Weird camera distortion that I left as is.

The possibly 19th or even 18th century wooden frame around the big mirror in the Ted Turner Suite at Sierra Grande Lodge is a artful masterpiece in and of itself.

The Sierra County Courthouse was built with WPA labor in 1939 (the same year in which The Wizard of Oz was released).

The long and strange name of the county seat comes from the name of the popular radio game show called Truth or Consequences hosted by Ralph Edwards. Edwards promised that he would come to the first town in the country that would change its name in honor of his show. So in the year 1950, this town changed its name, and Edwards came to here every first weekend in May for the next fifty years at which time a community celebration would occur. The town's original name was Hot Springs. So this courthouse was built back when the town was called Hot Springs.

I was really amazed to see how hot the Mercedes heat exchanger was

getting from my trip today. At one point while driving around

Albuquerque I measured this temperature of 171.5. This is just before

the heated filter which ties into the cars injection pump.

The town "won" it's name on a gameshow

Boris Deutsch (1892-1978) was a modernist painter, a muralist, and a co-founder of the California Cubist style. Born in Krasnagorka, Lithuania in 1892, he studied art in Latvia and Berlin. At age 24 he immigrated to Seattle and in 1919 settled in Los Angeles, where he lived until his death at age 86. Deutsch worked for Paramount Pictures during the 1920s, creating and designing movie sets. He taught painting at the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles, and in the early 1930s, he was associated with the Federal Resettlement Project, sketching workers as they resettled onto farms.

Deutsch also received several WPA mural commissions, including one in New Mexico, one in Reedley, California, and one for eleven murals in the Los Angeles Terminal Annex Post Office.

He continued drawing, painting, and printmaking for decades. His work is held in the Carnegie Institute, National Museum of American Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Skirball Museum, Pomona College Museum of Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and San Diego Museum of Art.

The waters of the spa are supposed to be full of beneficial mineral content; healthy salts and the like.

Today Joey and I rode our bikes back to palomas gap to further explore some mines. Yesterday we entered some mines, but today was more espectacular.

This is a 40' long gate used for large shipments into the Green Acre

Hotel. The part of the gate that opens is 16' wide and there are two

side wings that connect to a papercrete fence. The structures is made

from rebar, welded wire mesh, and lath. The lath of the gate wings

will be coated in a papercrete mix of one part paper, one part lime,

and one part prickly pear. The inside of the gate wings will remain

hollow. This gate is scheduled to be completed before labor day

weekend 2007.

I think they were standing there for their value to tourism rather than being old world relics, but they make for a great shot!
