Eng; Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park.

Now you say it ;-)

One of the stone monsters that makes up Monument Valley, or Tse’Bii’Ndzisgaii, valley of rocks. This formation is called "Stagecoach" presumably as a tribute to John Ford, though I suspect there is a Diné (Navajo) name for it- if anyone knows it please share.

Navajo tradition describes the Diné (the people) arriving at this, the fourth world, which despite its abundance of game and the presence of corn, was also inhabited by terrible monsters. These monsters were neutralized when Spider Woman passed on the magic needed to turn the monsters into stone to The Twins, who were 2nd generation peoples of the fourth world. The buttes of Monument Valley are the remnants of these monsters.

Visiting Monument Valley, an area of freestanding sandstone rock that straddles the borders of northeastern Arizona and southeastern Utah, is truly an out-of-this-world experience. According to NASA, created during the Permian period, the Valley once formed part of a seafloor where sediments and sandstone piled up in layers for millions of years. Tectonic forces raised the slab above the water line and created a plateau. Then water and wind chipped away at the sedimentary rock and removed the softer materials, eventually resulting in the towering structures that we see today. The area is now home to the Navajo Nation, and is called Tsé Bii’ Ndzisgaii (Valley of the Rocks) by the Navajo.

The morning sun graces three frequently photographed buttes of Tsé Biiʼ Ndzisgaii

(Valley of Rocks/ Monument Valley). Although clear skies had been forecast for this morning we were fortunate to have some scattered clouds to provide some color and texture to the sunrise sky. As always there was a crowd gathered at “Forrest Gump Hill” (now on Google maps). It amazes me no one has been hit there, but of course you can see cars coming from a long way away.

Wishing everyone wonderful holidays- Good light to all!

The faded light of the setting sun from the left, and the warm light of the full moon rising, create unique lighting for this rugged landscape.

Like the giant skeletal spine of an ancient dragon, the upheaval of a thin lava wall forms a fin like structure that stretches for miles away from Shiprock -- a sacred rock formation to the Navajo people.

The stars above appear to be influenced by this otherworldly formation as they streak upward following the contour of the earth.

Tsé Biiʼ Nidzisgaii is theMonument Valley.

Literally, the word translates to rock(s)—within—white-streaks-around, or thereabout. Colloquially, it’s “the streaks that go around in the rocks.” You’ll notice these streaks as the various rock layers in the Valley.

There are similar places described by the “streaks” in the rocks in Navajo, most notably the Grand Canyon.

After a couple weeks of mostly Yosemite I'm back to going through my photos from the southwest in April. Most of my favorites are from Antelope Canyon so bear with me.

Tse Bighanilini is the Navajo name for Upper Antelope Canyon, the most frequently photographed of the two Antelope Canyons (and probably in the world). It seemed that no matter where you looked it was photo worthy, even though it's really all been done before.

The protruding rock formation is what caught my eye here, and the background rock frames it nicely. The dynamic range was problematic in the canyon primarily when shooting up towards daylight, where you have dark shadow at the bottom and blown out light at the top. But, the underlying shot here (it's a combination of 3 exposures) was a little unusual in that it was somewhat flat and low-contrast through most of the shot, but blown out at the top.

To achieve some greater contrast I blended a marginally darker exposure into the darker areas effectively boosting the contrast a little with a B&W layer mask (not unlike doing a curves adjustment), and then blended in some of the darkest exposure around the top (with another B&W layer mask), this time to recover some of the highlights. The end result was like a really complicated and time-consuming way of doing a basic curves adjustment - I guess you learn through trial and error.

As I've said before, if you find yourself int he American Southwest with a camera you owe it to yourself to take a tour here, even if it has all been done before. It's really gorgeous was actually just a lot of fun too.

Tse'Bii'Ndzisgaii is Navajo for Monument Valley

The Navajos call this sacred rock, Tsé Bitʼaʼí, which means, Winged Rock. On maps it is identified as, Shiprock. Whatever you may call this 30 million year-old volcanic plug soaring into the sky, it is a special place - an icon of the Navajo Nation and of the Four Corners Region of New Mexico.

When the sun is completely blocked by the moon, the total solar eclipse occurs, a layer of white gauze will wrap around the black sun.

If you look closely in a telescope, you can even see its textures as delicate as silk, extending from the edge of the black sun till somewhere times beyond the diameter of the sun.

This layer of gauze is the sun's upper atmosphere, the solar corona. Only when the total solar eclipse occurs, it has the chance to be seen by our naked eyes.

Enjoying the user experience of this lens with the T/S functionality. Still getting used to it and loving the results. One thing to remind myself is not to go crazy on the T/S functionality, it can be overdone. Using this lens at 0/0 setting provides very good imagery, sharp! The 45mm focal length offers a great perspective.

Tsé Biiʼ Ndzisgaii means 'valley of the rocks' in the Navajo language. This view may be familiar to those fans of Old West movies directed by John Huston.
