The Grand Traverse Light, built in 1858, rises as a cupola from the top a the 2 1/2 story keepers house. Today the restored light is a museum and gift shop operated as part of a Michigan State Park. The house replicates a keeper's home from the 1920's and 30's. There is also a working fog signal building which is occasionally demonstrated.
The light is located on Cat's Head Point, Leelanau State Park, at the tip of Leelanau Peninsula, 9 miles north of Northport. This is a beautiful drive with views of Lake Michigan and turn-outs to several secluded beaches along the way.

The light is listed on both the National Register of Historic Places and the Michigan State Register of Historic Sites.
This is a traverse board, ca 1800-1825. The traverse board (called rekenaar in Dutch, and renard in French) was used in northern European countries from at least the early 16th century until the 19th. By inserting pegs for the ship's direction and speed (as determined by ship's compass and the log and log glass), each half-hour (or hour) of the watch, the mean course and distance sailed could be determined [Tesseract, Catalogue 67, Summer 2000, item 25]. This is in the collection at The Mariners' Museum in Newport News, VA (accession # 2000.32.01)
On my last day in Michigan, I wanted to see at least one of Michigan's lighthouses, so I drove up to Northpoint. After two days of mid-70 degree weather, a cold front came through, which brought in these heavy dark clouds and a cold wind. Originally built in 1850, the Grand Traverse Lighthouse is located at the tip of the Leelanau Peninsula in the State of Michigan and separates Lake Michigan and Grand Traverse Bay. It marks the Manitou passage, where Lake Michigan elides into Grand Traverse Bay
