This represents my first attempt to post a photo taken with my new camera. I have been struggling off and on since January to learn how to link my EOS Rebel 3 to my Apple MiniMac and to learn to use the camera. (It's maual is 485+ pages of largely gibberish and cross references.) Up until now, I haven't been able to get anything to show up on my computer. At least this is a beginning. Now if I can just get the dioptic feature and focusing to work. What I need is a tutor. I'm surprised that there's not an amateur photographers' tutoring service. Maybe after the pandemic is over . . . . .

I have enjoyed seeing some of your postings both because of their quality and because they help me know you are okay.

"New for Fall 1990. Poolside Tutoring Inc. Math, Physics, Pascal Programming. Your professional poolside study guides."

In 1990 I started my first business, a tutoring service for students at the University of North Texas. My business partner Greg Ross gave me my first real-world lesson in marketing: make yourself stand out. He suggested "Poolside Tutoring" because it was a cool, non-threatening name, and people would remember it. We posted flyers like the one on this folder all over campus. The campaign worked; we had many customers, and most of them commented about the name.

To my great surprise and relief, no one ever asked us to produce a pool.

This is one of many curious items collected in JD's House of Miscellany.

Name: Claudia Samaniego

Hometown: Brownsville, Texas

Major: Biochemistry

Expected Graduation: Spring 2016

CNS Council for Diversity Engagement Member

What sparked your interest in science?

Science has been my favorite subject since I was in elementary school. My mom was my 2nd grade science teacher, and she really urged all her students to compete in science fairs. She really reinforced my love for science, and it's been my favorite subject since then.

Why did you choose UT Austin?

My stepdad always really wanted me to go here, and I had never really thought anything of it. However, my 10th grade World History AP teacher talked to me about applying to different universities besides the one back home because he wanted me to explore my options. I then started looking into UT, and I fell in love with it.

How (or why) did you choose your major?

I knew I wanted to major in something science-related. I loved Chemistry in high school so I started out undergrad as a Chemistry major. A friend of mine was a Biochemistry major and I asked him exactly what Biochemistry was. He explained it to me and it sounded interesting enough to change my major. I took my first Biochemistry class a year ago and I thought it was the coolest thing ever.

Over the course of your time here, what have you gained/experienced that you perhaps did not expect?

I think I experienced how to be an adult. As funny as it sounds, juggling organization meetings, jobs, and school really forces someone to mature. I was extremely immature in high school, and I guess I never expected to mature, but college definitely changed that.

What academic programs and student orgs have you participated in?

I have participated in the Hispanic Health Professions Organization (HHPO), Global Medical Brigades, Texas Interdisciplinary Plan Scholars (TIP), Freshman Research Initiative (FRI) and intramural basketball, softball, and soccer.

What has been your most rewarding or exciting experience as a CNS student?

I think my most rewarding experience as a CNS student was finally mastering how to study for a science class.

What advice do you have (or what myth/concern would you like to dispel) for students considering joining CNS?

If you enjoy science, definitely major in it. Don't be afraid of failing in classes as a CNS student. Science is a tough subject, but it's also the best subject. UT offers a lot of tutoring services and other student resources to help you achieve the grades you want, so don't be afraid of majoring in science just because it sounds hard.

If you had to sum up your experience at UT in one sentence, what would it be?

Amazing.

Plans after graduation?

The Yorkshire Air Museum & Allied Air Forces Memorial is an aviation museum in Elvington, York on the site of the former RAF Elvington airfield, a Second World War RAF Bomber Command station. The museum was founded, and first opened to the public, in the mid 1980s.

The museum is one of the largest independent air museums in Britain. It is also the only Allied Air Forces Memorial in Europe. The museum is an accredited museum under Arts Council accreditation scheme. It is a Member of Friends of the Few (Battle of Britain Memorial), the Royal Aeronautical Society, the Museums Association and the Association of Independent Museums.

The Museum is a registered charity (No. 516766) dedicated to the history of aviation and was also set up as a Memorial to all allied air forces personnel, particularly those who served in the Royal Air Force during the Second World War.

Site

Further information: RAF Elvington

The 20-acre (81,000 m2) parkland site includes buildings and hangars, some of which are listed. It incorporates a 7-acre (28,000 m2) managed environment area and a DEFRA and Environment Agency supported self sustainability project called "Nature of Flight". The museum is situated next to a 10,000 ft runway, which is privately owned.

History

Whilst the Royal Air Force carried on using the runway for aircraft landing and take off training until 1992, the buildings and hangars had long been abandoned. In 1980 Rachel Semlyen approached the owners of "what was then an abandoned and derelict wartime site, with the idea of restoring the buildings and creating a museum". In 1983, a group started clearing the undergrowth and the site was ready to be unveiled as the Yorkshire Air Museum in 1986.

Events

The Museum undertakes several annual events each year within the general attraction / entertainment area as well as educational / academic events for specific audiences, plus several corporate events in association with companies such as Bentley, Porsche, banking, government agencies etc. The unique annual Allied Air Forces Memorial Day takes place in September.

Exhibits

The Museum has over 50 aircraft spanning the development of aviation from 1853 up to the latest GR4 Tornado. Several aircraft including Victor, Nimrod, Buccaneer, Sea Devon, SE5a, Eastchurch Kitten, DC3 Dakota are kept live and operated on special "Thunder Days" during the year. Over 20 historic vehicles and a Registered Archive containing over 500,000 historic artefacts and documents are also preserved at the Museum, which is also the Official Archive for the National Aircrew Association and National Air Gunners Association. It is nationally registered and accredited through DCMS/Arts Council England and is a registered charity.

A permanent exhibition on RAF Bomber Command was opened at the museum by life member, Sir David Jason. In 2010 a new exhibition called "Pioneers of Aviation", and funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, was opened featuring the lives and achievements of Sir George Cayley, Sir Barnes Wallis, Robert Blackburn, Nevil Shute and Amy Johnson.

Principal on-site businesses include: Restaurant, Retail Shop, Events, Aircraft Operation Engineering Workshops, Archives and Corporate Business Suite. The museum is also a location for TV and film companies.

You invest a lot of time and even some of your precious marketing funds into creating an appealing brochure that really relays your unique selling proposition to prospective clients, but if you don’t make your brochure accessible, you’re missing out. Showing off your brochures in strategically chosen spaces and using appealing display stands can help spread the word about your business and ensure your hard work is being seen.

In general, spaces where people wait, where there is heavy foot traffic and anyplace people congregate for an event are good choices for displaying your brochures. Which locations are best for your unique business? We’ve created a few good starting points below, based on responses from customers and marketing research. Try one or more of these techniques to increase your marketing ROI when it comes to brochures and to generate awareness and buzz about your brand.

9 Clever Places to Display your Printed Brochures

In your own office or place of business: It’s a natural starting point, but some people skip over it entirely. Placing a stand with brochures about your ancillary services at the checkout point or in the waiting room makes it easy to upsell customers who are already there. Whether you add a brochure about your new photo-facials in your medi-spa waiting room or have a stand promoting your newest set of dog training lessons at the checkout stand at your pup treat bakery, you can market your other services to your existing customers.

At complementary businesses: Create an arrangement with other local businesses that sell products that complement, but don’t compete with yours. Your natural foods and soaps brochure will be right at home at the yoga studio, while the local coffee shop could be an ideal place to display your book or knitting store brochures. Creating reciprocal arrangements with local vendors can help you target customers that are already interested in similar services without directly competing for business.

At special events: Whether your town has an annual Peach festival, a county fair or other big, local event, your brochures need to be there. If you have a presence there, then a brochure stand can help build awareness of your brand and give visitors something to take away with them. If you are not exhibiting, spaces where people wait to buy tickets, enter or even go on rides can be good places to display your brochures.

In your building: If you have an office or location in a mall or building, displaying your brochures in vestibules, by the elevator or where people congregate can help you spread the word. People coming to your building to see one business may not even know you are there, so this is an easy way to alert them to your presence.

Conferences and trade shows: when you attend a show, bring more brochures than you think you need with you. You’ll be able to send them home with visitors, particularly if you add them to a promo gift bag or pair them with another item. A simple but elegant display stand allows prospects to take your brochure even when you’ve stepped away or are with another client.

Include with every mailing: If you are sending an invoice, thank you note, greeting card or any other communication, include one of your brochures outlining everything you have to offer. In most cases, you’re already paying the postage and you’ll be making the recipient aware of your other services, too.

Local Industries: The local Welcome Wagon, your Chamber of Commerce and even real estate offices are great places to display your brochure. These places specifically target newcomers and are good central locations for information for local businesses.

Hotels, Campgrounds and RV Sites: These cater to people visiting the area, if you offer a service or product a visitor or tourist could use, then these are ideal site for your brochure. Advertise your retail shop, restaurant or even emergency dental services to those who are visiting your area but don’t actually live there.

Daycares, gyms and churches: Cater to parents and kids? Then these locations will put your brochure right in front of busy parents and families. Whether you offer kid’s art classes, sell boutique clothing or provide tutoring services, one of these locations could help you find local clients when you display your business cards or brochures.

The Bottom Line

Your brochure only pays off if people see it

Put your brochures where people wait or kill time

Get creative when it comes to local brochure display

Getting your brochures out there is an important part of the marketing process and will help you increase your overall ROI. To learn more about displaying the brochures and printed pieces you’ve worked so hard to create, check out our line of elegant and versatile display stands designed to showcase your materials and grab them the attention they deserve.
