TUTU (Coriaria arborea).

A plant that has attracted much attention because of its poisonous properties is tutu, a shrub growing, at most, to a height of about 20 ft. It occurs in shrubland and in open places in coastal and montane forest throughout New Zealand and the Chatham Islands. It often comes in profusely on cuttings running through damp forest. It is a straggling plant, much branched from the base and with four-angled branches. The leaves are opposite and on slender stems, the whole looking like a pinnate leaf. Each leaf is 1–3 in. long, about broad-ovate and acute. The small flowers are arranged in drooping racemes, 6 in. or more in length. The petals, later juicy and purplish-black, embrace the fruit.

The poisonous principle is a toxin, tutin, which occurs in all parts of the plant except the fleshy petals. Tutu has been responsible for the greatest percentage of stock poisoning by plants in New Zealand. Sheep and cattle are mostly affected. Occasionally poisoning of human beings by honey has been attributed to the honeydew from tutu which has been collected by bees. The genus Coriaria is the only one of the family Coriariaceae. There are about 30 species, mostly shrubs, found in southern Europe, eastern Asia, south and central America, and New Zealand where there are seven other species besides that of C. arborea. Most of these are small shrubs with small leaves. C. plumosa, for example, is a prostrate plant under a foot high with leaves a fraction of an inch long only.

Hladnikia pastinacifolia Rchb., syn.: Falcaria latifolia (Bluff, Nees & Schauer) W.D.J.Koch, Falcaria pastinacifolia (Rchb.) Rchb.f.

EN: Hladnikia, DE: Hladnikia

Family: Apiaceae

Genus: Hladnikia Rchb.

Slo.: rebrinčevolistna hladnikija, hladnikovka

Dat.: June 25. 2008

Lat.: 45.92564 Long.: 13.85919

Code: Bot_0277/2008_DSC_0683

Habitat: stony grassland partly overgrown with bushes, slightly inclined mountain slope, south aspect; calcareous ground, full sun; elevation 1.150 m (3.800 feet); average precipitations 1.800-2.000 mm/year, average temperature 5-6 deg C, on the border between Dinaric and Sub-Mediterranean phytogeographical region.

Substratum: soil.

Place: Next to the trail along the east edge of Mala gora plateau, Mt. Čaven ridge, Trnovski gozd region, Vipavsko, Slovenia EC.

Comment: One has to admit that Hladnikia pastinacifolia isn't a showy plant. Its habit and flowers in umbellate clusters are superficially very similar to so many other white flowering plants of parsley family (Apiaceae). It is also not tall and never forms dense, conspicuous stands but grows scattered, either hidden among other greenery or on rather barren rocky places. It could easily be overseen or regarded as a 'weed'. Yet, botanically, it is probably the most distinguished plant of my country. Its inflorescence is pictured (apart of on post stamps) also on the Slovenian 2 € coin.

From European or global aspect, Hladnikia pastinacifolia is an extremely rare plant. It exclusively grows in an extremely small distribution area of the size of less than 20 x 10 km in Trnovki gozd region, on the mountains pertaining to Mt. Čaven, ridge. Hladnikia pastinacifolia is geologically a very old plant. Being a relict preserved from the time before the ice ages, it is one of the our rare paleoendemic species. Also, it is the only representative of the monotypic genus Hladnikia, the only plant genus restricted solely to my county's territory.

Hladnikia pastinacifolia was found in nineteenth century, on Mt. Čaven, by the Slovene botanist, Franc Hladnik, a priest, teacher and founder of the University Botanical Garden Ljubljana (in 1810), the oldest natural history institution in the country.

Protected according to: Uredba o zavarovanih prostoživečih rastlinskih vrstah, poglavje A, Uradni list RS, št. 46/2004 (Regulation of protected wild plants, chapter A, Official Gazette of Republic Slovenia, no. 46/2004), (2004).

Enlisted in the Slovene Red List of rare and endangered species, marked by "R" representing a rare species.

At first I said I did not like this actress of Anne but as I have analized it more and finally seen the series completely I realize that to this day she is the best actress that has both physical and equal looks to the real anne in her portrait and very good acting.

The Athol Masonic Hall in Severn Street c1827 by Richard Tutin. A former synagogue. The reflections come from the sun bouncing off the side of the Mailbox which is immediately behind camera.

This area is well worth exploring with some lovely buildings which have survived both bombs and developers. Next door is the first Nonconformist school in Brum which opened its doors in 1809. Long since closed to pupils, of course. Available only to prospective buyers of apartments!

Jau par tradīciju kļuvušie 4.maija Latvijas Republikas Neatkarības atjaunošanas dienai veltītie Nacionālo bruņoto spēku dienas pasākumi šogad noritēja Valmierā, pulcējot vairākus tūkstošus valmieriešu un svētku viesu.

Pēc dievkalpojuma Sv. Sīmaņa baznīcā pilsētas centrā norisinājās Nacionālo bruņoto spēku, Valsts robežsardzes un Jaunsardzes vienību un tehnikas parāde. To komandēja Zemessardzes 22.kājnieku bataljona komandieris pulkvežleitnants Māris Tūtins, parādi pieņēma aizsardzības ministrs Raimonds Vējonis un Nacionālo bruņoto spēku komandieris ģenerālleitnants Raimonds Graube.

Parādes priekšgalā Latvijas armijas karogu nesa Zemessardzes 54.inženiertehniskā bataljona karoga vads. Tālāk ierindā soļoja 3.Zemessardzes novada – 19.nodrošinājuma, 22. un 27.kājnieku, 54.inženiertehniskā un Studentu bataljona -, Štāba bataljona, Instruktoru skolas, Sauszemes spēku kājnieku brigādes, Valsts robežsardzes un Jaunsardzes vienības, kā arī ASV karavīri no 173.kājnieku brigādes, kuri pašreiz izvietoti Ādažu bāzē.

Par parādes muzikālo noformējumu rūpējās bruņoto spēku orķestris, ar defilē programmu uzstājās Štāba bataljona Godasardzes rotas karavīri.

Parādē piedalījās arī bruņoto spēku, Valsts robežsardzes, Valsts ugunsdzēsības un glābšanas dienesta tehnikas vienības. To noslēdza helikoptera pārlidojums.
