I chose this autumn tree photographed at Summerland Ornamental Gardens in Summerland, BC to honour National Tree Day!

This year marks Canada’s second ever National Tree Day, celebrated on the Wednesday of National Forest Week (September 23 to 29). This special day is a celebration for all Canadians to appreciate the great benefits that trees provide us—clean air, wildlife habitat, energy and a connection with nature. Not to mention how immensely important they are for the climate. On average, 98 trees capture and store one tonne of airborne carbon dioxide every year. And with over 80 per cent of Canadians living in urban areas, it’s so important to keep our city centres green. Did you know that each healthy tree can reduce airborne dust by as much as 7,000 particles per litre of air? A healthy tree is a free-standing air conditioner and purifier!

I'm heading out for the last camping trip of the season and to hug a few trees :) I'll catch up with everyone soon.

A sunburst on an otherwise blah fall day. Back lit through the trees. Captured it with f/22 to enhance the sun.

Wet Spot On My Shoes -

We know trees drink with roots and water travels upwards to nourish the other parts. While excess water transpires slowly through the leaves, be aware on special circumstances Adam’s ale can drain without warning. I was leaning against a tree and whistling a tune (Kermit’s “Rainbow Connection” if you’ll like to know) when it happened. Young trees are not so efficient when it comes to controlling water loss, he thought no one was looking and did the most natural thing. I grab my chance for a candid shot and had a peeing tree captured, for the first time on digital camera. There’s nothing obscene with a sapling doing his private business in his own backyard, isn’t it?

The sun slowly sinks into the sea, filtering its last warmth through the tangled arms of pine trees. Captured at Hamdeok, Jeju — where silhouettes and silence tell the story of evening.

Smithers Airport, Smithers, BC.

This bear was captured by local conservation officers in the Fall of 2001. It is believed that this bear was responsible for killing upwards of 30 head of cattle in the Hungry Hill area, which is between Smithers and Houston. The killing of cattle, which occurred in calving areas as well as grazing areas, took place over a three-year period.

Some of the cows killed weighed as much as 1500 lbs. (682 kg). Conservation officers responded to the kills and set snares and traps, but the bear managed to avoid capture for more than three years. He was able to trigger snares and grab the cow carcass without being caught on more than one occasion.

In October 2001, after a rash of new kills, officers were finally successful in capturing the bear in a cable leghold snare. The snare, consisting of a spring-loaded cable anchored to a tree, captured the bear by the leg.

As the two officers, Kevin Nixon and Brad Lacey, approached the area cautiously, the bear managed to break the snare cable and charge the officers. The bear was 24 metres from the officers when the snare broke and made it to within 7 metres of them before being shot.

Although everyone involved knew there was a large bear responsible for the predation of the cattle, the size of the bear certainly surprised everyone. This male Grizzly Bear weighed 1012 lbs. (460 kg) and appeared healthy.

It is suspected that he was able to break the snare cable due to the fact that he had weakened it with his teeth.

I have also heard this bear might be the offspring of the Grizzly Bear that is on display at Houston Travel Info Centre.

This tree captured my eyes while driving to Oman.

My favourite tree in Norwich, in the churchyard of St Peter Mancroft. I have yet to do justice to the way this tree captures the light, the luminosity is amazing. Until I get it right, this will have to do!

Woodfield Lane, home to Ashtead Cricket Club. The backdrop from this angle, looking south to the north, is the only part of the ground lacking mature trees. Captured during the early stages of a Surrey Championship fixture with Premier Division rivals East Molesey, who are batting. The visitors won, by 86 runs, to record, at the third attempt, a maiden victory of the season. After two straight wins, leaders Ashtead were beaten for the first time in three.

Ashtead let the opposition off the hook. East Molesey began well enough, with opener Sam Burge hitting 61 off 74 balls. But, when a devastating second spell from professional Simon Keene (4-49 from 10 overs), a New Zealander, garnered three wickets, including two in his first over back, at 164-6, they were in a bit of a pickle. Pakistani professional Hussain Tallat (31 off 32), in at four, threw away his wicket, with a terrible shot. Coming to the rescue, however, No 7 batsman and Moles director of cricket James Southgate (68 not out off 64), a player with lots of experience as an opener, put on 53, for the seventh wicket, with No 8 Matt Tigg (22 off 38), then a further 53 with captain and wicketkeeper Nick Stevens (16 not out off 12), in an unbroken eighth wicket partnership. Some superb catching, mind, from the Ashtead fielders. Just one chance put down.

The surprising about-turn meant Ashtead faced a tougher run chase than had appeared likely. The hosts suffered a major setback when captain and Surrey strokemaker Ben Geddes, who had contributed a century in the previous Saturday's win at Guildford, was trapped leg before, for just 15, by Toby Porter (2-39 from seven). I overheard Geddes later voice disappointment with the decision because he felt he was well down the wicket. Rash shot selection, coupled with fine catching, saw Ashtead lose, in sliding to 124-7, Geddes's fellow opener Ragu Aravinthan for 34 (off 34), Ashley Naidoo for 27 (off 26) and 2023 Penzance professional Keene for 21 (off 31). None of the better home batsmen had built an innings. Really, the game was up. A tedious finale ensued, during which wicketkeeper Jevan Kher (32 off 73) and Tom Homes (22 off 38) added 56 for the eighth wicket. If nothing else, it secured Ashtead a couple of batting bonus points. Once Homes had been removed, however, the other two wickets went down in quick succession. Tigg took 3-23 from eight, Harry Porter (Toby's brother) 3-34 from nine.

I used a Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX30 for that image which just the auto-settings and held it still so that the water surface would just be in the middle of the lens.

This image to me exemplifies one of the most urgent problems of Alpine regions today. The use of the element water for hydropower. The picture was taken in a spring in the Swiss Alps. For me the blue colour captures the essence of the element water. The light green of the trees captures how the terrestrial 'dry world' only stands on a fundament of blue water. The mountain to the upper left is hardly to be seen but it stands for the where rain and snow touch the ground and start their run deep to -eventually- the ocean. From springs on its way deep water is liquid money, creating revenue as it flows through turbines. My work within the Research Centre for Sustainable Energy and Water Supply aims to find solutions for a sustainable development of hydropower.

Autumn trees at Thorp Perrow Arboretum

Part of the shot from my recent trip to Yosemite NP to hunt for the firefall. This shot is on my must do list because I skunked my first attempt few months ago for not carrying a tripod to make the shot.

Initially I discovered this spot while driving along Northside Drive to reach Valley View, the leading line of the dead tree captured me as it's pointing towards Sentinel Dome.

I felt like the tree is trying to say :"follow my lead, for you will find what you seek!"

17 October

Gold light filtering

Between white birches standing

Tall and resolute;

Shadows beneath pines

In a thick shroud of darkness,

Discomfort found here;

Cold frost creeps over

The hood of your faithful car,

Unwelcome seasons;

Gold light shines on us,

Stood together among trees:

Captured adventure.

Manistee adventure with this one today. Involved a long drive, good talks, gruesomely destroyed birds, antiques, Lake Michigan bluffs, birch trees, golden leaves, wind-tousled hair and our Martian friend Mark Watney. I'd say it was a day well spent.

As I was driving towards the Welcome centre of Monument Valley, I stopped the car on the road, lowered the windsheild and took this shot. Somehow, the lone tree captured my attention. The day was really bright.

A couple days off work and a very unusual warm end to September, it feels more like summer than autumn, but we will not be complaining! We went out looking for Autumn leaves and a lot of them are to be described as moth eaten, but autumn is still starting so hopefully they will produce more colour perfection over the next few weeks.

The Boston Ivy leaves are growing against a side wall of a shop, they lose their brilliance quite quickly once they drop or are picked so need to be used straight away. The colours remind me of a wedding, whites and pinks, lovely. Hung from a tree capturing the afternoon sunlight they show their wonderful delicate colours.
