BCC Treasure Hunt Theme 5 (February) Clashing Colours - To some these colour maybe perceived as clashing and there certainly was a time when you would never have worn orange with pink or 'blue and green should never be seen'. But who is to say these colours clash when they are present in nature and work beautifully together.

some sort of latte for the boy and an aeropress for me.

Last Sunday was a total bust at the flea market. We found nary a doll or scrap of clothes for them. In fact, the fountain drink machine was out of order at the gas station on the way home...so it was an extra sucky trip. But this weekend made up for it. It was drizzling in the early morning and there was a heat advisory in effect later that day. I didn't anticipate going to the flea market at all, since there likely wouldn't be many sellers set up. But when the sun poked through the clouds, that itch to go treasure hunting needed to be scratched. There weren't too many people set up, but sometimes all it takes is that one booth for you to get lucky at. A woman had a TON of boxed Barbies from the 90s to present day. The prices were odd. Some slim box dolls were $15, some grocery store type ones were $40. But the ones I wanted most were only $5!!! This early 2000s era of Kelly most tickles my fancy. It was the time when my sister gave me all her childhood dolls and I began buying them in stores. Many weekends, Dad would let me pick out a Kelly at KB Toys when we were out for pizza on Friday nights. They were just $5 back then, so I could usually canoodle Dad into purchasing me one. I loved their delicate, somewhat realistic facial features. These three girls are the types that I ogled in stores. I know for a fact I wanted Camper Marisa and Pool Party Deidre. I don't have a distinct recollection of Maria, but she's right up my alley. There were lots more Kelly dolls (some were bundled together by their lines in groups of four for $40). I handpicked the ones that I cared about the most. I don't carry a lot of cash with me at the flea market, so sometimes I have to use more discretion. There were plenty of dolls I would have gotten if the selection had been smaller. I actually was beside myself with choices. The Tommy fashion was under the table. It was next to a Barbie and Kelly set that was also in haggard packaging. This cost $3! We had it growing up, but Colleen lost the pants and I discolored the hat via improper laundering circa 2012. I have found duplicated pieces here and there used, but never those darn pants. I had to wash these garments though. The clothes inside were exposed to things because the box was torn open. It all felt powdery and grimy for some reason...yuck!

Oh yeah!

It's Friday!

And the love is everywhere!

People are smilin' at each other on the sidewalk.

Hugs are flyin' around everywhere back and forth.

The weather's been incredible.

Flowers are bloomin' all over the place!

The leaves are fillin' up the trees.

I'm going on a roadtrip.

A long and awesome roadtrip.

The kids wanna go camping.

There's a place down in Arkansas where you can find these giant crystals.

We'll spend the weekend there campin' and digging for the giant quartz crystals.

Then I think we'll stop in Hot Springs and grab a hotel and enjoy the hot springs there.

I love loungin' in the hot springs.

I've always been a big fan of 'lounging' and the hot springs make it so much better.

The next day the roadtrip' continues in the spirit of exploration and adventure we'll head south...

to New Orleans.

I got us a cush hotel room in a haunted old hotel...

with eighteen foot ceilings in the rooms...

you can totally get some wicked air jumpin' on the bed with a ceiling that high!

I think we'll stay there for the week.

We'll explore the French Quarter, the Warehouse District, the Garden District and I gotta stop in at Marie LaVeau's House of Voodoo to stock up on amulets, antidotes, voodoo love potions and stuff.

I am gonna be shootin' street something fierce from here all the way to the Gulf of Mexico.

Just gonna hit the Mississippi River, take a left and follow the Big Muddy south.

The kids wanna go on one of those airboats in the swamps too.

They wanna see the ocean.

They wanna catch an alligator.

No... they really wanna watch me catch an alligator.

They're always tryin' to get me to wrestle alligators.

Man it's gonna be a good time.

I'm lovin' life.

I could feel the love you know?

I love takin' the family on long roadtrips.

I downloaded all the 'Weird and Strange America' stuff on my GPS.

And since I'm a Dad we'll be stopping at every single historical marker on the way.

Where I will read it aloud and imagine how it was... and the kids will wonder what they've done to deserve it.

I've got every one of those historical markers stored in the TomTom GPS too.

Along with the Civil War Battlefields, famous plane crash sites, haunted places...

I got Roadtrip Bingo cards and everything.

I do just dig an awesome road trip.

I hope you got some good plans for the weekend.

I hope you're feelin' the Friday-Love mojo deep!

Springtime is here and it just adds to the love.

You know I'd take you with me if I could.

A roadtrip with the Viewminder is somethin' you'll either never forget or really wish you could.

You have the best weekend ever.

Feed your soul.

Get filled up with love.

Enjoy life with everything you got.

You deserve to feel the love!

Friday-Love!

You Tell 'Em Willie

Two days ago our Queen abdicated and her son was crowned King. A wonderful day filled with ceremony and celebration. These little guys were being handed out at the supermarket today (last week you got one when spending 15 euros,... Today they grabbed a handful and basically threw them at me ;-)

Greedy me was hoping the "Kelly Lady" would be back another weekend. I guess it was lucky for my wallet that she was not. I thought we were going home empty handed. The weather has officially turned cold and gloomy...which equates to less sellers at the flea market. But in one of the last aisles of the outside booths, I decided to check out a regular seller's dolls again. I recently found Happy Family Neighborhood Happy Birthday Midge at this table. I'm glad I checked because I found THE Iris Clops. She is the playline I Heart Fashion lady, released as a Toys 'R' Us exclusive. I almost got this doll brand new when she was in stores, after she got marked down to $11. But I was trying to curb my Monster High spending, so I rationalized that I didn't need her. What a mistake, especially since Mattel never issued another playline version of her. Sigh, and now the eBay prices are just plain stupid. I'm sorry, I'm not paying $40 for a nude doll with missing limbs. $1 on the other hand was reasonable. Iris was without a scrap of clothing, and was missing a hand. I was confident I had a green hand that I could use on her at home. You can see she's already wearing it in this photo--it's her left one, that is a slightly darker, less yellow shade of green.

Since we weren't having much luck outside, Colleen and I popped into the building before leaving. There has been quite a few changes inside lately...old sellers leaving and new ones setting up in their booths. But we actually struck luck at an older woman's booth this time. She's been setting up at the flea market for years. We used to buy a lot of her boxed dolls when she was set up outside with her grandson. She had quite a few new dollies on Sunday, that were $10 each (disregard the $25 on Ken...that's not what he cost). I'm not sure if she got some of the "Kelly Lady's" dolls, or if she found more out of date ones elsewhere. Some of the ones she had looked like "Kelly Lady's," but then again most of the Barbies at her booth were the usual suspects. Colleen was intrigued by Ken, and we both found Sydney Barbie marvelous. I love her Mackie head mold and her well crafted ensemble. She is supposed to bring more dolls in next week, so we'll see if we buy anymore!

In early October 2025, treasure hunters with the company 1715 Fleet–Queens Jewels, LLC, announced they had recovered over 1,000 gold and silver coins from a Spanish shipwreck off Florida's "Treasure Coast." The haul is estimated to be worth over $1 million. The artifacts were recovered from one of the ships of the 1715 Spanish Treasure Fleet, which was destroyed by a hurricane on July 31, 1715.

The recovered coins will undergo a conservation process before being displayed to the public. Under Florida law, the state can claim up to 20% of any recovered treasure for research and public exhibition. The remaining items are divided between the salvage company and its subcontractors.

The recovery was made near Ambersand Beach, north of Vero Beach, by a crew led by Captain Levin Shavers. The area is part of Florida's famed Treasure Coast, so named for the many artifacts from the 1715 fleet found there over the years.

Bracknell Camera Club Treasure Hunt Theme (June) - Toned - well I'm working on it. This was quite a challenge as I couldn't persuade anyone to model for me. I focussed on the wall in front of me and then just brought it back and flicked to manual mode. Ideally I had wanted an 'invisible black background' Glyn Dewis style and I guess I didn't do too badly since that wall is white. (ISO 100 F11 and 1/125 to keep in sync with my flashgun which was also in manual mode). I took multiple shots moving my off camera Speedlite around to attempt to mould some definition without my forearm becoming completely burn out. I'm very new to any form of studio photography and still have a lot to learn so this was a valuable exercise. The final photo had the flashgun coming in from the side at elbow level but glancing my back and I moved it further away to the side to avoid overly bright areas so hence the darker shadows. I should add that I now have over developed muscles in my left arm compared to my right. ;-)

Ancient Greek fired clay objects still showing traces of colour

Investigation of the surface of ancient sculpture shows that it was often painted in a variety of different colours. In the past some collectors, and even museum curators, preferred to show ancient stone statues as clean, white and pristine. Unfortunately, cleaning the statues removed important evidence. Traces of colour can still be seen on the winged cherub, two figurines of women wearing robes and a plaque showing the monster Medusa, which was used to decorate a building.

BCC Treasure Hunt Theme 10 (March) - Energy - I have long thought about whether there are other ways I can use sparklers in photos other than light painting. This evening I had another of those light bulb moments.

Christina created a fun treasure hunt for the young adult program and the two groups raced through the library following the trail and searching for their next clues.

Apart from Trail Camera photos, this was all I shot. We had our weekly roastie on Saturday, as I thought we were doing a family quiz tonight. Haven't heard anything yet though, and it's supposed to start in less than 2 hours!

BCC Treasure Hunt Theme 1 (January) Bend - it's science! Bending light.

BCC Treasure Hunt Theme 8 (February) Wires - from a very early age my Dad taught me the importance of wiring a plug correctly. Those were the days that when you purchased an electrical item you had to remember to purchase a plug as well. Imagine the frustration I suffered on Christmas Day when I was given a portable audio cassette player only to find it was minus a 13amp plug. Nowadays electrical items seem to be already wired up and ready for use. Thank you BCC Treasure Hunt - another new skill - colour popping, just to emphasis those coloured wires.

Roman currency bar ("aes signatum") with chicken design, early 3rd century BC

Cast copper alloy currency bar (aes signatum). Obverse - two chickens facing each other. Between them stars above and below.

Reverse - two tridents with two dolphins between.

From the Roman Republic, issuer anonymous; c. 280BC-250BC

Minted in Rome, Italy

The designs on this currency bar are thought to refer to naval battles of the First Punic War (264 BC-241 BC). The tridents and dolphins on the reverse symbolise the sea, and the two stars and chickens on the obverse are thought to refer to the function of Castor and Pollux as protectors of sailors (Crawford 1974, p.718, note 2)

We popped into the Salvation Army on Tuesday, because we were in the area running errands. I needed a tube of hair dye, and I figured I'd just get it in person rather than ordering it online. This Salvation Army is really small and the dolls are typically destroyed. So I wasn't expecting much. The dolls in the photo were mostly purchased as body donors. You can see why...the hair cuts are ABYSMAL!!! And of course the store wanted THREE dollars each for them. It doesn't take a doll collector to see that they have been butchered. The only two we saved were Kevin and Moonlight Magic Barbie. The rest have already been dismantled for future body donors. I did buy Moonlight Magic Barbie with the intent of using her for parts too. But I was also secretly intrigued by her jet black hair and vibrant red lipstick. Upon closer assessment, I noted her haircut wasn't that bad. She's missing a ton of length, but there were no portions that were chopped to the scalp (which you can see with the others). A boil wash really helped make the cut look factory (I also evened it out). I dressed her in a few clothing scraps that were floating around the nasty toy bins. She has 2014 Sparkling Princess Belle skirt layered over some Beverly Hills 90210 boy doll pants. There were actually a lot more mutilated 90s Barbies in stock. I would have bought them for body donors too...but $3 a piece adds up quickly. So I took the most unique/most useful bodies. Colleen was excited to get a Party 'N Play Skipper fashion (shown on Miss Babysitter). I was also grateful we'd found Pet Pals Courtney last year without cut hair at the local flea market. Colleen wanted her for years, and would have been devastated to find this Salvation Army one! Yes, I could re-root her, but that is very time consuming/costly (since I like to buy nice quality hair). The Coffin Bean stand was only $2. I can't believe this new item already found its way to a thrift store!
