Holiday cactus, (Schlumbergera truncata; S. bridgesii; S. russelliana) also known as Christmas cactus or Thanksgiving cactus are often given as gifts for the holidays and received while blooming. There are over 200 hybrids available which result from cross breeding different species. They are native to a mountainous region in Brazil, just north of Rio de Janeiro and are true cacti even though they lack the familiar spines. The stems of this plant are flat and jointed with deeply toothed margins that resemble leaves. Holiday cacti are shade loving plants that flower for 4 - 6 weeks starting around mid-November. Many hybrids are in bloom for Thanksgiving.
"Haworthia maughanii x truncata: A unique plant with thick leaves that look like jelly candies. This variety protects itself from drought and browsing animals by retreating underground. In order to get enough light to survive, its leaves are topped with translucent "windows" that allow sunlight to irradiate the leaf interior. The leaves have are a blue-green tone while the tops have a frosty, veined look. This variety is endangered in its native habitats in South Africa due to poaching."

19/09/2022: 15W actinic trap; Llangennith, Gower, S Wales.
We’re having a week away on the Gower peninsula, somewhere neither of us had visited before, staying in a rental cottage with an extensive garden, so it would have seemed rude not to bring along a moth trap. We arrived on Saturday, but last night was the first with reasonably overcast conditions. While Large Ranunculus was new to me, I’m also including a few images of other species trapped in the garden here. At this time of year care has to be taken to distinguish between the Common Marbled Carpet and the closely-related Dark Marbled Carpet; this morning five turned up – all Common Marbleds, and all different in appearance – but only this one could be persuaded to sit for a photograph.

Family:Orchidaceae
Synonym:Myrmechila truncata
Terrestrial orchid.Sepals tipped with yellow clubs at the apex.Lip with a shiny black callus on the centre .
Endemic to south-east Queensland.
Native, warm-season annual or short-lived perennial, erect, hairless, tufted C4 grass usually less than 50 cm tall and forming a dense low crown; sometimes short stolons are present. Stems are unbranched and flattened with a knee-like bend near their base. Flowerheads are digitate, usually with 6-9 branches 4-20 cm long. Mostly found along roadsides and in native pastures where groundcover and fertility are relatively low; rarely abundant. Readily colonises bare ground and areas subject to compaction or shallow soils. Native biodiversity. Of little significance for grazing, it has low to moderate quality and low productivity. Tolerant of set stocking and close grazing, it is better suited to sheep than cattle due to the low height of its foliage. Favoured by grazing systems that maintain low groundcover. It has little response to fertiliser inputs.

Nome popular: Flor-de-maio; Flor-de-seda
Nome científico: Schumbergera truncata (Haw.)
Família: Cactaceae.
Origem: Brasil.
