In just three weeks, an incredible transformation has occurred. The little baby that wasn’t expected to live gained a whooping 2 kilos (4 ½ pounds)! Now he smiles, coos, sits up, holds his own bottle, “jabbers,” (no more grunting), and although he still looks thin, especially compared to younger Teriku who, we think, is preparing to be a heavyweight contender, the haunting sunken eyes now sparkle with happiness and curiosity, and the feeble cry has turned into an occasional thunderous announcement that it’s time to eat!
Tomorrow Bekele will return to the clinic in Langano where he will continue the recovery and catch-up process until he is able to go “home” to live with the uncle, sister and brother.
Just a quick update on Teriku who has now been with us six months: Three weeks ago we met with Teriku’s family. Expecting to see the grandmother who had previously said she was willing to be Teriku’s caregiver when he became well, we were surprised to meet instead his father and grandfather. At first they didn’t believe it was Teriku. How could he have become so “gobez” - Amharic for strong and healthy? The young, nineteen-year-old father didn’t exactly know what to do with Teriku when I placed him in his arms but seemed happy to see him, while the grandfather, who told us that they had not expected Teriku to survive, was especially happy and posed proudly for photos. A sadness came over them, however, when we asked what their plans were for Teriku. Stumbling through a conversation with a translator we soon discovered that they did not intend to take Teriku back. “We are not able to care for him. He has become so strong and healthy now; if he comes back he will become sick again. We cannot care for him.” As the conversation continued we discovered that the grandmother had not come because she had just delivered her eighth child. Furthermore it was likely that the village would like reject Teriku as he grew up because his unmarried parents were cousins. The intent of the father and grandfather was clear when I asked a final question, “So, how long do you want us to care for Teriku? Although I’m sure I saw a wishful sadness in the grandfather’s eyes the response was clear and firm, “permanently,” he said simply.
What is Teriku’s future? We don’t know. Probably he will live with us for a few years. Perhaps we will find an Ethiopian family for him to live with. For now, we are taking it a day at a time and looking to God for direction.
“When we quit thinking primarily about ourselves and our own self-preservation, we undergo a truly heroic transformation of consciousness.”
~ Joseph Campbell
This once clean hydraulic pump is soiled with years of dirt and the remnants of animals. This once unsightly caterpillar has become a butterfly. A butterfly that, with its wings closed, displays dark brown colors that match this old rotted pump. But with its wings spread, this butterfly brightens a dull scene.

This community has been radically changed by the presence of the Gospel.
See how a Jesus Well has been a key part of bringing that transformation.
