the references for the backwing precreases can easily be remembered when you are aware of how the model is collapsed.
so first collapse the big mountain and valley precreases of the forewing. this is fine but the eye socket should of course curve towards the inside.
so open up the paper again and then recollapse it making sure that the blue point is pushed inside. everything is supposed to work along the grid lines here, so be careeful not to add any new creases.
now, the eye socket is supposed to be pentagonal, so gently push in the paper along the dashed blue line, but don't crease the paper!
the corner of that irregular pentagon is a reference point for the next precrease. the other reference point is the end of feathers on the right edge of the paper.
These photos are from a tutorial on how to make double hair buns.

Saw this great tutorial and just had to make one for my mom. Now I'll have to do one for me and my sister as well.
Start on the left side and re-fold the first two folds along their lines. This should cause a small triangle to go behind the central diamond shape and the whole model will pleat a bit.

Regardless, when you finish you should have the pointed petal and 6 pleats for a center that holds up on its own.
This is the most difficult step, especially whichever you choose to do third. Don't worry if you don't "get" it the first time.

Start by looking at the section at the top. Try to identify the large diamond and the small diamond in the center. You're trying to bring the smaller diamond forward.
