Female Box Turtle. NE Arkansas.
Grassy field/marsh area.
She was headed in the direction of a pond and if you view "Original", you can see that she had just finished a snack of some sort. Most likely a nice big fat juicy slug by the looks of it.
Box turtles are the only turtle that has a hinge on the bottom of their shell so they can close themselves completely up.
Males usually have red eyes while the females have yellowish-brown eyes.
(That's how I knew she was a girl)
Turtle seen at Loro Parque in Tenerife ... had a fabulous day out there and impressed that my Fujifilm X100S managed to capture so much.
I was out for a walk in Lambton Woods and I heard a woman scream...
I ran up and the woman pointed to this snapping turtle crossing the walking path which she almost stepped on.
This guy was quite large and was crawling out of the woods back down to the river. Nothing could stop him! It was very to cool to watch him crawl over logs and plow through shrubs and tumble down some stairs. Those claws!
Notice the dog trying to sneak up on him (he was off the leash and was asking to get bit!).
Saw this little guy while swimming off the island of Anguilla. I followed him around for a while He soon lost patients with me and split for deeper waters.

When your small and something big comes along, you hide.
turtles seem easier to care for than other pets, they require lots of time and money. www.pinterest.com/pin/531565562241139131/
Glyptemys insculpta
April, 2012. Northern Michigan.
A beautiful and large adult female found in a shallow rocky creek which feeds into a larger river in northern Michigan. This is the second Wood Turtle I've seen in the past two days utilizing this small creek adjacent to the larger river.

Bog turtles are darkly colored with a bright yellow, orange or red blotch on each side of the head.
Sea turtles are almost always submerged in water, and, therefore, have developed an anaerobic system of respiration. Although all sea turtles breathe air, under dire circumstances they may divert to anaerobic respiration for long periods of time. When surfacing to breathe, a sea turtle can quickly refill its lungs with a single explosive exhalation and rapid inhalation. Their large lungs have adapted to permit rapid exchange of oxygen and to avoid trapping gases during deep dives. However, turtles must emerge while breeding, given the extra level of activity.
