This elephant got his trunk caught in some sort of snare or trap, so, while he could still feed himself, he seemed to be an outcast from all the other elephants.
An old mooring bollard or post, that according to the adjacent edgestone is at least 100 years old. The wear of the ropes from the canal boats, has transformed this wooden trunk into a thing of beauty. Each twist, split, crack and distortion bears witness to its past, and it is still in use today! Just look at how the ropes have undercut the post.
