This is by far the best of the three, but the blue in the background could have been a little stronger...

YN-560EXiii at 1/8 power with blue gel behind and right of subject through translum.
The translum was a single sheet and the two lights created a gradient from white to blue on the background.
Black cards left and right of subject for edge definition - were photoshopped out.
The two lights were seperated by a white card to help define the transition between white and blue.
It is really important to have the lock on on the sound trigger... The banging glass sets the flashes off several times - and with a 2 second exposure time you end up with a completely white image...
I had to go long exposure and use the MIOPS to set off the flashes. It turns out that the shutter lag on a 5DMII is really slow... Even with mirror lock-up on... Also, the MIOPS does not come with a compatible cable to set off an Einstein or Alien Bee. I had to set off a speedlight and set the other flashes to optical slave. If you are listening MIOPS guys - a cable that will trip Paul C Buff lights directly would be really cool :-)

This is my first attempt at water drops. I was trying to find a way to increase the surface tension of the water and came up short - any ideas would be appreciated.

Focus stack, made from 45 shots, shot not with a focus rail, but via focus variation.
>>> THE LIGHT
Bit hard to explain. Two Neewer LED Lamps, one from above, with a piece of translum foil wrapped around. The other shining as backlight, also through translum foil. The trick is, that in the translum foil of the upper one, there sit also two black cardboard pieces, forming a little adjustable soft slit of light ... See making-of shot in the comments.
>>> THE ROCKS
The wet rocks in the background come from another shot, but were shot under the same light. They were also shot as stack of sth like 12 images, and blurred later-on.
>>> THE DETAILS
I borrowed the rocks from a railway track nearby, dont tell the Bundesbahn! :-) And the clipping path of the watch for the little composite was done by www.clippingfactory.com

Testing the Elinchrom Quadra flash duration. Set up: Head B with orange gel behind subject, through double scrim (Savage translum). Head A directly above subject. Nikon SB900 CR at 1/128. Head B gets 1/3 of the power from the asymmetrical 400W/S pack. Head A gets the other 2/3. Pack was at full power (6.0) which results in the shortest flash duration for port B. Skyport on camera. Camera triggered with Triggertrap in audio-triggering mode on iPhone.

LIGHT
One Halogen lamp from the back, two LED lenser flashlights from left and right.
All lamps through translum foil.
TRICKS USED
I combined the cold LED and the hot Halogen light, to get a nice color contrast.
Two shots with different focus were used and stacked.
The knife is fixated on a little metal stand, I cloned that out later-on.
The drops are Glycerin.

Strobist: 3 lights. Elinchrom HD500 in a 36" strip box behind Translum, f/8, for the background gradient. Another HD500 on a snoot illuminating the martini glass, camera left and behind, f/11. Quadra "A" head on a 20º grid camera right, also at the martini glass and the olives, f/11. Triggered by Skyport.
This is a composite of 5 images although the lighting was consistent (the exception being a snooted HD500 on the bottle's label at the top).

This thing is huge… It bent the piece of glass it was sitting on and had to be supported underneath. But it is really fun to shoot with.

2 Einsteins at 1/8th power with 7” reflectors behind the subject through translum.
White reflectors left and right of the subject.
Black paper between the subject and translum for backround.
This is a composite of three images - one for each drop. All of them were lit exactly the same. iming on these things was a pain and the focus was worse. I guess that is why folks pay $400+ for water dropping rigs with timers, sensors and all that.
Strobist Info:
Einstein at 1/128th power through translum behind subject.
Despite the clean up between each shot, this was a lot of fun. I started with a wine glass, but I was having a hard time getting the sound trigger to work without having to actually break the glass. Maybe I will have to hit GoodWill for some cheap crystal to smash up :-)

Key and edge light from the right both more hard, Fresnel focused spot-lights.

I got the original idea from here. Instead of using a colored light source I used colored reflectors. A darker color would probably have been a good idea.

YN-560EXiii at 114 power through translum. Red reflectors left, right, and above the glass.
To get the red to reflect the reflectors needed to to be an inch away from the glass. They were removed in post...
So, this was my first time using an Einstein... I can't tell you how awesome it is that the back LCD tells you flash power in stops from full power and in total watt seconds, the color temperature, and t1 flash duration.

Product tabletop shoot
Just got few cheap studio strobes - Quantuum UP! 200 :)

Background - Colorama Colormatt, Coal - perfect for that type of shoots
Strobist:
- Softbox 60x90cm with strobe, on top (faces forward to not affect the background)
- Softbox 60x90cm with strobe on the right, obscured by small piece of black translucent material (to smoothen the light depth on the subject back)
- Strobe with a BD and grid in front, to fill the bowl of the subject (used in separate shoot, to not affect the background);
- YN560III with rogue grid as back lit;
- Savage trans-lum plastic foil on left side - global highlight.
Strobes and speedlite fired with YongNuo RF-603 transceivers and YN-560TX controller.
Food photos for Viva -- btw a great restaurant in Aschaffenburg, worth trying: www.viva-ab.de/index2.html.
Setup used, cmp. setup shot and notes there. Summary:
Two speedlights, on in silver umbrella, one trough translum foil. Little mirrors for highlights.
The speedlights are triggered via Yongnuo 602 RF triggers.
I used a superzoom 18-270 in the tele range (therefore the ladder), but would go for a prime the next time, I guess.
Finally, a night without a golf ball in front of the camera...
This is a composite of two images - one for the glass and one for the garnish. It is really hard to highlight the garnish without light bouncing all over the glass. I tried a snoot and a grid... Turns out it is easier to just take two shots and mask them together in photoshop...

Exact strobist infos: Yongnuo flash on lightstand shooting through translum foil -- this gives this softbox light, styrofoam board on the opposite side to lighten up the shadows. Took some processing in Photoshop to bring out more detail and to make the chocolate a bit warmer.
Thanks for making this Explore #469 ! :-)
Casual portrait of Rob using a double key, and large reflector for fill.
Key light is a 120 Octa, but with a gridded beauty dish boomed over the top of it to put more light on the face and top half of Rob. White Savage Translum panel on the right to fill in the shadows a bit.
Model: Rob Ancomy
Setup for the splash shots:
- A little fish tank in the middle (I got that cheap from Amazon)
- two flashes on the right and left side, shooting through paper pieces as diffusors
- two flashes placed in my bathtub shooting from underneath through the translum foil
- translum foil formed as some sort of transparent seamless background under the tank
Three flashes from Yongnuo, one Canon 430, all four RF triggered via Yongnuo RF triggers.
Camera on tripod with cable remote, adjustments cmp. EXIF.
Btw.: No light barrier involved, obviously this also works manually with some patience. :-)
Plasma Ball.
I lit the ball with one strip softbox angled into a 1.5x1m panel of heavyweight Translum on the right of the ball and behind it. There is no light source on the left - that edge you see on the left hand side is *inside* the ball.
The plasma is quite dim so at 1/30th and f/5.6 I needed Iso 4000 for these exposures. The softbox therefore had to be really really low in power too, and I ended up using an SB900 at 1/128th power - ie about 0.6 Watt-seconds. I couldn't trade in more exposure time to get that Iso down, as the plasma moves about and even at 1/30th it was getting a bit blurry.
