A bit of shadow play with a garden hedge trimmer... It's an image that's been in my "ready-to-post" folder for a long while now, and I'm getting tired of looking at it there, so today is the day. 😋
Even when I know there is a bear in the area, there is always a shot of adrenalin when I spot one. This is another one of those gravel road encounters where a bear heard me approaching (in a vehicle) and popped her head up over the bank to see what was going on.
Well, I'll tell you what is going on big old grizzly bear, it's the wildlife paparazzi and I just got my photo!
Taken for the “Macro Mondays” theme “Ready for the Day”. HMM!
I did add the glow and inverted the image in photoshop. If that's an issue I will take it out of the group. It needed a little something extra.
If you think mowing your lawn is hard work, then take a good look at what farmers high up in the mountains have to do ... There's a special mower for the 'normal' slopes, but when it gets really steep, you take the grass trimmer in your hands to mow the lot!
And if you'd like to know how much more he's got to do: in my previous photo 'Nearly Back ...' you can see this meadow and the mower above the village, to the left.

This flowering mountain lilac makes a quick screen, or hedge, is very garden tolerant, drought resistant, and shearable with a hedge trimmer if you are so inclined. One of the best hedge plants around, and makes a wonderful bird garden!

This young field maple is shooting upwards after seeding in a hedgerow. I hope that it makes it big and tough enough that this year the autumn hedge trimmers leave it alone ....
Great Egret in full breeding plumage/colors. Breaking off small branches for the nest. Delivering them to the island one by one and doing this over and over again for hours at a time. Real commitment.

"feeling the heat", rut is time to establish dominance and communicating such threw spreading scent...
As a yard trimmer with SOO 4448 in the lead waits on standby, CP 475 comes up the side with UP 6310 (SP Patch) on the point, coming into the Nahant Yard to start working.
Sometime a few decades ago, it might've been a rather normal sight to see SOO and Southern Pacific in the Nahant Yard, especially with the SP detours on the river line.
Definitely the money shot of the chase!

The deer keep the invasives in check, and the rabbits trim the edges of the lawn. This one was fully aware of my presence and didn't seem that bothered by it. Eastern Cottontail.
A few yard trimmers work the east bowl at the Belt Railway of Chicago's Clearing Yard, while a hump set works a cut in the far background.
Unfortunately, the weather was garbage for much of this trip, but it was still fun to visit a bunch of the vaunted Chicagoland hot spots.
Dr. Trimmer, an esteemed early physician, served as the mayor of Pacific Grove for an impressive span of 20 years. Notably, the town's initial telephone services were established in connection with his residence and the local pharmacy. Originally attributed to O.S. Trimmer, with Mrs. R.A. Trimmer assuming ownership from 1891, this house stands as a remarkable exemplar of the Queen Anne architectural style. Its precise and graceful design renders it a crucial heritage to safeguard. This splendid abode is the closest Pacific Grove comes to emulating the grandeur of San Francisco's contemporaneous palatial structures. Emulating the aesthetic preferences prevalent in its neighboring northern regions, this meticulously preserved dwelling mirrors the fashionable domestic architecture prevalent in the 1880s, both in New England and along the western coast. While builders in the East gradually transitioned to simpler constructions during the 1880s, San Francisco clung to the elaborate intricacies of the Queen Anne style, and wherever it manifested, particularly with its signature turret towers, it symbolized opulent prosperity.
The TRRA trimmer job uses the Illinois Transfer as a lead to work the south end of Madison Yard to allow A&S 102's job a route to also yard their train. The Alton & Southern runs a couple of transfers a day from its Gateway Yard in East St. Louis up to the TRRA Madison Yard. Instead of the direct route up the Illinois Transfer main via Willows, a roundabout route is taken along the East St. Louis riverfront. Depending on congestion at "CP", the A&S can be routed to yard their train to the north or in the fashion shown here by circling back around off the Wiggins to the Eads main before shoving into the receiving yard.
"UP" 2205 and "UP" 2204 are in Alton & Southern colors but can be elusive as the roam freely around Gateway Yard and are often seen running up the UP to Bloomington, IL.

I don't subscribe to the perfect lawn idea, as long as it is green and not prickly I leave it be.

Been doing the Shelter in Place thing. I read something the other day that said "February had 29 days, (leap year) March 300 days and April has been 5 years long.
Anyway, one of the big Douglas firs in the neighborhood died last winter and the tree people took it out today so I had more than enough to keep me entertained.
He had to climb this tree to the top the first time through the branches to put his rigging up. This pink rope hangs from it and allows them to guide sawed off branches to a safe place on the ground.
Then he went up this tree taking out the branches as you see all the way up to about an 8" top. Then he climbed the tree next to it to hang his rigging off it, came back to this tree and cut the top out of it and then cut it down about 3' at a time all the way to the ground. I can imagine that he'll sleep well tonight.
When he got the first couple of 3 foot chunks cut out of the trunk he pulled his 36" Stihl up which would have been a days work for me by itself.
Trisha using my Panasonic lumix camera to take photos of me on the roof with our bosch hedge trimmer.
I spotted this tree trimmer while walking through Duke Gardens. At the time he as just starting to trim the tree, so I took a few shots, but decided to come back later. I wanted to get just the tree trimmer and the tree trunk.
.
After shooting flowers for about twenty minutes, I wandered back over to the tree trimmer. He was just starting to section off the trunk, so I took a bunch of shots. This one with a section just starting to fall was my favorite.
.
I re-edited the image this morning.
.
Cheers,
Wade
