting a few moments for the Uhaul to arrive. There are a few shelving units in the Literacy Volunteers Office building (within eyesight of the parking lot) that will need to be moved over to the church dining hall. When the Uhaul arrives, we will divide into three groups. The first group will be the “unloaders.” This will be about 4 people who are designated to hand the boxes out of the Uhaul to the second group. The second group is the biggest group. If possible, we will try to form an assembly line and pass the boxes down the line from the Uhaul into the church. If we don’t have enough people, we must carry them into the church. The next group will be the organizers. This group will help get the boxes of books to the appropriate locations in the church. For example, the boxes typically say “romance,” meaning they go to the category called “romance,” or they will have a letter like “M,” meaning they are books written by an author whose name starts with the letter M.

Please arrive at the location 5 minutes before your scheduled sorting time and remain at the site for the duration of your scheduled time. There will be someone at the church to help orient you to the needed tasks, but generally your role will be to unpack books from boxes and sort them throughout the room. For the most part, the books are already sorted in boxes by genre or by the alphabet letter of the author’s name. You do not have to know anything about books or literature genres to sort, I promise!
WHY is this project important to our community?
Literacy Volunteers has a board of directors whose average age is definitely over the age of 60, maybe even over 70! They definitely are not able to lug around this massive amount of books! The Fall Book Sale is their biggest fundraiser (which helps to not only keep their doors open but also serves to help fund their mission to provide free and confidential, one-on-one tutoring to adults 16+ who need help with reading, basic math, computer skills, and other life skills). Normally the learners they work with read below a third-grade level. To put that into perspective, the Driver’s Education Manual is written on a third-grade reading level. Things like reading a job application, passing a driver’s test, or earning a GED may be challenging for our learners without the support of Literacy’s tutoring services.

Normally the learners they work with read below a third-grade level. To put that into perspective, the Driver’s Education Manual is written on a third-grade reading level. Things like reading a job application, passing a driver’s test, or earning a GED may be challenging for our learners without the support of Literacy’s tutoring services.

There is one prominent hill that you go down between Buckhannon and Weston that we call “Buckhannon Mountain.” The storage units are at the bottom of the mountain, and you can see them from the four-lane. You will technically pass them, then turn right onto Hidden Lane and the turn right into the storage units.
