I got the inspiration for this from case study 4 in Lighting for Product Photography. I'm pretty close to the example in the book, but it needs a little refinement.

Strobist Info:

Background and base is Translum at a sweeping angle.

Godox AD-360 1/2.7 power in an Apollo Softbox overhead and behind the glass to light background.

Gridded YN-560EXiii at full power at top of background to help with gradient (which was mostly lost in lightroom...)

Black cards left, right, and top to outline the glass.

Classic Old Hollywood Marylin Monroe ish pose

TWELVE/12... Get it? I said it was stupid...

Strobist info:

-Canon 430exii @ 1/3rd over 1/2 power through a small Lumiquest softbox and a sheet of translum

I pinched the idea of scrabble tiles from [https://www.flickr.com/photos/31843304@N02]. Thanks Andy.

COLOR-RADO from Haribo.

Never noticed the funny spelling before ... :-)

These german jelly fruits are quite photogenic, because they are translucent.

Strobist: One light source: sort of a large softbox*, in the background, one reflector** in the foreground.

White cards left, right, and above pieces.

Looking down on the glass gave the top rim some geometry besides being just a line - and I think it looks pretty cool. I have also probably beaten the dark field lighting into the ground...

Strobist Info:

YN560EXIII at full power through translum behind subject.

Black gobo creating black background and helping define rim light.

Light was restricted to about a 2" band around the background gobo to keep the lines on the glass small.

Some reflections were cleaned up in Photoshop.

If you wait long enough, the big drops eat the little ones. You can see some of the cannibalism in the center...

Strobist Into:

White plexiglass surface for gradient and shadows.

This came out awfully bright and the Shadows and Blacks sliders in Lightroom really separated the drops from the background in a way that the light could not.

Shot on translum With silver umbrella and backlight.

For things that don't move, you can use anything to light them. Normally, I'm using all manner of materials, tracing paper, or Savage Translum to create gradients on round objects like this. This one is lit by my Angle poise desk lamp, which is pointing at the wall to the left. The background is just my computer monitor. Set the white balance afterwards in Lightroom, and added some more black background left and right in Photoshop

Food photos for Viva -- btw a great restaurant in Aschaffenburg, worth trying: www.viva-ab.de/index2.html.

Setup used, cmp. setup shot and notes there. Summary:

Two speedlights, on in silver umbrella, one trough translum foil. Little mirrors for highlights.

The speedlights are triggered via Yongnuo 602 RF triggers.

I used a superzoom 18-270 in the tele range (therefore the ladder), but would go for a prime the next time, I guess.

Will it jump out at you if you wear 3D glasses :-) This is a combination of the Dark Field technique, changing light color, and doctoring a liquid to show the light hitting it.

Strobist Info:

I actually shot this Dark Field style and inverted the color curve and set it to grey-scale.

I am tired and horribly uninspired tonight... The alien albino chicken made another appearance because he was the first thing I saw as I went to grab the lights. I had to do a fair amount of color correction in Lightroom - I think there are additives in plastic that turn this little guy blue. I somewhere that plastic shower curtains have blue phosphorus in them to help them appear to be more white than they are - that may be this little guys problem.

I used an Alien Bees b1600 on camera left behind the subject. The light is diffused using Savage Heavy Weight Translum. The flash is at a high downward angle. Simple setup.

Scrim with an old Photogenic 1500R Strobe. Savage Translum provided the diffusion. The camera rested on a small block of metal on top of black duvateen cloth. Duvateen is a great negative fill.

A much darker shot of the original...

I really need a bigger room to do this stuff in. You can tell from the shadows that the softbox was way too close... And not large enough either.

Day 19 of an Unknown Number

"Translum"

Today's image features a recent purchase. In front of our subject hangs a roll of Translum. It is simply a piece of diffusion in the form of thin, frosted plastic. It can be used as diffusion, a backdrop, and for silhouettes. I decided to test out the silhouette option....wishing to hide the subject . There is a bare strobe behind our model, and he is almost pressed up against the plastic. The closer the subject is to the material, the sharper the image. This is a multiple exposure, and I turned my head both directions after taking one exposure while facing forward. I can envision a multitude of uses for the material, and have just begun to experiment. What about a large hairdo? What about for nudes? Who knows? Thanks for passing through!!
