A shot from underneath the cherry tree, capturing the branch of blossom with a background of more blossom.
I tried to keep the field of focus low to have a foreground and a background instead of just a lot of foreground blossom.
The only thing that could make our local Great Horned owlets (Bubo virginianus) even cuter is sunset-backlighting! They are still hanging out in the park, flying between the iconic Southern California palm trees, capturing the hearts of passers-by, one by one :-)
This week’s assignment was about the effects of COLOR in a photograph…or the absence of color as in a Black and White photo. I submitted both styles but prefer the B/W photo as my personal favorite.
1. How fortunate were we to get that touch of snow on Wednesday! The grove of trees captured just the correct amount of it. I’m always amazed at the simple beauty of the “Chaotic mess of Nature”. There are dominating subjects, the bigger trees and then the twiggy undergrowth. Neat to view in a snapshot but not very inviting to wander through. Pattern, balance, Shape, Line…it covers the list.
2. Trees rarely grow straight and I really like the visual oddity in the center of this shot. You can almost tell it’s a survivor. It is visually dominant and yet lends balance in its asymmetry. If you ever get lost in the woods, look for this tree to help you mark your way! The shadows and silvery dark bark lend to the value and texture. If you focus your attention to the trees in front, it almost projects a 3D effect.
3. Snow is a wonderful way to illuminate the shot however, if the settings aren’t correct, you get a big white photo (my first three frames)! With some adjustments, there really wasn’t too much to worry about. There was a small amount of sunlight but not so much that I caught a glare. The direction was from the left side of the photo…easier to say than figure out N,S,E,W!
4. Technically refining the image wasn’t too difficult. If you do the initial work in the field, the work at the editing desk is fairly simple. I chose to transfer this image to a black and white, which isn’t too far from the original. Black & White draws your focus to the images whereas in the color version, copper tones of the bark and the green of the moss were a bit distracting. In looking back at my setting, I chose the landscape setting on my camera in a continuous shoot mode. This, unfortunately, gives my camera the power to make all the critical decisions for the settings. It went with an ISO80, F5.0, AWB, 1/200 and whole frame evaluation. I chose to have no flash, something I think is preferred, natural lighting vs. unnatural or assisted lighting. Sometimes it’s good but for the most part, it tends to have scary qualities.
5. I’m sure that looking at this you’re probably thinking, “big deal, a bunch of trees” but I guess it is definitely a personal preference. It’s comforting to think that it an urban area, this type of scene is available. It provides a sound buffer from the busy street on the opposite side, a place for wildlife to forage, and I’m looking forward to the appearance of green buds on the branches! I’m also hoping/ wishfully thinking that this is the last snow of the season (ever the optomist).

A young bald eagle lifts off from the water, clutching a fresh catch in its talons. Droplets scatter in the air as the powerful raptor gains altitude, backlit by the golden light filtering through the trees. Captured at Jordan Lake Dam in Moncure, North Carolina, this moment highlights the skill and precision of these majestic birds as they hunt along the river.
Wish I could have included some of the background nature, but as the drop was hanging right below the ceiling, I couldn't reach up high enough..
Wisps of white thread through a quiet forest, clinging to the trunks and weaving into the undergrowth like a memory caught in the trees. Captured in Algonquin Park by Duncan Rawlinson, this image reflects the still, transitional energy of late autumn—when the leaves have fallen, but the hush of winter hasn't yet arrived. A subtle tension lingers, wrapped in soft light and tangled forms.

I enjoy to climb trees and this tree captured my eye today so i decided to climb it and pick an apple. I really enjoy the colour of the leafs and the bit of blue sky peeking through.
Johann Christoph Friedrich von Schiller was a German playwright, poet, philosopher and historian. Schiller is considered by most Germans to be Germany's most important classical playwright.
He was born in Marbach to a devoutly Protestant family. Initially intended for the priesthood, in 1773 he entered a military academy in Stuttgart and ended up studying medicine. His first play, The Robbers, was written at this time and proved very successful. After a brief stint as a regimental doctor, he left Stuttgart and eventually wound up in Weimar. In 1789, he became professor of History and Philosophy at Jena, where he wrote historical works.
During the last seventeen years of his life (1788–1805), Schiller developed a productive, if complicated, friendship with the already famous and influential Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. They frequently discussed issues concerning aesthetics, and Schiller encouraged Goethe to finish works that he had left as sketches. This relationship and these discussions led to a period now referred to as Weimar Classicism. Together they founded the Weimar Theater.
They also worked together on Xenien, a collection of short satirical poems in which both Schiller and Goethe challenge opponents of their philosophical vision.
History of Schillerpark
Schillerpark, a beloved green oasis in the heart of Klagenfurt am Wörthersee, has a rich history that dates back to the 19th century. Its origins can be traced to 1864 when the Klagenfurt City Council decided to create a new public park in the city center. The land chosen for this project was a former military training ground, which presented a unique opportunity to transform a barren space into a vibrant urban green space.
The park was designed by the renowned landscape architect, Rudolph Siebeck, who envisioned a picturesque and welcoming retreat for the citizens of Klagenfurt. Siebeck's design incorporated elements of the English landscape garden style, characterized by its natural, flowing forms and harmonious integration with the surrounding urban landscape.
The park was officially opened to the public in 1868 and quickly became a popular destination for locals and visitors alike. Its central location within the city walls and its serene ambiance made it an ideal venue for strolls, picnics, and social gatherings. Over the years, Schillerpark has undergone several renovations and expansions, but it has retained its original charm and continues to play a vital role in the urban fabric of Klagenfurt.
Anecdote:
In the early 1900s, Schillerpark was a favorite haunt of the Austrian poet Rainer Maria Rilke. Rilke, who spent several years living in Klagenfurt, often sought inspiration for his writing in the tranquil surroundings of the park. It is said that he would spend hours wandering through the park's gardens, contemplating the beauty of nature and finding solace in its peaceful atmosphere.
Layout and Design
Schillerpark's layout follows the principles of the English landscape garden, characterized by its naturalistic style and integration with the surrounding landscape. The park's design blends harmoniously with the natural contours of the terrain, creating a sense of tranquility and immersion in nature.
Notable features include the park's meandering pathways that invite visitors to explore its hidden corners, the picturesque gardens with vibrant flower beds, and the elegant monuments that pay homage to notable figures and events.
The architectural styles reflected in the park's design range from classical to modern, with structures such as the Schiller Monument, the Rose Garden Pavilion, and the Dragon Fountain showcasing different periods and influences.
An interesting design element in Schillerpark is the "Alpengarten," an alpine garden that features a diverse collection of plants native to the Alps. Visitors can admire the colorful blooms of rhododendrons, gentians, and edelweiss, while learning about the unique adaptations of these plants to the harsh mountain environment.
Gardens and Greenery
Schillerpark is a haven for nature lovers, boasting a diverse array of gardens and green spaces that showcase the beauty of the natural world. Stroll through the meticulously manicured Rose Garden, where vibrant blooms in every shade of pink, red, and yellow fill the air with their sweet fragrance. Relax in the tranquil Japanese Garden, where carefully arranged rocks, serene water features, and delicate cherry blossoms create a peaceful ambiance. Admire the colorful displays in the Perennial Garden, where a kaleidoscope of flowers changes with the seasons.
Beyond the formal gardens, Schillerpark is home to sprawling meadows, towering trees, and winding paths that invite visitors to explore the park's natural beauty. Discover a hidden grove of ancient oaks, where sunlight filters through the canopy, creating a magical atmosphere. Take a break under a majestic weeping willow tree, its long, flowing branches providing a shady retreat on a hot summer day. Spot the variety of bird species that call the park home, from chirping sparrows to majestic swans gliding across the pond.
The park's green spaces play a crucial role in promoting biodiversity and sustainability. Native plants and trees provide food and shelter for local wildlife, creating a diverse ecosystem that supports a wide range of species. The park's commitment to sustainable practices, such as organic gardening and water conservation, ensures that its natural beauty can be enjoyed for generations to come.
Practical Tip: Enhance your visit by downloading a plant identification app on your smartphone. As you explore the park's gardens, use the app to identify and learn about the diverse species of flowers, plants, and trees. Cistern
Pooh is sitting on top of TreePeople's 216,000 gallon cistern, an underground tank that collects, filters, and stores rainwater to irrigate the landscape in their public park. The cistern mimics the natural processes of a forest, where trees capture, cleanse, and hold water before releasing it into the soil. This cistern is very important as in Los Angeles, less than half an inch of rain can result in almost 4 billion gallons of runoff dumping into the Pacific Ocean. Capturing and utilizing rainwater more effectively would reduce the city's need to import water from northern California, the Colorado River, and other sources; saving money and lessening the damage done to ecosystems at those sources.

You've seen Snakes on a Plane so here are Goats in a Tree.
Captured just outside Agadir, these goats had climbed the tree to get at the best leaves to eat.
I was very pleased to find this beautiful field, and to be there as a heavy shower passed to leave soft, clear light. There is a hint of autumn creeping into the distant trees. Captured near Ditchley, Oxfordshire.
