It's Halloween weekend and my minifigures are going to be wired on sugar and chocolate :-) I hope everyone has a Happy and safe Halloween :-)
I heard a knock on my bedroom door this afternoon and look who I found when I opened it!
The cutest bunch of trick-or-treaters ever!! ^___^
Trick or Treat - European Garden Spider nails a yellowjacket in her web outside my window. This particular spider showed amazing proficiency and caught 4 yellowjackets in about 45 minutes. For some reason after one was caught and wrapped the others would investigate as if to try to help or attack the spider but get caught and meet the same fate. A fifth wasp tried the same but managed to escape after getting briefly tangled.
These spiders are also known as "Pumpkin Spiders" and are a lot of fun to observe. It's great having a lens that doubles as a near macro lens - makes some fun shots possible when I'm busy at home and can't get out. Wishing a safe and happy halloween to all and hope you enjoy many treats like this spider did!

For many of years my feet have taken me on adventures and journeys. I've skipped enthusiastically to places and events that seemed fun and exciting; shuffled and dragged them to places I truly would have rather not been.
From my first pair of shoes, to the shoes I favour now, and to the shoes I will favour in the years to come; they are constant in my journey and will continue to take me where I need or want to be.
A big thanks to my Mom for dragging these shoes out of her memory box late last night so I could shoot this today.

This young woman was handing out leaflets of some kind outside the entrance to the 72nd St. subway station, on the north side of Broadway & 72nd St.
It's common to see people handing out leaflets, asking people to sign petitions for political candidates, and soliciting contributions for various worthy causes. But they're not usually dressed in this kind of outfit, and they tend to look a lot more serious and concerned.
At first, I thought she was handing out flyers advertising a local bar, a strip club, or perhaps an off-Broadway musical of some kind. But if you look closely at the small part of the flyer that's visible, it seems to be the same "parking" advertisement being handed out by the young man a block away -- on the corner of 73rd and Broadway...
Two days later, this sweet (naughty chick) young thing was replaced by a clean-cut young man, standing in approximately the same position, handling out the same damn flyer. See this picture for details... (And roughly a week later, she was handing out the same flyer at the north entrance of the same subway stop; see this picture for details.)
Note: this photo was published in a May 16, 2009 blog titled "I'm trying a thing...."
Note: on Aug 8, 2009 I uploaded a slightly-edited version of this photo. No big changes, just eliminated the "hot spots" and "cold spots" so that colors would be more evenly balanced.
Moving into 2010, the photo was published as an illustration in an undated (Jan 2010) blog titled "Seventieth Street Playground in New York County, NY." It was also published in an undated (Mar 2010) Wordnik blog, on the page titled "Naughty." And it was published in a Jul 14, 2010 blog titled "WearableWednesday: Fresh Summer Style Pt 1."
Moving into 2012, the photo was published in an Aug 3, 2012 blog titled "How To Attract Men - How To Attract a Man - How To Attract a Guy."

This is part of an evolving photo-project, which will probably continue throughout the summer of 2008, and perhaps beyond: a random collection of "interesting" people in a broad stretch of the Upper West Side of Manhattan -- between 72nd Street and 104th Street, especially along Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue.
I don't like to intrude on people's privacy, so I normally use a telephoto lens in order to photograph them while they're still 50-100 feet away from me; but that means I have to continue focusing my attention on the people and activities half a block away, rather than on what's right in front of me.
I've also learned that, in many cases, the opportunities for an interesting picture are very fleeting -- literally a matter of a couple of seconds, before the person(s) in question move on, turn away, or stop doing whatever was interesting. So I've learned to keep the camera switched on (which contradicts my traditional urge to conserve battery power), and not worry so much about zooming in for a perfectly-framed picture ... after all, once the digital image is uploaded to my computer, it's pretty trivial to crop out the parts unrelated to the main subject.
For the most part, I've deliberately avoided photographing bums, drunks, homeless people, and crazy people. There are a few of them around, and they would certainly create some dramatic pictures; but they generally don't want to be photographed, and I don't want to feel like I'm taking advantage of them. I'm still looking for opportunities to take some "sympathetic" pictures of such people, which might inspire others to reach out and help them. We'll see how it goes ...
The only other thing I've noticed, thus far, is that while there are lots of interesting people to photograph, there are far, far, far more people who are not so interesting. They're probably fine people, and they might even be more interesting than the ones I've photographed ... but there was just nothing memorable about them.

We're back from nine days in New Orleans, where Mrs. Orca had some work and I tagged along for fun. Day or night, it's a great city with interesting sights everywhere you look. Garden District, New Orleans, Louisiana.
I went out to get in my car to go to work and noticed the moon was just above this telephone pole. It struck me as looking like some magician's trick with a glowing ball sitting on a string, and rolling along it. I bet that trick has a name. But no tricks with my photography.
Both. Both is good.
Don't worry, the spider's fake. Do you think I'd let a real spider near my Trader Joe's gummies?

At a stop sign we noticed trick or treaters outside. I was so stoked! Brian rolled down the window and since Paula had brought a bag of candy, we had some to give to them.
