This Troublemaker was caught in the act of pulling out flowers from the Barrel Cactus at "The Huntington" San Marino CA. He or she quickly clambered down from the cactus and sat in the shade enjoying the meal ! Ah well, I guess there are worse things to eat (e.g. beautiful flowers) ! So, perhaps, not so much of a troublemaker.

Today, a total change of topic. A moment of rest from the city, streets and the benefits of civilization.

I posted an image of a squirrel pulling out flowers from a barrel cactus a while back. This time a different squirrel climbed up onto this Aloe (I believe) and went from one group of blossoms to another burying its face into them to suck out the nectar - its face was sticky by the time it finished !

So, this is the second TROUBLEMAKER I've come across destroying the Desert Garden at "The Huntington". Of course, these foods taste great, so how can I blame them for just eating LOL !

You have to admire the relentless inquisitiveness of these birds, always on the go and pushing the limits with other species. They do seem to have a great social system and work together to cause maximum mischief.

Lab research shows they can interpret human communicative gestures to find hidden food, such as when a human gazes at food or points to it. They are also the only non-primates known to communicate with each other using their eyes (if you believe Wikipedia!).
