I watched it eat two Soft-Shelled Turtles and two Crayfish. Then started stalking some more but gave up and started bathing and preening instead.

This gopher turtle lives in the dunes by Caspersen beach along with its many neighbors. It enjoys the sun, the ocean, the good food and the tremendous exercise of climbing the steep slopes in the hot sun. Here it is out for a leisurely walk to mingle with the other beachwalkers.

Photographed on Ashford Hollow Road, West Valley, New York.

Large and aggressive. Don't try and stroke it's chin unless you're happy with fewer fingers.

Thanks everyone, I just get 25,000 views!

Florida Box Turtle, they can move pretty quick when they want too.

Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge, Oceanville, New Jersey

Box Turtles usually just lay one clutch of eggs per year. They dig nests several inches below the soil. Incubation usually lasts three months, but is somewhat dependent on the soil’s temperature and moisture. As in other turtle species, the temperature of the nest determines the sex of the hatchlings. Warmer nests tend to produce females, while cooler nests produce males. Eastern box turtles reach maturity at 10 to 20 years old and can live to be more than 100 years old. Our beautiful world, pass it on.

this pic was taken at the iguana sanctuary in Mexico, this was the only shot I managed to get, someone was holding this little guy, and was about to put him back in the water so I grabbed a quick shot, kinda cute, huh?

EXPLORE: September 30. Whenever there's a lot of rain in my neighborhood, we see turtles passing through the front yard. I suspect they are coming from the wetland area down the road and are moving to higher ground? I have no idea. I'm happy to have them pass through and to stay as long as they like. Some turtles hoping to get fed at the Brevard Zoo in Melbourne, Florida.

This turtle was resting on a log beside the Tip to Tip Trail along the Rideau Canal, Ottawa. The sun was high and the turtle was enjoying its warmth. He was not bothered by having his picture taken and stayed there for a very long time.

This handsome little devil picked a fine day to sun himself. There were other, shyer turtles who plopped in when I walked by the bog, but this saucer-sized cutie posed as long as I wanted to take pictures.

A gorgeous painted turtle gets some sun while it sheds scutes as it grows. I think it's a female based on size and the shape of the carapace - females get bigger and the edges of their shells get fluted with age. I spent quite a bit of time getting close to her basking spot without disturbing her and then filmed and got stills while she relaxed. The joys of the backwater.
